Veterans of WoW will know all about Captain Placeholder. He was an NPC that was present at Menethil Harbor docks in the beta of WoW. His purpose was to instantly transport players from Menethil to Auberdine before the boat paths were finalised. When the boats were finished and players had to wait for the transport ships, they remembered the Captain fondly. However, he was brought back for a short time after the launch of the game when a glitch caused the boats to malfunction, but that was the last we saw of him.
Machinima maker Cranius has made a video to commemorate the old Captain Placeholder, see the video and commentary after the break:
One tragic day when the ships in Menethil Harbor had gained the reputation of dumping their unsuspecting passengers into the ocean and sending them to a watery grave, our dear friend,
Captain Placeholder, came to our rescue. He met us on the dock, more than willing to immediately and safely transport us to the farthest shores of the globe. We became accustomed to this convenience and thus Captain Placeholder earned a place in all our hearts.
Some time later when the ships were repaired, Captain Placeholder's mission had been fulfilled and he left our presence, never to be seen again.
Eledainn, Night Elf Priest of Graystar, penned this song, "The Lament of Captain Placeholder", so that we would never forget. This is my rendition of that great song. I dedicate this rendition to mariners everywhere.
I hope you enjoy!

This is one of the best written and performed songs that I’ve heard in a LONG time. Yes I know its weird because it is a WoW song, but it almost felt like it was a real person they were singing about. Maybe I’m just sappy or maybe I’m insane, but it makes me really really miss him. If only we had tributes this good to real people who have done great things in REAL life.
P.S. Anyone out there that has chords to this song that can post a link, it would be great. Thanks.
