World of Warcraft: Stormrage eAudio Book excerpt available

0 Posted 9th Mar 2010 11:09 PM by Medievaldragon

We have been alerted an eAudio Book excerpt of World of Warcraft: Stormrage by Richard A. Knaak is now available at the Simon & Schuster, Inc. / Pocket Books website. You can listen to Richard Ferrone read a few pages in this excerpt. This audio sample is approximately 5 minutes in length.

You may find the audio controller below the book description.

When the world of Azeroth was young, the god-like titans brought order to it by reshaping its lands and seas. Throughout their great work, they followed a magnificent design for what they envisioned Azeroth would become. Although the titans departed Azeroth long ago, that design endures to this day. It is known as the Emerald Dream, a lush and savagely primal version of the ... WORLD OF WARCRAFT.

Many are the mysteries surrounding the Emerald Dream and its reclusive guardians, the green dragonflight. In times past, druids have entered the Dream to monitor the ebb and flow of life on Azeroth in their never-ending quest to maintain the delicate balance of nature.

However, not all dreams are pleasant ones. Recently the Emerald Nightmare, an area of corruption within the Emerald Dream, began growing in size, transforming the Dream into a realm of unimaginable horror. Green dragons have been unexpectedly caught up in the Nightmare, emerging from it with shattered minds and twisted bodies. Druids who have entered the darkening Dream lately have found it difficult -- sometimes even impossible -- to escape.

Nor are these the Nightmare's only victims: more and more people are being affected. Even Malfurion Stormrage, first and foremost of the druids on Azeroth, may have fallen victim to this growing threat. As uncontrollable nightmares spread across the world, a desperate quest begins to find and free the archdruid.

Soon nature's enemies will learn the true meaning of the name ... STORMRAGE.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Mastery System Preview

1 Posted 9th Mar 2010 02:27 PM by Medievaldragon

Blizzard has provided a slight preview of what to expect from the Mastery System in the upcoming World of Warcraft: Cataclysm expansion. In this preview, Blizzard offers brief details for the Priest and Death Knight classes Mastery changes as a sneak peek for what other classes will get. Ghostcrawler said there's an upcoming Cataclysm preview coming. Hopefully that means close beta is nigh.

Speculating a bit, if the closed beta lasted six months, and the release date was November, beta should start around anywhere near May 2010. With Blizzard, however, it's hard to predict things.

Blizzard Quote:
Last week, we gave you an early look at the changes we’re making to the stat system in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, and explained how these changes will ultimately provide players with more interesting gear choices and make stats easier to understand. Today we’d like to go into more detail about a brand-new feature that’s an integral part of this overhaul: the Mastery system, a set of new game mechanics designed to allow players to become better at what makes their chosen talent tree cool or unique. With this system, we want to accomplish three things: give players more freedom in how they allocate talent points, simplify some of the “kitchen sinky” talents that try to do too much at once, and add a new stat to high-level gear that makes you better at your chosen role.

Here’s how the system works: As you spend points in a given talent tree, you’ll receive three different passive bonuses specific to that tree. The first bonus will increase your damage, healing, or survivability, depending on the intended role of the tree. The second bonus will be related to a stat commonly found on gear desirable to you, such as Haste or Crit. The third bonus will be the most interesting, as it will provide an effect completely unique to that tree -- meaning there will be 30 different bonuses of this nature in the game. This third bonus is the one that will benefit from the Mastery rating found on high-level (level 80 to 85) gear.

One of our primary goals with Mastery is to give players more flexibility to choose fun or utility-oriented talents rather than make them feel obligated to pick up “mandatory” but uninteresting talents, such as passive damage or healing. (For examples of the kinds of powerful but boring talents we’re talking about, take a look at the talent tier just above the 51-point talent in many of the existing trees.) In a sense, Mastery makes it so every talent in (just for example) a rogue tree essentially has an invisible additional bullet point that says “…and increases your damage by X%.” This way, if you choose a talent like Elusiveness (which reduces your chance to be detected while stealthed) or Fleet Footed (which affects movement), you won’t feel like you’re giving up damage in exchange for utility.

There will still be talents that boost damage, of course, but those talents will also affect the way you play. For example, you can still expect to see talents like Improved Frostbolt, which reduces the cast time of the Frostbolt spell; it increases DPS, but it also affects the mage’s rotation. Piercing Ice, however, is just “6% more damage” and is the kind of talent we’re trying to eliminate by implementing the Mastery system.

As we get closer to Cataclysm’s release, we’ll go into more detail about the changes coming for each class, including individual talent-tree adjustments and how Mastery will affect them. In the meantime, here are a few examples to demonstrate the three kinds of passive bonuses we described above. Please keep in mind that we're still working on this system, and the handful of examples we're providing here are, of course, subject to change.

Holy Priest

For each talent point spent in the Holy tree, the priest also gets:

  • Healing – Improves your healing by X%.

  • Meditation – Improves your mana regeneration from Spirit in combat. This would likely replace the existing Meditation talent from the Discipline tree, which many Holy priests consider to be a “must-have.” Regeneration will also probably be determined by whether you are in or out of combat, and not the “five-second rule.

  • Radiance – Adds a heal-over-time effect to direct heals, such as Flash Heal. Mastery on gear would boost this bonus, and no other talent tree would grant it.

Discipline Priest

For each talent point spent in the Discipline tree, the priest also gets:

  • Healing – Improves your healing by X%.

  • Meditation – Improves your mana regeneration from Spirit in combat. This would likely replace the existing Meditation talent.

  • Absorption – Improves the amount of damage absorbed by spells such as Power Word: Shield and Divine Aegis. Mastery on gear would boost this bonus, and no other talent tree would grant it.

Frost Death Knight

For each talent point spent in the Frost tree, the death knight also gets:

  • Damage – Improves your melee and spell damage by X%.

  • Haste – Improves your melee Haste by Y%. This might allow us to remove some of the Haste in the Icy Talons line of talents.

  • Runic Power – Improves the rate of runic power generated by abilities. While all death knights want runic power, Frost death knights would generally have more runic power than Blood or Unholy death knights (who would receive a different benefit from their respective trees). An Unholy death knight who sub-specs into Frost would still be able to benefit from this bonus, though because they’re investing fewer talent points, they’d benefit to a smaller degree. Mastery on gear would boost this bonus, and no other talent tree would grant it.

A couple other things to note: Currently, we’re not planning to retrofit the Mastery stat onto current level-80 gear when we roll out the stat-system changes prior to Cataclysm’s release. However, Mastery will begin appearing on select quest and dungeon items. You will also gain a small amount of Mastery by wearing gear of your intended armor type (such as plate for paladins). For players with dual specs, when you change between your two chosen specs, the Mastery bonuses and the benefit you receive from the Mastery stat on gear will adjust automatically based on your new spec.

We’ll have more details to share about these and other changes we’re making in Cataclysm in the future, and we’ll do our best to answer your questions about the Mastery system here on the forums. For information on many of the stat changes being made in Cataclysm, please check out our earlier update at.

NetEase hasn’t submitted Wrath of the Lich King to the GAPP

0 Posted 9th Mar 2010 02:13 PM by Medievaldragon

The GAPP approved operation of the Burning Crusade back in February 2010, and NetEase was confident to submit the Wrath of the LIch King expansion as soon as possible. According to the JLM Pacific Epoch, the GAPP responded to the press that NetEase has not yet submitted an application to get Wrath of the Lich King expansion approvals to operate in China.

Arguably, the Wrath of the Lich King might need much more editing than the Burning Crusade with all the Undead content, bones and other things which might violate the GAPP codes.

WoW Patch 3.3.2 Hotfixes - March 4, 2010

0 Posted 5th Mar 2010 03:43 AM by Medievaldragon

Bornakk posted the recent bug fixes applied to the game. Keep in mind that some of these changes may not be active until after the realm has been restarted. Raid groups should feel more comfortable now against Lord Marrowar who will wait a short amount of time before engaging a target right after bone storm. This will give the tanks without the charge or death grip ability to reach him in time before he hits a random player.

There are many other Icecrown Citadel changes for 10 and 25-player heroic encounters which might help your raiding.

Blizzard Quote:
  • In the Lord Marrowgar encounters, the boss will no longer reset threat after a bone storm and will now wait a small amount of time before attacking at the end of a bone storm.
  • In the Deathbringer Saurfang encounters, the boss is now less likely to cast Blood Nova on targets affected by Mark of the Fallen Champion.
  • In both normal and heroic versions of the 10 player Rotface encounter, the mutated infection ability will not be cast as quickly while the fight progresses.
  • In the 10- and 25-player heroic Festergut encounters, the malleable goo ability should no longer target pets.
  • In the Valithria Dreamwalker encounters, the duration of Emerald Vigor and Twisted Nightmares were slightly increased.
  • In the Sindragosa encounters, the duration of the instability debuff was slightly reduced.

NVIDIA 196.75 drivers + WoW = Graphic Card R.I.P.

0 Posted 4th Mar 2010 08:29 PM by Medievaldragon

Update - 11:00pm EST: I reached NVIDIA's PR for an official statement and they replied within the hour. Read their response and feedback from many gamers here.

Original post - 5:20pm EST: I want to warn all of our visitors who are participating in the StarCraft II Beta and play World of WarCraft to refrain from installing the latest NVIDIA WHQL 196.75 WHQL-certified drivers. As reported in our StarCraft: IncGamers fansite, This issue also affects World of WarCraft players according to a Blizzard Tech Support repreentative. If you already installed it, uninstall it and downgrade to the previous version. Yeah, it's that serious. Many players are reporting their PCs or graphic card have died. It also affects all Blizzard games, so heed the call and safe your hardware's life.

According to Blizzard's Tech Support the latest NVIDIA drivers are causing fan control to not work correctly and causes massive overheat. StarCraft II Beta might kill your PC or card literally. A fix is already in the works. Stay tuned for further updates.

Blizzard Quote:
We're getting reports where users are getting intermittent low FPS after installing these drivers. It seems that it is related to the fan control included in these drivers not working correctly and is causing the video card to overheat on 3D applications. This will affect Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft and StarCraft 2 Beta. Please uninstall the drivers and revert back to the older ones.

Cataclysm: The New Blasted Lands

3 Posted 3rd Mar 2010 11:30 AM by Medievaldragon

The World of WarCraft team recently revealed during the Twitter Dev Chat there are big plans for Blasted Lands in World of WarCraft: Cataclysm. There will be a big opening in the eastern mountains of Blasted Lands giving access to its border coastline with a new play area around the coastline, and who knows, maybe even an island like Hrothgar in northern Icecrown Glacier.

Some fans who never played a WarCraft game before WarCraft III might yell foul play with opening the mountains to have a sea access. In fact, it is the other way around. Blasted Lands was formerly known as Black Morass in WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness (1996,RTS game) and you can see that by going to Caverns of Time: Black Morass. That's where Medivh the Last Guardian opened the Dark Portal to allow Gul'dan's Horde to enter Azeroth.

If you haven't played WarCraft II, the in-game map for Black Morass was surrounded by lots of water. The image to the right is how the mini-map looked like. In the center of the round isle was the Dark Portal. It required the construction of transport boats and battleships to cross from one side to the other.

It was somewhat odd to find there was no bodies of water in Badlands and Blasted Lands when World of Warcraft launched in 2004, but that's how the developers designed it. Blasted Lands had the excuse that the demonic magics used by the warlocks setting camp around the Dark Portal and some of Draenor's itself drained the life out of the Black Morass, even the demons who reside in the Tainted Scar. The only body of water respected was that around Caer Darrow (Scholomance), except for two smaller islands missing in World of Warcraft where the Caer Darrow lake exists. (as shown to the left)

Blasted Lands will likely have new life if the Cataclysm caused the mountains to crack allowing water to run into the inner-land. We have not seen any concept art or previews of this place yet. There's a possibility this and other areas might get a new name, however. It won't make much sense to call it Blasted Lands anymore if nature has crawled back to this arid zone.

The developers mentioned in the Dev Chat there is going to be a big area in the Tainted Scar for the Worgen race. That's enigmatic in many ways. Why would the Worgen wish to be in a place formerly inhabited by demons, and why so close to the Dark Portal and Karazhan?

The Worgen found in Duskwood were pure breed summoned accidentally there by the Defias deserter nicknamed Jitters who found the Scythe of Elune within the Roland's Doom mine. While the Worgen race are cursed Gilnean humans. One thing does sound good with the revamping of the old world. The Scythe of Elune story arc might return in earnest. And where there is the Scythe of Elune and Worgen, the Dark Riders of Karazhan aren't too far.

Remember that crypt near Karazhan, Morgan's Plot? It was never opened to the players, but back in the day (before Blizzard fixed it) players could die by the gate, and resurrect inside the crypt. It was pretty big -- suggesting it might be a 5-players dungeon someday. I have gone a bit far from Blasted Lands here, but it's still good to mention the proximity of the Worgen area in the Tainted Scar with Karazhan. There's where the Dark Riders were reported to be residing, but the only Dark Rider we ever met in the Karazhan dungeon was Attumen the Huntsman. Could the other Dark Riders be hiding within Morgan's Plot?

Maybe. Maybe not. I would like to describe what's inside Morgan's Plot, but that would be breaking some rules as it is not an accessible place in the game. One thing to note about Morgan's Plot is that Aegwynn chose that place to be buried at -- as seen in the last issues of World of WarCraft comic book. She died in Ahn'Qiraj Temple, sacrifcing in order to save her grandson Med'an and all of Azeroth.

Will we fight a risen Aegwynn there if this dungeon ever opens? One can dream, right? I would like to see Aegwynn back. We never got to see her in the game. She only appeared in World of WarCraft: Cycle of Hatred by Keith R.A. DeCandido and joined Lady Jaina Proudmoore as a counselor, friend and mentor. Aegwynn appeared in World of WarCraft: Rise of the Lich King, by Christie Golden, still in Theramore, and in the Wildstorm Comics book. Seeing as she resurrected Medivh, before WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos, would be fitting if she's brought back by her son or grandson -- of course, after players dispense some beating to her sorrowing spirit within Morgan's Plot. Ya'know, like Thorim and the other Watchers who don't really die in Ulduar, and come to their senses and join us instead against Yogg-Saron.

Maybe after this Morgan's Plot encounter, we can permanently see her -- via phase technology -- back at Jaina's side in Theramore, unlocking a new NPC with a myriad of quests. Ok, that's a bit too much theorycraft.

Patch 3.3.2 Icecrown Citadel Raid Buffs Active

0 Posted 3rd Mar 2010 12:40 AM by Medievaldragon

Zarhym announces the Icecrown Citadel raid buff is now active. These are known as Strength of Wrynn (Alliance) or Hellscream's Warsong (Horde). The buff increases the total health of all players and your damage dealt, healing and health goes up a 5%.

The number of attempts on the final bosses of each wing and Arthas the Lich King on Heroic Difficulty has been increased to 35. You can deactivate the raid buff by speaking to your faction leader at Light's Hammer for those who wish to run the dungeon with more of a challenge in mind without the buff.

Crisp Thinking Releases MMO Tool, NetModerator

0 Posted 2nd Mar 2010 06:02 PM by Maticus

Crisp Thinking has released details of its latest software, NetModerator, which is designed to protect MMO gamers from annoying in-game activity such as gold selling and griefing.

The technology, based on software designed to protect children while online, is meant to shield players from antisocial behaviour, as well as cheating and undesirable activities such as spawn camping and kill-tagging.

“Gold farmers, cheaters and griefers are huge threats to the long-term success of any MMO. Yet, the industry has had to adopt a passive model -- waiting for players to report the problems after their experience has been ruined,” said Adam Hildreth, CEO of Crisp. “NetModerator for MMOs gives companies a weapon that lets them actively detect and deal with problems before most players even have a chance to notice.”

The software is currently rigged to work directly with many games from companies including Sony Online Entertainment, Nexon and Cartoon Network, but works with other online games. Fins out more at the official site.

First Blizzard Authenticator Hack Confirmed

0 Posted 2nd Mar 2010 02:35 PM by Maticus

Blizzard has confirmed that a work-around for hackers to gain access to games protected by its authenticator tool has been invented.

It's the first confirmed case of a compromised World of Warcraft account with an authenticator attached. The affected user alerted others to the issue on the official forums, then a Blizzard rep stepped in to confirm that the case was genuine. Other players then reported similar instances.

Blizzard poster Kropacius informed readers that the type of problem was a 'Man In The Middle' attack.

According to information from various affected users, the hacker gains access to a player's system through a keylogger, thought to be a file named emcor.dll, which can be found in /users/username/appdata/temp. Once infected, the PC will cause WoW to crash, prompting players to log back into the game. This is when the authenticator code is intercepted by the hacker, who sends on a different code to Blizzard's servers, preventing the legitimate user from gaining access to the game. In the mean time, the hacker does have access to the account, and can proceed to steal any gold and/or possessions from your characters.

The code on the authenticators changes every 30 seconds or so, so hackers only have access to the account until they log out. In the case of the user who reported the issue, they were blocked from attempting to access WoW for 15 minutes after inputting “incorrect” login details too many times. During that time, the keylogger was detected and removed. Nothing was changed in their account management, but when they gained access to WoW after the lock-out, several items were gone; the hacker had presumably been logged out when the owner logged back in.

Blizzard has always maintained that the authenticator was never a 100% fool-proof method of keeping game accounts safe, and should be treated as an additional layer of protection. This latest development further highlights the need to be aware of keyloggers, and to keep anti-virus software up to date. However, neither of these prevented the afore-mentioned user from falling foul of the scum of the internet.

Frozen Orbs in Patch 3.3.3

1 Posted 1st Mar 2010 07:45 PM by Medievaldragon

Blizzard reports how Frozen Orbs will be used as a currency for professions. Wryxian unofficially dubs it the Emblem of Crafting. Frozo the Renowned is available on the PTR servers and he will trade with you Frost Orbs for Eternals and Frost Lotus, as well as four Frost Orbs for a Runed Orb or Crusader Orb.

I don't know about you, but this mechanic is much better than farming and grinding all day long for Eternals, and encourages the use of the Random Dungeons LFG Tool daily to acquire the Frozen Orb reward from bosses.

Blizzard Quote:
In the upcoming patch 3.3.3, you will be able to use Frozen Orbs somewhat like a currency item for professions. Let's say Frozen Orb will soon become the fancy name for "Emblem of Crafting" wink

A helpful trader, Frozo the Renowned, has set up shop in Dalaran Magus Exchange and now offers you multiple items that you can buy using Frozen Orbs.

For most cases, this is a simple one for one trade. The following items can all be bought using only one Frozen Orb:
  • Eternal Air
  • Eternal Earth
  • Eternal Fire
  • Eternal Life
  • Eternal Shadow
  • Eternal Water
  • Frost Lotus
For the following items, Frozo will be wanting a little bit more from you than just one Frozen Orb:
  • Runed Orb - Requires 4 Frozen Orbs
  • Crusader Orb - Requires 6 Frozen Orbs
  • Pattern: Frosty Flying Carpet - Requires 6 Frozen Orbs, but also for the purchaser to be a Tailor.
So be sure to check Frozo the Renowned out if you're helping us test on the PTR, and if you're curious about the other things coming in 3.3.3, check out our PTR patch notes:

The Blizzard's freelancers-stalker, yours truly, strikes again. The non-profit Anime Convention held annually in St.George Utah, Anime Fannatiku, is having a pre-show Meet 'n Greet Social on Thursday night (March 4th) with the Guests of Honor, Patrick Seitz!

This is your chance to speak one-on-one with the Voice Actor who reprised Prince Arthas Menethil and to get an autograph and photos with him. Who is nerdy enough to do that anyway, right?

The Meet 'n Greet Social will take place at the Pizza Factory in St. George from 7:00pm - 9:000pm. Everyone who pre-registered to attend the Fannatiku Fest 2010 is invited to come because this social event also serves as an "Early Badge Pick-up" round. No need to stand in line on Friday morning!

Those who plan to attend The Pizza Factory must pay their own food which goes around $11.50 (includes tax, tip, all-you-can-eat pasta, and drinks). Since it's a public place, if you aren't going to the Anime Fannatiku, just go to the restaurant meeting.
