How Much Would YOU Pay?

Posted 18th Jul 2008 08:56 PM by Maticus

First the non-combat pet Tyrael, now Beta Keys. The latest hot property on auction sites today is a Lich King Beta Key. Many key holders are taking advantage of the sudden peak in interest since the beta went live, and are selling them to the highest bidder ( <—At time of writing, 54 bids, current bid price $490).

However, as Nethaera said in an earlier blue post, the beta is opening in stages.

[blue=http://www.worldofwar.net/n/415589/beta-blue-posts]The Wrath of the Lich King invitations have started to go out, and we have officially begun the beta test. As with The Burning Crusade, the beta-test process for Wrath of the Lich King will occur in phases, during which we will be inviting players who have opted-in to participate.[/blue]

A bought key might not give you access until much later into the beta, so don’t bid in haste, you might still get that email from Blizzard!

You kinda don’t get it…

By having a key, you are already in one of the accepted waves so far.  A bought key will give you access to the game now, but you may get your own key later, which you can then sell or give away or whatever.

I still don’t approve of this, though.  I think Blizzard is tying the key into the account so only the account it’s granted to gets to actually use the key.

When you randomly choose players for a beta, you’ll get some people that just want to profit from it.

I agree with Thortok, the beta should be tied to the account.

Also, I’m not sure Blizzard approves of this anyway.  This is like saying "Look how much gold is selling for!  What losers!"  And then linking directly to the gold selling website.  =/

Articles like this really shouldn’t be posted, or if they are, at least don’t include links.

I also agree that Blizzard should tie keys to certain accounts, that’s a very good idea and I hope it gets brought in.

However, the comments about the article are a bit off. I mean, what’s the point of having news without proof of the topic? Should we all just take Maticus’ word for it? And I think not writing news about is it like sticking your fingers in your ears and going "LALALALALALALALA!", it’s still news about WOW and the beta. Lots of news sites, including the BBC if I recall correctly, reported on the case of the player who sold his account for 10K Euros. Doesn’t mean they all support account trading, it was just something that was news-worthy. I remember Ebay links and screenshots on the BBC news item too, did you bash them for it?

Personally, I found it interesting that some WOW players would sell their beta keys, and how much other people are willing to pay for them. If you don’t like the news, don’t shoot the messenger.
