Blizzard On Lich King Difficulty

Posted 19th Nov 2008 10:42 AM by Maticus

When the newly-combined Nihilum and SK Gaming cleared Naxx 25 and Malygos over the weekend, it prompted many questions from the community about the difficulty level of Lich King; is it just too easy now?

Blue poster Zarhym responded to some of the concerns on the official forums:

Q u o t e:
I understand wanting to make something more available to the general public, but i thought that was why the 10/25 man versions were made available for all raids.

You are correct about the 10/25 man versions of raid dungeons being added to allow for more accessibility of the general population. That said, I think you draw an incomplete conclusion when you use the fact that the current 25 man dungeons have been cleared by the top guilds in the world to argue we’ve made this content a little too accessible to the general public.

Q u o t e:
I must admit, I love what you’ve done with WotLK, but it was extremely disappointing to see that all raid content was cleared by a nihilum/SK guild in 3 days.

Keep in mind that guilds like this are comprised of people who have bested every raid encounter we’ve released since Onyxia and Molten Core. They’ve made it a focus for years now to conquer every piece of PvE content we put out there, and do it first. Knowledge, experience, and teamwork are built rapidly when struggling through so many different boss encounters.

Now, I’m not arguing that the raid content is any easier or harder than in the past. I’ve not done any of the 25 man raids yet. I do get the feeling though that the majority of the people I’ve seen on the forums specifically arguing that the content is too easy, based on the performance or opinions of the top guilds of the world, have not experienced the content either.

Is it possible you will draw the same conclusion when you’ve cleared every 25 man encounter through Arthas (when his time comes)? Of course. When your intuitions grow into experience after you’ve made such accomplishments you’ll have better ground from which to justify your disappointment.

Of course we’re monitoring your feedback and experiencing the content ourselves. I reiterate that we’ll always consider adjusting content for greater ease or difficulty if we feel it is necessary to maintain a fun and rewarding game.[/BLUE]

Those guilds are just freaks. They raid every evening and they love to die, because then they know that they did something wrong and can improve it! It are lifeless geeks who kick on killing raidbosses before anyone else… :] I just love to play the lore :D

Dont put them down just cause you dont enjoy the same things they do. Some of them would probably have something negative to say about you immersing yourself in the lore. To each their own and we are all different. We all have our own definition of fun and what aspects are rewarding. Who am I - or you - to call them geeks with no life just cause they enjoy something we do not?

im also pretty irritated that all the raid stuff so far is already done,

I’m glad they have finished it. Now I hope they will move on to the next game. I prefer WoW to be tailored to the other 99% of people that play.

Why is this such a big deal?
The two best and fastest progressing guilds in the world merged and then rofl-stomped content they’ve beaten countless times in beta when it finally went live.  We’re looking at the top 0.001% of the WoW gaming population beating up on entry level raids which they probably outgear anyway.  Gratz on the World first and all that but color me unimpressed by the accomplishment or the (cue up scary music) implications of them beating the content so easily.

100% agree TPMdm, Naxx isn’t even a new dungeon - the fight mechanics are pretty much that same as they were originally so there was no need to figure out exactly how to beat it in WotLK for these guys - but they’re not the reason it was brought back anyway!

I’m more disappointed that 5 mans are so easy… my group of four 72s (including tank) and one 75 had a heyday in Gundrak without having any cc… every instance before that seemed really easy… and I’m not a hardcore player by any means. We’re were in mostly ZA/BC heroic token gear.

Are the regular five mans supposed to be so much easier now?

You have to sit and wonder what bearing these guys think their choice of how they play WoW has on the wider community and why they choose to make comments as if they represent everyone’s experience of the game.

Add up all the time these guys spent on beta learning the fights (and presumably learning the most efficient way to level fast as well), how much time they spent levelling (or more accurately not sleeping) from when WotLK went live and their previous experience at naxx 60 and you’ve likely got a pretty big number of hours of content for a more average player to get through over the coming months. You can probably add on a bit more for the lower average skill level of “normal” raid groups and corresponding increased time to learn encounters too.

Even quite committed raiders may only spend maybe 4-5 hours a night playing and don’t have access to Beta. Many won’t have played Naxx at 60 so will be learning the fights fresh and therefore find them correspondingly more challenging.

I think Blizz’s comment is entirely correct; everyone can make a proper assessment of the difficulty of the raid content once they’ve experienced it themselves rather than jumping on the opinion of a very select group of elite players making up a tiny fraction of the player base as if it is gospel. Blizz can’t balance content around something like 50 people at the top end, they have to consider the other 10,999,950 as well.
