New Expansion Might be Announced at BlizzCon 2009

Posted 3rd Jul 2009 03:12 PM by Medievaldragon

VideoGamer held an interview with World of Warcraft Game Director Tom Chilton as a follow up to their Leipzig coverage.  In this interview Tom Chilton confirms their plan for a yearly WoW expansion stands correct.  The South Seas, the Maelstrom and the Emerald Dream, (and can I say Gilneas hinted?) have pop into the radar through Chilton’s own lips.  So ... a yearly expansion (check) ... the south seas (check). See you at BlizzCon fellas.

Blizzard Quote:
VideoGamer.com: The first expansion was set in Outland, the second in Northrend, which was a little closer to home. Is there anywhere else left on the original map that can accommodate an expansion or does it have to be somewhere foreign?

TC: No I don’t think it has to be anywhere completely foreign yet. There are parts of the map that we have left ambiguous and unexplored. There are parts of Eastern Kingdoms and Azeroth that haven’t been filled out yet. Out there in the South Seas there are islands, there’s out where the Maelstrom is.

There’s still quite a bit of land mass. We keep referring to the Emerald Dream, which is maybe not exactly in Azeroth, but is sort of tied to it in some way or another. But there are definitely places in Azeroth itself that are close to home that haven’t been filled out yet, so there’s more room for that sort of thing.

We recently unearthed a new trademark by Blizzard that might or not tie-in with the theme of a Maelstrom and South Seas expansion.

We interviewed Chris Metzen and Micky Neilson last February, where they said there were plans for Gilneas, and talked about the upcoming World of Warcraft: Stormrage book which hits bookstores on February 2010. It deals with the Nightmare and the Emerald Dream.

The stars are aligning. (sits in yoga-position and hums).

So we’re talking about a late 2009 - early 2010 release, apparently. All the pieces of the puzzle are coming together…

There’s no way…

The alpha would be up already, then we’d have months of beta. They haven’t even announced it yet - how can he claim they still want a yearly expansion?? Madness!

Yeah, I got carried away there. ^^ I mean 3.2 isn’t even out yet, and there should be at least one more content patch, probably two, before the next xp pack.

So I guess the book would foreshadow the events of the expansion, like Arthas: Rise of the Lich King - except that it would be released earlier than the expansion.

Well, we haven’t seen a yearly expansion perse yet.  If they wanted to start pumping those out yearly, we would have to see a drastic change on the precedents.  They would have to announce the game at Blizzcon, and start beta right after (within a 2-6 weeks window after Blizzcon).

It would then be in beta 6 months or less. Would be shipped around January.

Expect the 3rd WoW expansion TBA at this year’s BlizzCon incl. a first preview trailer (Gilneas?) in the style of the first announcement of WotLK, and the beta in spring/summer 2010.
If everything goes well, we might see patch 3.3 with Arthas in December 2009/January 2010. The 3rd xpac could then be released in autumn/winter 2010.

PS: Diablo 3, by the way, should be released in 2010 as well.

Hmm, seems that list of expansions that floats around is further validated if this is true. I can’t wait for the likely engineer submarine mount and the tropical settings.

It will be interesting though, on how they integrate the seas with the current land masses, as well if flying mounts will be allowed. I’m sure high seas swashbuckling and tropical goblin resorts await.

Pirates and submarines? Yes, I think so.

And here’s crossing fingers for some Jules Verne references. grin

I am having so much fun in WoW right now smile  Even though I am still working to level my 9 characters O^O and have yet to hit level 80 on any of them, I am still really excited about the next expansion.

Blizz always seems to find improvements and new innovations to keep the game fresh and just plain fun - even casual players like me ^_~
