3rd Blizzard Title Confirmed

Posted 15th Jul 2007 01:08 AM by Rushster

We sort of knew this was the case, but in a Gamasutra news article, Blizzard’s Frank Pierce (vice president of product development) has confirmed that there is a third Blizzard development team who are working on a completely new game.

When pressed for details regarding the new project, Pearce was cagey. “Team 3 is working on something really awesome. I can’t give you any hints, but it’s totally awesome.”

We’re guessing Diablo III, which would make sense as Blizzard had already started the game development some time ago before Blizzard North was broken up. We know that development was scrapped following the departure of of the Diablo team from Blizzard to form Flagship Studios but we understand the Blizzard team started afresh. Will BlizzCon bring news of this new title? Here’s hoping! Thanks to nobbie for the news tip.

This is great news, but let’s hope it’s Diablo III indeed, otherwise I’ll be disappointed again. I knew they were working on it at some point, but I feared the work has stopped since a bunch of employees (including the mighty Bill Roper) left to found Flagship Studios. Don’t get me wrong, Hellgate London looks very promising, but Diablo and Diablo II are still my old time favorite games, and a third edition is something I definately want to see.

Let’s hope it’s any good, though, I don’t really know what to make of the game. Just because I don’t know how Diablo II can be topped, really… We’ll see!

That’s been known for a while now.  I posted a link 6 months or so ago to an article on the diabloii.net (the loaded inc diablo 2 website) forums where (I can’t remember EXACT details now) a guy from Blizzard said that they were working on 3 unannounced titles (this was right after TBC launched).  AKA: Next WoW expansion, Starcrat 2, and one more.

Everyone seemed to just ignore it then ...

I’ll look around for the article to see if I can find it again, but no promises.  Like I said, the article is from 6 months ago or so.

Found the article.  It’s on IGN though, so not sure that I can link it (it’s been a while since I’ve actually POSTED in these forums, so I’ve sorta forgotten the rules).

Anyway, the article is from an August 28, 2006 interview with Paul Sams (after TBC was announced):

“StarCraft is my absolutely favorite game of all time,” Sams told us. “As you probably already know, there is no doubt that we will continue the StarCraft and Diablo franchise, and trust me, I will be the happiest person in the world when we announce StarCraft 2.”
While Sams wasn’t ready to spill the beans just yet, he did say Blizzard “will have a major product announcement in 2007,” and that Blizzard was currently working on at least three other unannounced titles at the moment.

Anyway, if I am allowed to have this link in here, it’s:

Delete the link if it shouldn’t be there tongue laugh.

If it is Diablo III, I definitely expect that the BlizzCon beta key could be something of a choice, so fans of each of the three IPs could pick which game to beta (or possibly, they could beta test all 3!)—StarCraft II, the next WoW expansion, and Diablo III…
