Has a WoW Contender Finally Emerged?

A new MMORPG recently released in Asia is causing a storm, and according to gaming site necrosis.com, ‘Soul of the Ultimate Nation’ is another game that could seriously take on WoW once it reaches western shores.

The game, currently unheard of here in the west, was created by Korean company Webzen, then sold to The9, the same company that run WoW in Asia. As you can see below, the images borrow heavily from the Lord of the Rings movies, but the cinematics are said to be stunning. Reviews are gushing, claiming the graphics are akin to a true life-like experience, and SUN is also said to have truly addictive game play, something most graphically intense games seem to lack.

Check out the game play trailers, featuring PvE and some PvP action.

I’m always sceptical of claims that a certain game will kill WoW, and I doubt this is the one to do it, but SUN appears to tick all the right boxes. What do you think?

Name all the Korean/Asian MMO’s that do great in the west.

I might be huge enough in Asia to rival WoW worldwide, but I highly doubt that it would rival WoW in the west. Our MMO tastes are far too different and I don’t think micro-transactions will ever pick up big time for an MMO in the west. Hardcore gamers will avoid it because they don’t want people that paid for their gear around them, and casual gamers will avoid it because they don’t want to pay to be viable.

Does anyone know how WoW ranks in Asia as an MMO? is it tops there also?

Obviously any game that tops the charts will be overthrown one day. Ultima (+ online) was a giant in its days but eventually people grew out of it. Diablo 2 remains the champion of hack and slay, and will remain until Diablo 3 is out. No Titan quest or Sacred changed that. So one day the WoW days will be over and the best that Blizzard could possibly achieve is overtake it’s very own WoW with WoW 2 at the “box-office”

Until that happens, there have been just so many “WoW Killers” and neither the concept of a totally free online game (Guildwars) nor in a popular universe (LotR) nor with better graphics (AoC) has overtaken WoW. Now we are seeing the supposedly next killer game, before the killer game that was really going to kill WoW (Warhammer online) is even out.

I guess the press needs something to write smile

Surpassing wow in asian market really doesn’t mean much, since so many games have done so in the past.  Trying to beat WoW at its own game is like throwing an egg at a rock, the best way to go is to aim for a different niche market, like Free 2 Play.  That is, if you were trying to win a fight against a boxing champion, do you think you should use a pair of gloves or a gun?  I don’t see any guns in this game.
