Blizzard And Microsoft Talk Xbox 360 Successor For Next-Gen MMO?

Rob Pardo confirmed at the GDC 2009 that Blizzard Entertainment and Microsoft are talking about the Xbox 360 successor.  And by the looks of it they want its successor to have a keyboard and mouse peripherals and tools to allow MMO and RTS gameplay on consoles.  The potential is enormous. Imagine World of Warcraft, Starcraft: Ghost, Starcraft II and even Diablo III on PC and Consoles.  It is the culprit of the Next-Gen MMO no doubt.

The future is looking brighter for Blizzard and all its millions of fans if Microsoft can pull the right cards off its sleeve and places them into the table to make it possible.

Blizzard Quote:
Rob Pardo: “There are are so many games like we make at Blizzard that we don’t take to consoles because they don’t support the input device, and you end up with crappy ports. That’s why RTS games never do well on consoles,” he said.

“If I was them, I’d be sitting around trying to figure out what’s a cool input device that supports all types of new kinds of games.”—read more

This has come up before, but never caught on.

Sony talked about keyboard + mouse gameplay on the PlayStation 2 even before it was released (it was part of reason they included USB and mini-FireWire ports on it). The concept came up again when the ill-fated Hard Drive add-on was released. I think Final Fantasy XI even supported keyboard + mouse on the console.

PS2/PS3 support mouse and keyboard but Microsoft Banned Keyboard and mouse peripherals even though their were compatible ports because they wanted clear blue water between consoles and PC’s.

Hopefully Blizzard’s voice has enough power in it to make console makers realize that:

If you force the game to work around your shitty system, the end result is not going to be as good as if you design your system that enable the games to go wherever they can and reach their true potentials.  That doesn’t mean propaganda saying that your system can do this and that better than before but never addressing the real issues that hinder the developers.

In that sense, Microsoft was the biggest winner in the eyes of developers with the XNA, Xbox Live, and signing PC developers.  Mean while, PS3 was too busy staring and drooling at its own hardware spec to do anything and Wii was a hollow system too busy being a gimmick and working the media propaganda machine.
