Blizzard Re-thinking Flying Mounts In Azeroth?

Posted 19th Jun 2009 03:15 PM by Maticus

There has been a heated discussion on this topic taking place on our forums recently, but up until now most of us would rule out Blizzard ever allowing flying mounts in 'old' Azeroth.

However, Blizzard community manager Nethaera has just got players talking by bringing up the subject of taking to the skies in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms. Apparently, it's just a technical problem, rather than a decision by Blizzard that is stopping this being possible. Read on below, then take part in the discussion:

Blizzard Quote: (Source)
Q u o t e:
**BLIZZARD**

want to acquire more subscribers and keep people paying, then remove the level requirements and making them usable in old azeroth

its that simple

millions of subscribers would reroll and people who quited long ago would come back and pay again, who cares about the un-textured and imersive parts of azeroth, we all know they are thier anyways

The old world was not designed to support flying (this is a technical issue currently, not an unwillingness to allow this on our part) and by having the level requirement for flying, it allows us to set a pace at which we feel content should be accessed. As you can see by the recent mount changes, this could be readdressed at a future point in time.

...We're Blizzard, of course this is brought up in conversation and more. We're always taking a look at different aspects of the game and trying to find a way to improve upon the experiences that players get to have within it. We have a lot of ideas and things we'd love to do. It always comes down to prioritizing those things, looking at the larger picture, cherry picking the best ideas and finding ways to make them happen. We are by no means short on ideas for the future nor are we blind to what topics come up from the community in regard to, "wouldn't it be cool if." It's what drives us on.

Maybe they can make flying possible in Gilneas in the 3rd expansion then? It’s “old world”, too ^^

Yeah nobbie, I really wouldn’t be surprised if they announced this at BlizzCon with news of the next expansion smile

Very good news.

If the xpack isn’t the announcement at Blizzon maybe flying mounts in the original zones will be the big reveal?

A huge amount of work involved however, to make all the original areas viewable from above.

I don’t think we’ll be able to fly in old Azeroth anytime soon, not even in Gilneas (plus that wouldn’t really be necessary if it’s just inside one zone). Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to soar above old areas, remembering all the good times spent in them; I just don’t think it’s likely to happen soon: as Nethaera said, it’s all about prioritizing, and I’d wager this isn’t very high on the devs’ list.

One the other hand, we could be able to fly in the Emerald Nightmare if that is indeed the big focus of the next expansion.

Ok, The old world is huge so I understand that the benefit of having the flying mounts are less then the effort required…

... but it is possibile to go step by step, starting from the populate capital city, outside those areas maybe flying really close to the ground (in this way probably you are sure to don’t allow the player to go where the should not).

well.. transer are a bit boring and moving fast will be a great idea grin
