Achievements: Volazj’s Quick Demise

Volazj is no doubt among the top 5 hardest Glory of the Hero achievements.  After patch 3.1 (maybe earlier), you can no longer Line-of-sight (LOS) this boss to escape Insanity. The idea is to burn him down asap before he goes into a third Insanity round.  The achievement Volazj’s Quick Demise requires you to kill him in two minutes or less.  No easy feat folks.  I have done this over 10 times in the past two months with pick-up groups.  The strategies I had read online at a couple popular sites, never worked.

I spiced up my own strategy based on my personal theories using the tools available in the game, and lo and behold, I got the achievement on the first attempt after carrying out my theory.  Some of you might be bursting in anger because you haven’t been able to accomplish this achievement.  Fret not. You will now be able to get it done right away.  The good thing is that you don’t have to discriminate on certain classes.  Some of the strategies found online would go as far as to suggest to not bring healers or to get your healer killed before he goes into insanity.

This was my particular group setup.  I did not plan it. They were just available at the moment, and were random: Warrior Tank, Holy Paladin, two shadow priests and a Warlock.

A Warrior Tank can deflect mind flay back at Volazj. That will do loads of damage.  Before engaging the boss, explain the strategy to your group.  The paladin has to create a macro such as this:

/target tank-name-goes-here
/cast Divine Intervention

You can use a Warlock to cast soulstone on the paladin, or you can have a druid to battle-rez the paladin.

Give two of your party members a Flask of Petrification.

Engage the boss.  Burn him down with all your DPS spells and abilities. Blow your cooldown trinkets to burst power output.  As soon as the paladin sees Volazj’s spellbar casting Insanity, press the macro button to cast Divine Intervention (DI) on the Warrior Tank.  The two shadow priests drank immediately the Flask of Petrification.  If you do your math, only the Warlock got affected by Insanity.  The Warlock only had one clone to fight.  As soon as he killed it, Volazj was back on business to be DPSed upon.  The Warrior Tank broke his Divine Intervention by clicking the buff icon.  The Holy Paladin used the soulstone to resurrect.  The two priests who drank the Flask of Petrification remained petrified however. You can’t cancel it.

You have to sit there petrified for a minute.  The good news?  The shadow priests were still petrified when the second Insanity was channeled.  I kept the tank healed, and drank a Flask of Petrification when the second Insanity started to be channeled.  Not sure if Divine Shield could have done the same job, but I didn’t take the risk.  I used the shield after clicking the Soulstone to heal safely. This time only the Warrior tank and the Warlock got cloned with shadow mirror units of themselves.  They dispatched both mirror copies, and by then the Shadow Priests were now out of the effects of Flask of Petrification.  Both shadow priests burned Volazj’s down.  We got the achievement done pretty fast.

You can have two paladins casting Divine Intervention on two party members.  Or have one paladin and a druid.  Or a paladin and a Warlock.

This group setup was not planned. It was based on who was available at the moment.  The strategy here was the Flasks of Petrification, and the healer getting out of the way by casting Divine Intervention with a means to resurrect.

The idea to DI the Warrior is that Warriors don’t have the necessary DPS to kill too many adds—and the problem with this achievement is the timer. Volazj has to die within two minutes or less.  Taking away the healer and the tank from the effects of insanity, solves most of the problem.  Having only one player affected, ensures that the mirror copies are minimal and Volazj is forced to return to combat where he can get DPSed down.

You can invent any kind of group setup without discriminating a specific class.  The materials for Flask of Petrification are: Stonescale Oil x 7   Mountain Silversage x 3, Black Lotus x 1 and Crystal Vial x 1.  Stonescale Oil requires Stonescale Eel x 1.  These can be fished off Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris, the coast of Azshara, and off the Revantusk Village port in Hinterlands. Good luck.

Its quite a lot easyer to just bring 4 melee and a shaman healer, i did this the day my alt paladin dinged 80 and the group setup was Ret pala, DK Tank, Rogue, Kitty Druid and Resto Shaman. Took him down in 1 min 30ish seconds. We were all, with the exception of the shaman, alts who had dinged 80 < week ago. Melee is simply OP against this boss : )

You missed the part where this strat will work with any group composition?  That was the point of this post, that some strategies restricted who could go as does your suggestion (no doubt it works though).

Indeed.  This strategy probably works with any group composition.  It is a bit pricy. Probably around 40g minimum to get a few Flasks of Petrification.

I got the mats and created the flasks.  My elixir mastery proc’ed twice, so I got four flasks.  Gave one to each of the two shadow priests, and kept the other two for myself, since I could DI the tank, leaving the Warlock to do his clean up.

I couldn’t believe how simple this achievement was.  And seriously, I have tried every kind of group setup in the past two months.  The closest I got him was 12k health before wiping.

It is hard to get this done with a pick up group. I decided to post this strategy because I know how hard it is for certain classes to find a group for this particular achievement.

People discriminate certain classes for this achievement.  The other achievement that discriminates a tad is Less-Rabi which requires to spam interrupts on Moorabi to stop him from transforming into a mammoth.

People would usually invite rogues and shamans mostly. A moonkin would be very frowned upon from a Less-Rabi run, for example.
