Cogent Connection Issue

Posted 17th Mar 2008 04:58 PM by Maticus

If you have been unable to play WoW due to the issues with Cogent, you may be interested to see the latest statement from Blizzard about the problem. Thundgot just made this announcement, and it looks like there’s no easy solution on the horizon :(

[blue=http://www.wowblues.com/eu/1503-cogent-connection-issue-3190831945.html]Cogent has decided not to exchange traffic directly with TeliaSonera’s AS 1299 or indirectly with AS 1299 through a third-party provider. As a result, Cogent has partitioned the Internet and disrupted the flow of traffic between Cogent and TeliaSonera customers. While this has a negative impact on some users of the Internet, this effect is the result of Cogent’s decision and is unfortunately beyond TeliaSonera’s control.

What I wanna know is: why?

Is this AS 1299 thingy "bad"? Is it the root of all spammers? Is it distributing viruses to the world? Is there too much traffic between it and Cogent? Does Cogent intend to break WoW’s hegemony by cutting their customers off?

The answer to "why" is because Cogent is a bunch of crybabies.  Cogent and Telia have been peers for a long time, that means Cogent and Telia will exchange each other’s traffic at no cost.  Cogent has decided this arrangement is no longer acceptable and wants to be paid for the traffic it receives from Telia.  Basically Cogent thinks they’re big enough that they can do whatever they want (they’ve done it to other smaller providers in the past).  Unfortunately for Cogent, TeliaSonera is the largest provider in Europe so it probably won’t work out like they hope.  Telia needs to find some new peering partners and not rely on known shakedown artists like Cogent.
