The game Dungeons and Dragons, which was the inspiration behind most fantasy games including World of Warcraft, is finally going online. Yes, there is already Dungeons and Dragons Online by Atari, which is estimated to have around 100,000 subscribers worldwide, but this new game will not be anything like the MMORPGs we know and love, don’t expect a fully interactive 3D world; the graphics will represent the tabletop game.

This is being done in an effort to boost the D&D roleplaying community, many of whom find it difficult to take the time out regularly to travel and meet up with other gamers. Wizards, the Hasbro Inc. subsidiary that publishes the game, claim this new step will bring many D&D players back together, who may have stopped playing due to moving away or losing touch with their fellow gamers.
But it’s a risky move, D&D hasn’t done well on computers in the past, and this new edition isn’t going down well within the D&D community. A company that makes supplementary books for the game, Paizo Publishing, will not be supporting the 4th edition, and are planning to start making its own game based on the current edition.
Like WoW, the online version of Dungeons and Dragons edition four will have a monthly subscription of $14.95 (reduced to $9.95 for a yearly contract). Find out more about the next edition and how the game will work at the D&D homepage.
