Blogger Shamus Young has been playing WoW for a while now, long enough, he feels, to be able to make a list of things that bug him about the game. Some of them you can sympathise with, others are just plain silly. Let’s go through his complaints:
- Low drop rates for quest items - yes, annoying it’s true.
- Quest Locations are Vague - this can be helped by a number of things, database sites to look up the quest, or mods such as QuestHelper, which actually point you in the right direction on your minimap.
- Bag space is outrageously limited - We all come across the problem of limited bag space at some point, but you have to draw the reality line somewhere. A [item type=“preload”]Netherweave Bag[/item] can only carry so much…
- The Needless proliferation of ingredients - nearly all types of animal seem to drop different Cooking ingredients, do we need so many? They all take up that precious bag space.
- The Needless proliferation of food types - So many types of food, and many do the same thing, some with a slight variance. Is it necessary?
- Arbitrary Level restrictions - This complaint isn’t just aimed at WoW, most MMOs have level restrictions on things like armor, weapons and items, but what’s the point of having a restriction on training? As Shamus puts it, “Do you really need to be a seasoned warrior before you can learn how to smelt better? Do you need to have a firm understanding of arcane magics before you can properly command a needle and thread?”
- The realtime day / night cycle - distances aren’t realistic, so why does time have to be?
- Respawning monsters - Why have monsters respawn near players?
- Heavy Drinking Mages - Not just mages, but any mana users constantly have to stop progressing to replenish mana, sometimes once every couple of minutes.
- Wandering Elites are Asinine - Why put them in areas where most of the players wont be able to tackle them?
I must say, I personally disagree with most of this guy’s pet hates. What do you think?

seriously… im tired of people wanting everything given to them on a silver platter! that is how we got the very dumbed down belf and draenei areas… besides low drop rates might be low but its better than the alternative of blizz just making quests that tell you to kill a certain number of them…
as far as bag space the only real trouble i have with this is my bank space… they could totally add a nother row of bag slots in there if they wanted to…
i dont think the food thing is really that valid… having tried out tailoring im glad when i get lots of igredients for cooking on mobs as opposed to not very much with tailoring… besides compared to how many kinds of food there really are theres no where close to a lot…
the level restrictions on professions is a little unrealistic but still it shoudnt be a problem considering you have to go to higher level areas to get the materials anyway… there is an element of gameplay balance as well in not letting people twink out their alts’ professions…
um… complaining about a realistic day/night cycle? wtf? even if this was shortened blizz would still make things reset in real time… this one is just stupid…
respawning mobs on top of players is just a result of the game having set respawn points it chooses from… i dont think blizz can make it keep track of if a player is there or not and if they can i doubt they would to make it fair… besides you do get some warning because the mobs wait a few seconds after spawning to attack people…
i do agree that having to drink all the time is annoying especially being a warlock with little spirit on my gear and no mp5 either… this is worsened by the fact that im destruction specced which is an especially mana draining spec… makes me wish i were a mage sometimes so i could make myself some water whenever i needed it but oh well…
wandering elites are kinda ridiculous but it adds a sense of danger to an area and keeps people on their toes… having just gotten to exalted with netherwing i can vouch for this with those wandering ascendents everywhere on netherwing ledge… i got used to it after a while but i still got killed by them every now and then… while it can be annoying, it mixes things up…
res sickness does suck somewhat but blizz cant really make the spirit healers able to tell if your body is being camped or unreachable so its just something you have to deal with… and on top of that, ive heard multiple times that wow has one of the most lenient death penalties around so its not really something to complain that much about…
anyways yeah… this guy has some good points but mostly its just dribble…
as for the quest locations being vague… thats what actually reading the quest description is for… i cant tell you how many times ive had people asking me where something is for the quest and everytime ive said read the description and they were able to find it…
