New World of Warcraft Diorama in the Works?

0 Posted 25th Dec 2009 06:05 AM by Medievaldragon

Sideshow Collectibles produced a limited edition of Tychus Findlay on 2007 when Blizzard announced Starcraft II was in development, and a Blood Elf Rogue vs Draenei Paladin diorama for the debut of the Burning Crusade expansion on 2008. It looks like Sideshow Collectibles might be ready to announce a new World of Warcraft diorama on 2010, based either on Wrath of the Lich King or Cataclysm. It was not specified what it would be about, but as you may read below, they have plain confirmed a new Warcraft diorama is underway.

Considering past experience, Sideshow has announced a diorama based on a Blizzard franchise either when Blizzard announces a new game or at Blizzcon. Could there be a new Blizzcon on 2010? Twitch. Twitch.

What theme would you pre-order?

Will you make more pieces from Starcraft? My Tychus Findlay is starting to get lonely.

Sideshow Collectibles: Yes, we continue to look at Blizzard titles for product opportunities. At the moment, we’re more likely to attack Warcraft than Starcraft, but who knows what may come in the future. Did you have any specific ideas in mind?

Which WoW diorama would you pre-order?

There's no doubt about it, WoW has been extremely popular and influential in the world of gaming and GameZone appear to agree. The site is running their top 25 games of the decade and WoW naturally made the listing but not their very top spot as some might have expected. WoW made it to number 3 and their top game has not yet been revealed. Check out their list here.

World of Warcraft The Magazine # 1 Preview

0 Posted 25th Dec 2009 12:40 AM by Medievaldragon

Future US, Inc. has released a nice preview inside of the World of Warcraft Magazine. This product was announced at Blizzcon 2009, and won't be available at newsstands, but through online subscription.

The index reveals this number one issue has over 144 pages, of which at least 40 pages are available on the free preview. This issue contains a interview with Blizzard president Mike Morhaime and J. Allen Brack, and what at some point was meant to be a spoiler of the Halls of Reflections dungeon. If you haven't played Warcraft III and its expansion, you can read a condensed summary of Lady Sylvanas's story before and after the Death Knight Arthas razed his way through Quel'Thalas toward the Sunwell, her transformation into an undead banshee and her escape from Arthas' control until she rallied some of the undead under the name of The Forsaken as their Banshee Queen.

Have you been among the fans waiting for this World of Warcraft Magazine to be released? Then taking a look through the preview and the index page will give you an idea of what to expect. There are articles for PvP, Healers, Tanks, and DPS players; Pet Collectors, addons, the usefulness of Authenticators to protect guild banks, and a glimpse into the Cataclysm expansion.

Patch 3.3 Introduced Pre-Cataclysm Tremors?

7 Posted 24th Dec 2009 03:20 PM by Medievaldragon

Since patch 3.3: Fall of the Lich King was released, a few fans are reporting to have noticed sudden earthquakes outdoors and even within dungeons. This is a sign and a beginning of what will be the world event pre-Cataclysm, where Deathwing will emerge from Deephome causing a devastating earthquake that will shake the foundations of Azeroth.

As nigh everyone knows, Deathwing was formerly the dragon aspect of earth who became corrupted with the whispers of the Old gods over ten thousand years ago. Under the influence of the Old gods, he created the demon soul -- a golden disc made of Deathwing's blood -- forged by his goblin slaves. Deathwing tricked the other Dragon Aspects and their dragonflights to infuse the demon soul with part of their powers to use the artifact as a weapon to defend Azeroth against the Burning Legion's invasion. This story may be found in Warcraft: War of the Ancients Archive by Richard A. Knaak.

The story was a sequel to Warcraft: Day of the Dragon (2001) by the same author, where Deathwing manipulated indirectly the orcish dragonmaw clan into finding the demon soul to enslave the red dragonflight during the second war. Deathwing's is a long storyline of a dread enemy that has had many ramifications throughout the story of Azeroth. He was even a boss encounter in the RTS game -- Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal.

You can read more of Deathwing in the recent World of Warcraft: Beyond the Dark Portal co-written by Christie Golden and Aaron Rosenberg. And finally, after twenty years of absence hidden in the depths of Azeroth, Deathwing once more appeared in World of Warcraft: Night of the Dragon (2008) in the depths of Grim Batol, where he gathered Lady Sinestra's egg cache for the creation of the Twilight dragonflight.

The next expansion, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, will unearth one of the most dangerous beings in Azeroth and the whole world will feel the effects of Deathwing's arrival upon Azeroth, heralded by tremors and earthquakes that will change the land of Azeroth as shown at Blizzcon 2009. The Barrens will be split in half by a trench of lava. The land will be afire in places, or covered by lava all around Azeroth. The good thing about this remodeling of Azeroth's landscape is that it serves as an excuse to introduce Flying Mounts on Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms.

Recently, a forum community manager confirmed that a world event will happen in the game, pretty much like the popular Zombie invasion that heralded the launch of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Therefore, these small tremors in patch 3.3 are signs that it has begun. Could beta be as close as Summer 2010? It will certainly be very welcomed.

These in-game tremors seem to be random, and might happen anywhere. Some people has reported feeling the earthquake in Orgrimmar, the Barrens, Sunken Temple, Azure dragonshrine in Dragonblight, and other places. Thus, it's pretty much random and may happen anywhere in the game.

Have you experienced these tremors? Have you caught it on video? Let us know.

World of Warcraft Headset Among 2009 Vaporware

2 Posted 24th Dec 2009 02:57 AM by Medievaldragon

Big Download added the World of Warcraft headset by Creative Labs among their 2009 Vaporware list. This product was unveiled and shown at Blizzcon this past August, as announced at the following press release. If you visit the Creative Website, and search the keyword: Warcraft, any trace of this product is nowhere to be found.

11. World of Warcraft headset

If you can get even a fraction of the millions of people who play World of Warcraft to buy your product you will have a success. Creative Labs likely thought that was the case when it announced plans to release a World of Warcraft-branded PC headset at BlizzCon last August.

However, it looks like Horde and Alliance members who wanted to get the headset before Christmas are going to be out of luck. Despite a promised release before the end of the year, Creative Labs has yet to even accept pre-orders for the headset, let alone selling the device.

Cataclysm PvP Shrouded in Mystery

2 Posted 20th Dec 2009 03:24 PM by Medievaldragon

Ghostcrawler was very chatty recently on the PvP forums, leaving more questions than answers on his wake. We do know many character stats such as strength, agility, and spell power will be changed drastically. We know stamina will be higher than anything we have seen in WoW. However, what changes will PvP have? How will the balance equation get turn around by the horns to make matters better than in Wrath of the Lich King?

Blizzard Quote:
What kind of balance are the devs going for, if the current policy maintains keeping class synergy important. In my opinion this reads as some classes by design just wont work together, and some classes by design simply will.

I know its easy to open a can of worms for trolls to chew on by going in to any specifics, but if u can please share some insight on the goals devs have when looking into balancing arena.

Ghostcrawler: We think one of the problems is that we've spent too much effort balancing around specific specs instead of teams. But it's actually the comp that is super important. In the past we've given a spec with presumably low survivability more survivability or a class with marginal CC better CC. Increasingly though, we think that's a shotgun approach. What we are doing now is looking in terms of a, typically 3-player, team. What does a Balance druid bring to the table? Why would you want a warlock instead of a Frost mage? Those types of questions. We want to make sure there is at least one viable comp for each spec and then we can adjust those specs by answering the question: Okay, why is A being brought more than B?

The flip side of that is why you'd want to be spec A of your class when spec B is more attractive to the other players. Whenver you buff A, you risk B falling off though.

Too often the forum discussions (and not just our forums) rally around very specific questions, such as: how do I beat this guy? Or, why do I get blown up so fast? Those can be useful at identifying weaknesses, but ultimately it's the synergy with the other players on the team that is more important. (I'm only talking about Arenas here. Coordination in BGs is still important. It's just very different.)

P.S. Too often the forum discussions also focus too much on what the best players are capable of doing. Many players would get more information by looking at what the average Arena players are doing. The best players are where they are because they just really know what they're doing. PvP balance for them is going to be different than it is for the average player. (Not more or less important. Just different.)

And what about those of us who just want to play with our friends regardless of what class they are? So much for bring the player not the class. I guess I should kick out my real-life DK friend and recruit some MS warrior I never heard of.

Ghostcrawler: "Bring the player" refers to the way we shared more buffs and debuffs for PvE purposes so that building a raid isn't so restricted.

I'm not sure there's ever going to be a way you can just grab random people and expect to accomplish much in a competitive Arena. Part of our focus on BGs in Cataclysm is to let players PvP without having to worry so much about their comp. We're not necessarily trying to encourage any player with interest to step into Arenas in the same way we are with raiding in LK.

One of the main issues I have with the "Balancing the Team Comp" rather than the class is the eventual migration towards a "perfect comp", which will force Arena down both a incredibly boring and static road once players figure out what the optimal comp is. In short, if people find out that RMP is the best team to go with you will see all the top teams being RMP and the rest just struggling to get by.

Ghostcrawler: I don't think that has to be eventual outcome. For example, a counter comp that beat the first comp might keep the first comp's numbers under control.

I think RMP is probably too dominant, but I don't think that means there will always be a single "the best" team.

May I ask why, especially if PvP gear rewards as so tightly tied into arenas?

Ghostcrawler: A better way to pose that question is to ask why offer the best rewards only for Arena? The answer is that we are changing the way we do that for Cataclysm and allow players to earn the same epic PvP gear for rated BGs. This does not mean you can grind your way through BGs. You'll have to win. It should feel roughly equivalent to those guilds capable of beating the most difficult encounters getting the best PvE gear.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from your new directions in pvp balance, it seems like we're all going to end up pigeon holed into a handful of comps where you design us into (see RMP) and not be able to play competitively otherwise.

Ghostcrawler: I would argue that's where we are today. To improve that, I think we need to look at what is keeping other comps from being competitive and not just buff individual talents to affect individual survival or burst damage for example.

So hunters, warriors and rogues are guaranteed to be on 33% of arena teams, each healing spec (minus holy cuz priests have disc) is guaranteed at least 25% of all teams, and everyone else is SOL.

Ghostcrawler: You are saying here "So, you're not going to change a thing," when the whole point of the thread is talking in general about what we want to change. Specifics will have to wait until closer to beta.

Blizzard Definitely Plans to Work on a Console Game

2 Posted 19th Dec 2009 06:16 PM by Medievaldragon

The whole internet is ablaze with passionate enthusiasm after J. Allen Brack told Gamasutra there's definitely a console game within Blizzard's hands at some point, however it depends on what game makes the most sense to develop for the console -- excluding RTS games or multiple-button UI games such as World of Warcraft. Will it be Starcraft: Ghost resurrection or something based on the three main franchises or something entirely new?

Blizzard Quote:
"Think about StarCraft II," says Brack. "Some real-time strategy games have tried to happen on the console. Some of those have been successful, but overall, our experience is that it's going to be a better game on the PC, ergo it's developed on the PC."

Same with WoW, Brack adds, a game developed for the PC and with a PC-centric control scheme. "But we're a company of gamers," he says. "I have two consoles at home. Sam has consoles. We're a culture of gamers. We will definitely work on a console game at some point. I have no doubt about that. It's just [a matter of] what game. What makes the most sense?"

Each actor speaks a little about the person they play, what motivates them, and what it's like to put a voice to an animated character. The video gives a nice insight into Guild Wars 2 and the background of the characters."

DC Comics announces World of Warcraft Comic Book Format Change

0 Posted 17th Dec 2009 03:04 PM by Medievaldragon

As reported a few weeks ago, after World of Warcraft Special # 1 (Dec 9, 2009) DC comics and Wildstorm were launching a new spin off title, World of Warcraft: Horde # 1 and World of Warcraft: Alliance # 26. The issue # 25 even had advertisement announcing this. However, things have changed drastically overnight. Fans had noticed about two weeks ago that both titles had been removed from DC Comics's January Solicitations and now we partially know why. Don't expect them at all on January.

DC Comics has sent us heads up to read the following IGN article, which states a radical change in the format of the World of Warcraft and Starcraft comic books. The ongoing monthly series has been cancelled, and the company will develop them as graphic novels.

December 16, 2009 - Blizzard's fantasy and futuristic universes are about to get shaken up, courtesy of a comic book revamp by DC's Wildstorm Comics. Today the publisher announced it intends to refocus its efforts on a series of original graphic novels, cancelling its current ongoing series endeavors for both franchises.

"While WildStorm and Blizzard loved the stories being told in the regular monthly comic-book series, we decided that the graphic novel would be a more suitable medium for the tales we wanted to tell next," said Hank Kanalz, VP & General Manager of Wildstorm. "The larger format will give our artists and storytellers more room to explore Blizzard's rich, varied worlds and flesh out the characters that inhabit these places."

Medievaldragon's View

I have been an x-men fan for decades, and while I no longer collect them, I get my daily fix by reading previews, interviews and articles at Newsarama. Thus, I can bring another angle to this surprising announcement concerning the WoW and Starcraft comic books going the Graphic Novel route.

Yes, now we won't have our ongoing monthly fix, but it means the graphic novel format will offer more freedom to writers to tell big stories, rather than small stories that tie-in through cliffhangers at the end of each issue-number. DC comics already sells World of Warcraft Hardcovers reprinting the monthly issues -- so there's not much of a difference between that and a Graphic Novel. Except, the artists change from issue to issue, and maybe we can have the same artist and writer throughout the whole graphic novel. You can see dozens of graphic novels currently developed by DC Comics ranging Wildcats, Astro City, The Authority, Danger Girl, Gen13, Stormwatch, World of Warcraft and many others. There was already a World of Warcraft Graphic Novel titled World of Warcraft: Ashbringer.

On another note, I have already heard feedback on forums that this format change was announced because the WoW and Starcraft comic book were not selling well. I think it's a right to assume and speculate when there is no other immediate explanation, but this assumption might be wrong.

A few months ago, DC Comics surprised everyone in the industry announcing it would be known as DC Entertainment. A change like that usually means restructuring isn't far behind. Back on September 9, 2009, Paul Levitz announced he would step down as President and Publisher of DC Comics to serve as the Contributing Editor and Overall Consultant for the newly-formed DC Entertainment. Warner Bros acquired DC Comics back on 2007. Now Warner Bros and Time Warner are restructuring DC Entertainment to integrate the intellectual properties, heroes and stories more efficiently with what Warner Bros/Time Warner can offer in the TV and Hollywood field. Let's not forget Legendary Pictures is co-producing and co-financing the Warcraft Film with Warner Bros.

You can read Paul Levitz's announcement here. (circa September 9, 2009)

WoW 5th Anniversary: Samwise Didier Interview

0 Posted 17th Dec 2009 02:01 PM by Medievaldragon

Blizzard updated their Warcraft Twitter to announce the 5th WoW anniversary celebration continues with the newest addition to the 5th Anniversary page ... the interview with the real-life-deal familiar-size Pandaren - Samwise Didier. Read the full interview.

Blizzard Quote:
Most recently, the Exclusive Pandaren Brewmaster figure hit the Blizzard Online Store. Since it was something you were heavily involved in helping to create, can you tell us about the process and why this one is so special?

Samwise: The development was pretty painless, at least on my end. A pencil drawing for the front, side, and back of Chen as well as details for his gear, and that was about all. The face needed a few more iterations to it to help out the sculptor and that was really it.

The sculpting of Chen is special to me as the Pandaren was originally just created for my family and friends. It was done just for fun, as a joke. To have this personal piece of art become a page or two in the massive volumes of Blizzard Entertainment lore is an honor. And to have it embraced by so much of our community is a really great feeling. Some still think of the Pandaren as the Aprils Fools gag, while others think they should be the next race for World of Warcraft (Horde, naturally smile).

But whatever your views, just remember this... if my brother was a better speaker then the pandaren race might never have been born. Cheers to you brother!

Hotfix: Deathbringer Saurfang Is Meaner than Before, Fool

0 Posted 16th Dec 2009 11:41 PM by Medievaldragon

The Deathbringer Saurfang encounter has been modified in a way that might be controversial to some guilds. If you thought it was hard as heck, think twice. It's harder now. This will force guilds to change their strategy. The tooltip won't reflect this change, so alert your guild leader and raid of this new change and keep it in mind with whatever strategy you were using until this point to compensate.

Let's take a look at the tooltip:

Rune of Blood: Saurfang's melee attacks leech health from the target. Saurfang is healed for 5 times the amount leeched. (Update: Now it is 10 times)

Leeches 5950 to 8050 health from an enemy target and heals Saurfang for 5 times that amount. (Update: Now it's 10 times)

Blizzard Quote:
Daelo: Deathbringer Saurfang's Rune of Blood has been modified to heal 10 times the amount of damage dealt instead of 5 times the damage. This will make the encounter more difficult if you try to tank Saurfang with just one character. The tooltip does not reflect this change, but it will in a future patch.

Gamasutra: Facebook vs World of Warcraft

0 Posted 16th Dec 2009 10:06 PM by Medievaldragon

Gamasutra posted a three-pages article comparing Facebook vs World of Warcraft in several design levels such as the interface, networking/community feedback, and integration of both medias.

In World of Warcraft, user interface is multi-layered, framing the game world with iconic buttons, a running log of events, and a record of social exchange. Facebook's pages are drawn in clean columns with actionable buttons and links standing out in sharp blue against the soft white background.

In both, mouse navigation fine-tunes your orientation in the world while keystrokes are used for personal interaction and expression. WoW presents its visual interface as the frame of the entire game world. In Facebook, each new bit of information has a smaller set of interface options that are consistent from profile to profile and status update to status update.

"The primary guideline for anything that we add to Facebook is to help our users connect and share with each other," said Gareth Davis, Platform Manager and Games Lead at Facebook. "That's the lens through which we evaluate every single thing that we add to the site. Does it help people connect and does it facilitate sharing?"

Sharing and connecting is crucial to WoW, but it happens in the context of roleplay and fantasy projection. Those elements, the quest design, the story that connects them, and the art style through which players can bring their fantasy to life are elements of art and authorship.

Patch 3.3.0a: Warrior Sweep Strikes and Bladestorm Changes Looming

0 Posted 16th Dec 2009 08:59 PM by Medievaldragon

A player brought up the problem that represents a peculiar bug that is abused in PvP: Battleground and Arenas -- when a Warrior executes Sweeping Strike and Bladestorm next. The player described this combo as a Warrior's "I-WIN-BUTTON". Let's check out the tooltip of each ability:

Sweeping Strikes: Requires Battle Stance, Berserker Stance. Your next 5 melee attacks strike an additional nearby opponent. 30 Rage. Instant. 30 sec cooldown.

Bladestorm: Requires Melee Weapon. Instantly Whirlwind up to 4 nearby targets and for the next 6 sec you will perform a whirlwind attack every 1 sec. While under the effects of Bladestorm, you can move but cannot perform any other abilities but you do not feel pity or remorse or fear and you cannot be stopped unless killed. 25 Rage. Instant. 1.5 min cooldown

In addition to what you just read about each ability, the glyphs offer some slight changes to both abilities:

Glyph of Sweeping Strikes: Reduces the rage cost of your Sweeping Strikes ability by 100%.

Glyph of Bladestorm: Reduces the cooldown on Bladestorm by 15 sec

Have you been victim or witnessed what happens when a Warrior effectively uses this combo? Have you lost an Arena due to this? Let us know your feedback.

Blizzard Quote:
Eruza: Anyone who has seen a Warrior Sweeping Strike Bladestorm 2 targets knows the damage is insane. And there's no excuse around it anymore, it's become to easy of an iwin button. Warriors may cry foul, claiming that your team should be spread out to avoid Bladestorm or you're just bad, but esp with melee and Warrior mobility, people will almost always be together at some point in every arena match.

This is very pronounced with Death Grip, forcing 2 players into BS for max damage makes getting a kill far too easy. The latest pet avoidance change makes this problem much bigger. Pet's can be taunted, and taunting a pet to you to guarantee full Sweeping Strikes Bladestorm damage on your target should not be allowed to happen.

Ghostcrawler: We're trying to fix the interaction between Sweeping Strikes and Bladestorm. The purpose of Sweeping Strikes is to let your attacks hit more targets, not hit the targets you are already hitting harder.

Bladestorm should not be able to use Sweeping Strikes to transfer all that damage to a single target. As I said above, the purpose of Sweeping Strikes is to hit *additional* targets not just cause more damage to existing targets. I believe Whirlwind works with Sweeping Strikes correctly, so we'd like to get Bladestorm to work the same way.

This change will then let us see if any of the concern about Bladestorm in PvP is founded or if it's not an issue without Sweeping Strikes inflating the damage.

We don't think this will be a real nerf to PvE Arms warriors, but if it chills out their AE damage in those very specific situations where there are several closely grouped adds and Arms damage skyrockets, then I agree that's a good thing.

Aion Review: Levels 20-30

0 Posted 16th Dec 2009 05:03 PM by Maticus

I know a number of WoW players were interested when Aion was announced, and many of us have tried it, judging by Aion's in-game chat. A couple of months ago, I tried out the first 20 levels and was mightily impressed. But how does the game do after the beginner zones are behind us and the novelty wears off?

Drop in on my second review, which covers levels 20 to 30, over on IncGamers.

Unfamiliar with the game? Here's NCsoft's brief run-down:

  • A massively multiplayer online game featuring antagonistic relationships between angels, demons and a server-controlled NPC faction, The Dragons.
  • The most amazingly beautiful and detailed MMORPG ever, that brings the realities of what you can imagine to life.
  • The CrytecTM game engine is used to create unprecedented freedom of 3D movement for your character in the game world - climb sheer cliffs and fly through moving clouds.

IncGamers’ Headset Review - The Iron Lady

0 Posted 16th Dec 2009 03:49 PM by Maticus

Steelseries, the company behind the WoW Gaming Mouse, sent me one of the Iron Lady headsets, designed especially for gamer chicks (or gamer guys that like pink...). Check out our review over on IncGamers.

A snippet, if you will:

"The cup design of the ear pieces is extremely comfortable. As someone who wears glasses while gaming, I find that after wearing a headset for a while, the arms of my specs start digging into the sides of my head. This means I can't usually wear a headset for more than a couple of hours straight without experiencing some sort of discomfort, occasionally acute pain. This annoyance is joyously a thing of the past with the Siberia set. I have worn it for my entire working day on several occasions without any irritation whatsoever."
