Music To Play By

Posted 29th Nov 2008 02:04 PM by Maticus

Blizzard have really pulled out all the stops with the music in Wrath of the Lich King. The first time we got a good chance to listen to it was in the cinematic. That chilling vocal as Arthas makes his way to Sindragosa's Fall is enough to make the hairs stand up on the back of anyone's neck, and that's just on a computer screen. Take it from me, when you see it on a full-size cinema screen with booming sound, like in the opening ceremony at BlizzCon 2008, it pretty much chokes you up (even if you're not a huge fan of the cinematic itself). The theme continues in the expansion, every zone has its own distinct yet fitting soundtrack, which is instantly recognisable after a short time spent in game.

Does everyone appreciate it though? I know several people who have their own music pumping out of their headphones as they level or PvP, it seems almost the norm nowadays. Personally, I enjoy the sounds of the game and the atmosphere each zone theme creates.

How about you, do you soak up the in-game sounds and music as you play, or drown it out with heavy rock or maybe a bit of drum'n base?

I’ll play with my own music from time to time, but more and more the in game music is really standing out.  In particular I really like the northern section of Dragonblight (Where all the dragons are…YAHRLY) and Grizzly Hills.

It keeps getting better and better, AND it doesn’t sound like an obvious loop like a lot of zones in original WoW.  Blizz, who has always done well with music, has come a long way.

Wotlk muic is a masterpiece. Period. People at blizzard, who are responsible for this part of the game take it to another level with each patch/expansion. I’ve never turned off WoW’s music and after listening to what they have composed for us in Wotlk I am 100% sure, that it’s not going to change soon. Big respect for Blizz music guys.

I love the Howling Fjord music with the wind instruments. Storm Peaks is good too.

The only reason I sometimes turn down the sound of the game is when I can’t hear the TS. There are some real masterpieces in WoW’s soundtrack.

I agree. The only time i have found myself putting on headphones is in older zones when i am just doing some serious mob grind. The music is far too amazing to compare it to the same old tunes i’ve heard a gazillion times on my ipod. besides, it really gets you in a “WoW” mood. PvP is a diff story tho. there metallica and disturbed are better at ambiance :D

The musical pieces of the 3 Tuskarr zones are the best - very meditative ^^

But all WotLK zones have fantastic, characteristic music with them, definitely Blizzards best so far.

I have WoW Music on at about 25% compared to just about everything else at 100% so that I can hear it in the background, or not at all if I’m really zoning out and playing hard =P. Most of the time, I don’t really even notice the music for the most part since I’m leveling up and concentrated on “2,3,4,5, next”.

About what Mazhulsage said: you think you don’t hear the music, but if you listen to a piece of the soundtrack seperately, you’ll probably realize you know it, and it will remind you of what you were doing, or where you were, when you heard it. That’s what’s amazing about Blizzard’s soundtracks: they’re not obstrusive, but they serve the ambiance and stick to your mind.
