51 Point Talents

Posted 5th Jan 2009 02:01 PM by Maticus

Most players at cap level go straight for a 51 point talent in their specs. It's usually a pretty useful spell that can be essential to a build, but it's not always the way to go. According to Blizzard, we should be able to spec truly hybrid by not choosing a 51 point talent, and perform just as well.

Have you ever found a successful build that didn't involve the end of tree talent?

Blizzard Quote: (Source)
That is not our design. If the 51-point talent defines the tree then you are closing the door on a hybrid spec of some kind ever being viable. The rest of a talent tree should not be filler to reach the 51 pointer. That is why we budget them exactly the same as the first tier talents. Now there are specs for which the 51 feels more mandatory and those for which it feels less mandatory. We’re okay with that too. Talent trees should be diverse and what works for one class might not work for another.

I don’t think I was clear enough: the PTR build does not reflect the new numbers for cat and scorpid. If I remember, I will post what those new numbers are since there seems to be a lot of concern about it (but I don't have them in front of me).

The problem is that when you start theorycrafting, the 51 point talent build is often better than any hybrid build.

most classes with multiple talent trees work with each other or do the same thing have a lot of hybrid builds.  Rogues, mages, warlocks, warriors and huntards are all no strangers to excellent hybrid builds.

eh, honestly the 51-pointers for my holy Priest (Guardian spirit?) and my enhancement shaman (the wolf thingies) rarely get used so there certainly isn’t ANY feeling that they were mandatory by any stretch. I think the only one that I use almost whenever it’s off CD (except for some tactical delaying from time to time) is Berserk on my druid.

I’m not saying that they aren’t useful or nice abilities—or even that I’m not messing up by not using them to their full extent (very very likely lol). I rarely click that 51-pt Talent when respec’ing, however, without seriously seriously questioning any other place to put that last point…

Peace.

RL-example

I’m torn between getting Starfall or Imp. Tranquility on my Boomkin/Resto hybrid.

Improved Tranquility with it’s 0 threat and reduced cooldown is very tasty, but if I end up only using it every 10 minutes and when I’m in no danger of pulling aggro Starfall would help out a LOT more. Especially in all-you-can-nuke trash pulls…

Meh I think most spec and work without a 51-point talent but I know with my holy pally Beacon of Light rarely gets used because I forgot I have it but it has saved my group in so many situation. The ability to heal a tank for example while healing myself is awesome in both PVE and in Arena. Would my build work without beacon of light…yes of course but then what would I put this one point in that would make me spec better? I think you need to cut out the 45 point talent to be a hybrid spec but MOST(cannot stress the MOST enough) are actually really good.
