If you’ve already started saving stacks of gold for the next tier of riding in Northrend, you might as well go find something better to spend it on, because Bornakk has confirmed that Blizzard doesn’t plan to extend the skill any further in the next expansion.
The current highest skill is 300, which allows players to ride epic flying mounts. This skill costs 5000g, and to my knowledge is the biggest single pay-out in the game to date. Speculation began last night, about the cost of the next riding level. Bornakk was quick to stomp on the discussion though:
[blue=http://www.wowblues.com/us/what-will-require-375-450-riding-skill-5835085250.html]We don’t currently have plans to add another tier of riding skill to the game in Wrath of the Lich King.
Sorry, no flying bears planned.
Well, there will be things that cost money in Wrath of the Lich King, we have no plans to remove currencies.
Note: This has nothing to do with the purchase and/or process of allowing your flying mount to fly in Northrend.[/blue]

I have to believe that 5,000 gold will be lowered. The other riding skills were lowered, xp to level was lowered…quest xp was bumped.
I still don’t have an epic mount because as primarily a holy priest I travel by raid summon and do few if any outdoor quests anymore. Way back when I became exalted with skettis and ogri’la and need to do the same with SSO, but you can’t fly on the isle and you won’t be able to fly in WoTLK at least in teh beginning.
I’ve put it on the back burner and am spending $ on things like epic gems and 5 night a week raiding.
I read somewhere that the reason it isn’t being increased was simply because the game mechanic wouldn’t work correctly with faster mounts. I’m not sure if thats true or not but I do recall reading it somewhere in a blue post with details about how some players see mobs “fall from the sky” which is what the spawn process looks like and we shouldn’t ever even see that.
