Dynamic Shadows in Lich King

Posted 22nd Jul 2008 12:47 PM by Maticus

Blizzard CM Datth explained to us how to get the new fancy shadows working in the Lich King Beta a few days ago:

[blue=http://www.wowblues.com/us/new-client-features-8202530869.html]Shadows!
config.wtf - SET extShadowQuality “X”
in-game - /console extShadowQuality X
- Valid numbers range from 0 (old shadow system) - 6.
2 and up seems to deal with the distance of the shadows
Shadow discussion - Increased Shadow Quality[/blue]

This new feature produces really cool looking shadows, including life-like ones from your characters, instead of the grey blob we have now. Dadesign2 filmed a couple of examples of these new graphics, check them out below:

This is exactly the sort of improvement they should be doing! Thumbs up smile The problem with radically overhauling the engine (putting aside the amount of work) has to be the fact that it would exclude a lot of players, especially those playing on laptops. Next up improved pre-BC character models and water? Here’s hoping..

The way Blizz have done this is perfect, people with lower spec computers just don’t raise the settings, but if you have a high-end machine you can benefit from the improvement.

Like you said Xeodus, thumbs up Blizzard! Their excuses for not improving the graphics engine can be bypassed, surely. I know they don’t want to alienate players with older machines, but just add more things like this with graphics options?

Good for Blizzard… Now update my pre-TBC chars so that it doesn’t look like a 12 pixel is fighting a 20K pixel and that’ll be nice. I may have a slightly slow computer, but it doesn’t mean I don’t want to see at least slightly increased graphics.
