Next WoW Expansion Predictions: Summit of the Gurus

Posted 5th Dec 2008 05:41 PM by Medievaldragon

World of Warcraft has many lore gurus throughout the world who have been following the mythos since Warcraft: Orc and Humans throughout Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness and its expansion Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal, and its last RTS incarnation ... Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and its expansion The Frozen Throne. There are the bunch who became attracted to the lore and back-pedaled and purchased the previous games (like myself). I started with Warcraft 3 and the xpac and after World of Warcraft decided to acquire the older games. Got all the Warcraft novels and RPG books, and the comic book.

From experience of the game and all the quests I have found in Wrath of the Lich King and what I have read in the RPG books, there are two strong candidates for the next expansion:
  • Emerald Dream
  • South Seas
  • Another world

The Emerald Dream was visited after doing the Argent Dawn quest in Icecrown: A Story of Valor. A very small portion of the Nightmare to be exact. We know Cenarius and Malfurion are fighting it. And that Ysera is being affected somehow as mentioned by Itharius at the Wyrmrest Temple. The phase technology introduced in Wrath of the Lich King is a very high indication that Blizzard is experimenting with it in preparation for the Emerald Dream. They could rehash the old world applying phased zones to each region. Blizzard has been working on the Emerald Dream for years. Back on 2003, before WoW launched, Tigole acknowledged the Emerald Dream was in development. Many are aware some of the Emerald Dream files were in their hard drives for quiet a long time, until they were removed during a patch.

The South Seas got a lot of lore in the World of Warcraft RPG: Lands of Mystery book (2006). I remind you all the lore of Northrend was revealed in that very same book a year before WoTLK was announced officially. The PDF downloadable version is still on sale at a lowered price. White Wolf Publishing authors mentioned each region of Northrend (Zul'Drak, Borean Tundra, Sholazar Basin, etc.) and the species of each region, dungeons and some plots in that RPG book. Basically, Blizzard gave them some of their game design notes to work on. South Seas is a perfect candidate for the next expansion for this matter -- because extensive info about it was bundled within the same book. The South Seas contain the Tomb of Sargeras (Broken Isles), Isle of Kezan (Undermine), Plunder Isle, Zandalar Isle, Tel Abim Isle, Nazjatar and the Eye of the Maelstrom. Who doesn't love Pirates and ships, matey?

Each WoW game and expansion has had a specific special boss as final boss: WoW Classic (Onyxia), Burning Crusade (Illidan), WoTLK (Arthas the Lich King). There is no doubt who the South Seas final boss is ... Queen Azshara.

There was a quest in Dragonblight, at the Tuskarr village, that hints doom is coming from the Sea. Sounds like there's something from the depths coming out. Whether that's the naga or one of the Old gods that's yet to be seen.

As for other worlds, Metzen mentioned three planets that had been already planned -- he mentioned this at Blizzcon 2005. And four more planets after those. These will be accessible through the portals of Outland. The three portals to what Metzen referenced are already in the game: Death's Door (Blade's Edge), Twilight Ridge (Nagrand), The Clearing (Zangarmarsh). These portals in Outland were what tore apart planet Draenor, after Ner'zhul used the Book of Medivh, the Skull of Gul'dan, the Scepter of Sargeras and the Eye of Dalaran to open new portals to other worlds in order to conquer them. This was the main topic of Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal and what inspired the development of the Burning Crusade expansion. You can read how the events unfolded in the pocket star book ... World of Warcraft: Beyond the Dark Portal by Aaron Rosenberg & Christie Golden.

Mal'ganis said he would return to the homeworld to recover his strength ... so we got a perfect square-in-the-jaw hint the homeworld of the dreadlords still exists ... Xoroth.

There is also the possibility that we get a mix of two of these candidates. After all Burning Crusade introduced not only Outland, but two new areas: Quel'Thalas and Azuremyst. If you are a lore guru, share your own predictions.

Good conjecture, but I’d like to pick on one little nit (more a question really).  Isn’t this southseas you mention essentially the Maelstrom expansion as people have been calling it?

Sounds like there’s something from the depths coming out.

There was something about that in this small background story about Murlocs.

I wouldnt call onyxia the last boss of classic, if going by lore then that random orc in UBRS was more important, if you say that AQ40 and Naxx were cramming because of delayed expansion then you could say Neltharion was the original planned final boss.

The Maelstrom is part of the South Seas, but not to be confused. That doesn’t mean Blizzard wouldn’t name that expansion World of Warcraft: Maelstrom or Eye of the Maelstrom or something along those lines.

The South Seas is composed of many isles that aren’t exactly in the border of the Maelstrom. The RPG book refers to this area as the South Seas, and the Bloodsail Buccaneers also refer to the area as the South Seas.

As for Onyxia, I referred to the bosses Blizzard mentioned as of retail launch. Black Temple was announced to be launched at a later time via content patch, but it was announced before retail—so we knew the theme of Burning Crusade would have Illidan as the last boss.

Blizzard had mentioned the Illidan event and the Arthas event at the moment of retail launch or earlier. In the case of WoW Classic, there was no mention of future content patches.

I was in closed beta 2004 and was able to fight Onyxia and the Molten Core. Those were the only 40-man raids available at retail launch. Later on Blizzard released Blackwing Lair, Ahn’Qiraj, Naxxramas, and smaller raid dungeons such as Dire Maul and others.

It’s a matter of interpretation. Fans didn’t know any of those dungeons were going to be released and Blizzard didn’t talk about them before or during retail launch.

In such case, we could argue Kil’jaeden is the last boss of Burning Crusade since he is more powerful than Illidan, but we had no clue Blizzard was going to add the Sunwell Plateau back on 2006 when Burning Crusade went retail.

The Maelstrom is most likely based on what Blizzard said at Blizzcon 05.

The whole other planets thing was meant to be mini areas you would go to through the portals in Outland but it seems that idea like many others was scrapped or put on hold. I know they wanted to add one of them before WotLK or shortly after WotLK to show us what happened to Alleria and whatnot. It actually wouldn’t surprise me now if that ends up being the ‘secret raid’ after Ulduar.

The Dragonblight quest you bring up is talking about the Kvaldir and it’s just speculated that the homeworld of the Dreadlords is Xoroth.

We actually did know about Sunwell Plateau in a way back in 06 but Blizzard made it seem both it and Zul’aman were going to be regular zones. TBC’s main plot was more the Burning Legion and Illidan rather than just Illidan.

Yes I had heard that to, the other portals scattered around outland (I think theirs 4 maybe 5?) were planned as mini worlds to visit, this may still happen with Outland as a kind of bridge to other worlds.

Interesting piece of inquiry….Blizzard put a TBC raid in the old content (on the old continent even) and put a couple in as content patches.  Does anybody think they will do similar with WotLK content patches?  Will we see some WoTLK raids added which are located in either Outland or Azeroth outside of Northrend?

Onyxia wasnt the final boss in classic it was always planned to be Nefarion. Then with AQ 40 opening it was C’Thun and then with Naxx it was Kel’Thuzzud. It was just planned to be Nefarion since some never saw C’Thun or Kel

Actually Vincent it was always planned to be Kel’thuzad judging by the dungeon planning board Blizzard showed a couple years back for vanilla WoW. The big thing about vanilla WoW was that we never saw the dungeon ‘Dragon Isles’ released and they probably were the 4 small islands north of Lordaeron.
