This year’s ECTS was held at the new modern convention centre ExCel in the heart of London’s Docklands and was the first year that the majority of the big players like Eidos, Microsoft and Sony kept away from the event’s show floor. Despite this Blizzard showed their commitment to the European gaming market by announcing their new product on the first day.
Blizzard’s press conference, which was the second press conference of the event, was an invite only affair. If you’re names not on the list, you’re not coming in was definitely the tact Blizzard were trying this year. The queue for the press conference started to form a good 20 minutes before the start time with eager journos gagging to find out what the next product would be. At 12:15 the doors were opened and many were turned back from the invite only event, this was billed as an exclusive showing. Perhaps they were going for hype rather than expanded coverage. At previous events the 2 press conferences were always jammed full but at least everyone got to take part in the occasion. We attended the first and while there were seats going spare, some poor sods had to be content with pressing their faces against the windows to catch a glimpse….
