Price to Beat WoW? 0.5 to 1 Billion Dollars

Posted 28th Feb 2008 01:19 PM by Leord

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has analysed the WoW place on the market, and during an investor meeting, he said it will probably require half a billion to a billion dollars to even have a chance to take on World of Warcraft. Having said that, he also acknowledges that even with such an investment, there are no guarantees of success.

Kotick also paid tribute to the talent at WOW developers Blizzard. “They have a model that is very well-developed, they have a very keen understanding of their audiences, and they’re just scratching the surface of opportunity in a lot of areas… These guys are among the best in the world of game development”

That’s a pretty big punt, by any investor’s standards.

What ARE you saying? Are you implying that most people don’t have a single billion dollars stashed away for MMO-making? smile

There is also a big amount of players who just buys anything that Blizzard makes because of the games they’ve made before. Kinda hard to make up to that with money probably.

I think the trick is not to beat WoW, but to get the players that don’t play WoW or those that left WoW. Or go with a subscription model like GW, that seems to work good as well (5 mil copies sold or something)
