Athene Speaks (and He’s Still Saying He Was First)

Posted 17th Nov 2008 01:11 PM by Maticus

Athene has released a video in which talks people through how he got to level 80 so quickly (hey, he only made it to level 79 before getting banned…). He actually addresses the issue of getting banned, and for once talks about everything sensibly and honestly. There’s no messing about, it’s just a straight forward guide on how he managed it. I wouldn’t recommend copying his method obviously, but it’s an interesting watch. And he’s a much nicer guy without all the crap he normally talks raspberry

In the video, you get to see a full instance run, what they take with them on a run, every single level ding up to 79 and the moment they got banned.

Yeah, in all his greatness he still boasts his “heroic deed” and claims to be the best, which lends me to believe that he isn’t that great at all wink

I usually don’t like his videos but this one was quite surprising.  He seemed rather mature about the whole thing.

Idd he does seem to have been mature about the whole thing, I would never have thought he would make a video like this

Who cares what he says or claims? He’s just a loudmouthed jerk who thinks he’s the best, and does’nt see that in the end, all of his claims are worthless.

Athene knows very well that all his claims are worthless, he practically says so in the video.

You also have to remember that “Athene” is an act.  Knowing that his videos are all for show and entertainment, I was very surprised to see him put out a WoW video that wasn’t associated with the act.

He was not permanently banned, and has now had his account made playable again, but blizz did revert his character back to level 70.

I also feel sorry for him a little here, although I usually hate his vids etc. But he was told directly that he was allowed to do it, and then told something different at a latter time.

The issue is not whether Athene is a likeable fellow. The issue is he and his friends attempted to do something in game they were told was acceptable by a company representative. The fact is Blizzard can be and are often times asses about things. This is a perfect example of such a case. His tactics may be controversial sure but I know plenty of folks who’ll argue this very website and what it represents are akin to cheating. Put the disk in and play it as it comes from the store is all they’ll allow for and anything else is a crutch for weaker players. Blizzard says mods are okay…until they decide for no good reason and without adequate explanation that the one you rely on the most isn’t compatible with their philosophy and “fix” the game to disallow your mod to work. Shoe’s on a different foot then isn’t it? These guys most likely could have achieved a first without mob tagging and just blasted the instances straight up. I wish they had. Of course that’s not to say that even though playing 100% stone cold legit Blizzard wouldn’t have come along with some BS crap and done the exact same thing. Blizzard didn’t have to do what they did at all, they did it because they were in jerk mode that day, sad.

I actually disliked Athene from his earlier movies, even though I knew it wasn’t completely serious. I just didn’t like his style.

To hear about and see it from his point of view through this video changed that. If it can be proven, that the GM allowed it before they started, I think this is an important debate to have.

And especially because the lvl 70 World First did mob tagging as well, this should be different. They could still choose to revert their XP, but at least do something to tell people this is not allowed beforehand. And admit that it is something you just decided on.

I am all for not allowing mob tagging, but the way this was handled was unprofessional.

The main difference between world first lvl 70 (and the official world first lvl 80) is that they were outside of instances where mob tagging occurs all day long. Athene (wich was not actually the character being leveled) and his crew, took advantage of a system in an instance, that is not supposed to be working the way they exploited it. The constant going out and in of the party, is not meant to be used in that matter. This is also why you will be teleported home if you are out of the group for more than 59 seconds. Even though I can see why Blizzard banned the accounts and reverted the XP gained, I am totally on Athene's side here and his achievent should be recognized. It's a nice vid and a great feat and it's teh suck that Blizz didn't feel the same way.
