Community Unhappy With Blizzard Forum Ads

Posted 20th Dec 2008 06:11 PM by Rushster

As some of you may have noticed, the official forums are now sporting new banner ads which have not gone down well with the community. A forum spam-fest ensued shortly after the ads appeared and threads were being nuked quickly by the Blizzard team to keep some sort of sanity on the boards. A single thread remains for feedback as it’s one of the few that were actually sensible and coherant

The ads have been planned for a while following the deal with Massive and Intergi so they were to be expected. The ads themselves are for Blizzard’s own products so I’m not quite sure what all the fuss is about as they are pretty unobtrusive. The harsh reality for most websites, including this one, is that ads need to be run to keep the sites afloat. The grievance from WoW players comes from the fact that players feel their monthly sub to Blizzard should cover the cost of running the official site and the staff required to keep it ticking.

Blizzard are of course open to feedback on the issue and we suggest you use the above thread if you have any comments for Blizzard on the ads. What are your thoughts on the new ad additions?

Kaspersky blocks 80-90% of te ads (at least the ones that use tracing cookies) for me so I don’t see them either.

Kaspersky, Firefox, AdBlocker+ and RIP in combination are brilliant, no ads on any sites!

It doesn’t matter, we pay 15 dollars a month to use those forums, they’re not free forums. If they would like to have it to where you log in and the ads go away, fine by me… Until then, shut them off… We already paid for the game, we don’t need to see something telling us to buy it again, or “Buy the trading card game now!” don’t care, stop it.

I do see people’s opinions on the Blizzard ads are as you are paying a sub. However, ad blocking here is a big no-no as we don’t charge a sub. Block ads on WorldofWar.Net and we can’t pay the bills and then there won’t be a site to visit after a month or so. In general I think Ad blocking is extremly short-sighted of web users, sites do rely on it to keep things going and its a shame that some good sites may go to the wall if the majority of site users block.

The ads on Blizzard’s site are for their own products so I don’t see any harm in them actually being there, I didn’t think they were that intrusive.

As for the ads here, if anyone is having issues, annoyances etc please do PM me, we like to try and keep things reasonable for everyone.

Considering I don’t touch 99.9999% of ads Rush, it’s about the same as if I did have all of those ad-blockers. How many people honestly go “Hey, that ad made me want to pay 15 dollars a month! That 8 different picture ad totally got me.”? I’ll bet close to none.

I disliked how the ads on the sides messed with the formatting of the topics so now they are gone. I just think Blizzard went a little ad crazy with the amount of crap they put up (ads on the main page, ad banners at the top of pages and ads at the sides of topics) so now in turn I won’t see any from them :p

I already paid Blizzard 15 dollars every month, 25 dollars for a simple char xfer and 15 dollars to change my fur color and face which the barbershop should of been able to do. I am not going to let them throw a billions ads in my face when I am viewing the forums while at the same time screwing with the formatting.

As for other sites I only get bothered by the ads that send you to a page with the ad taking up your whole screen and eventually giving you a skip button. And I am quite glad that I haven’t seen one of those ads since I downloaded adblocker. I understand sites need to pay for bandwidth and server costs but those type of ads are about equal to me walking by a store and having a store employee coming outside the store and shoving pictures in my face when I have no interest with what they are selling.

What people don’t realise is you don’t have to click ads to help sites, simply show them. Most sites get paid on what is called CPM (cost per thousand) which does not require users to click ads, simply display them.

What is happening now is ad agencies are thinking up new ad formats which, I hate to say it, are even larger and some may consider more intrusive. That’s the harsh reality of advertising but there is a balance between annoying users and keeping things afloat. However that balance does need to be struck. Remember though, ad blocking equals no website so that’s the decision you are making not only for yourself but everyone else.

I did not know this, AdBlocker+ now disabled on worldofwar.net.

“15 dollars to change my fur color and face which the barbershop should of been able to do”

Have you ever been into a barbershop that is able to do plastic surgery?...
