Countdown to Swimming Mounts

Posted 26th Nov 2008 06:29 PM by Maticus

As revealed at BlizzCon, Blizzard intend to introduce swimming for our existing ground mounts in the next content patch. This is something a lot of players are really looking forward to, me included, but it's especially frustrating to know that it's done and ready, we just won't see it for several weeks.

When we asked Jeffrey Kaplan what we could expect to see in the first content patch after WotLK, he told us a bit about the new swimming mount feature:

We're going to make it so all ground mounts can swim. Players always found it very disturbing that you'd be in Un'goro Crater and you're riding along on your mount and you hit that one little bit of water and suddenly you have to resummon the mount again. Shaman for quite some time have enjoyed how it feels on Ghost Wolf when you hit the water, yeah you slow down but at least you keep swimming and if it's just a small patch of water you pick up speed again. So that's definitely something we had initially wanted to get into WotLK, it didn't quite make it but it will definitely be in the patch that follows, it's already complete as a matter of fact.

The first content patch of The Burning Crusade came out in June 2007, four months after the release of the expansion. Do we really have to wait that long, or can we hope that the feature will be added before then?

I really hope we don’t have to wait 4 months for this.  Although its not as bad as Harry Potter 6 getting moved back 8 months (to summer 2009) so WB would have a summer movie… oh yeah, and it’s completly finished as well!

Really wish this gets added within the next two months. It can be quiet annoying to get dismounted, specially if you have a train of mobs that aggroed you. You wouldn’t expect to be dismounted so you don’t mind aggroing. Unless you are a healer with divine shield or fear, you will probably not survive such an incident.

I don’t know if anyone else noticed but as soon as 3.0.2 hit it was clear that mounts were going to work in water. one of 3.x’s features is that the mounts grey if you can’t use them. IE you go in a building you can’t click your mount. But the ground mound does NOT grey in water. Flying mount does but ground mount stays lit up, in fact you can even summon it in water but it’ll just fail when progress bar completes. This is clearly an partially implemented in current patch already just not fully enabled, but fact that it’s already coded client wise makes me wonder if it’s simply the server disallowing it and a simple hotfix could enable it

Sooner rather than later hopefully, it’s one of my pet hates dismounting in water :(

heres hoping that reply to the suggestion of levitate working while mounted: “interesting” gets followed through on, DK’s and shamans forms can walk on water!

As to patch im expecting 3.04 within a fortnight and 3.1 in 3 months or so. However blizzard cant wait too long, we were discussing in guild today how easy it is to clear naxx and the other instances and gear with heroic loot of the same iLevel too. A fortnight from release and our laid back casual guild has cleared everything bar 1 wing of nax (time issue, we havent got round to starting it yet) and malygos. The only thing slowing us down is waiting on people to hit 80, we have only 3 healers and 4 tanks so cant guarentee them all for one night. But every day another 5 guildies are hitting 80.

We envisage everything cleared within another fortnight and a long wait till ulduar of only being able to perfect our gear with no challenges.

After leveling my DK on the beta, going back to swimming on my Warrior was a real pain, not just because of the speed, but the whole summoning of the mount thing. Can’t wait for this to go live, whenever that might be.
