Shamans and the "Mortal Strike" Buff

Posted 5th Mar 2008 05:04 PM by Maticus

Blizzard have said the recent improvement to the Shaman’s Flametongue spells is an attempt to make the Shaman more attractive to other players as a group member, despite their spec.

The change to Flametongue spells consists of a healing debuff, similar to [spell]Mortal Strike[/spell].The following has been added to the tooltip of all Flametongue spells on the PTR:

...reduces all healing done to the target by 25% for 5 sec. The healing reduction effect stacks up to 2 times.

Tharfor on the EU realms commented on the change earlier:

The ‘mortal strike’ effect that has been applied to the flametongue spells on the Public Test Realm was added as a way of making shaman more interchangeable for grouping and specc’ing.

As has been said the flametongue spells can be used regardless of your talent point allocation so this should be an extra tick in the list of reasons to take a shaman in your group regardless of what build they have.

Apparently, they needed to just come out and say:

“Healing has been changed in PvP to be half as effective. Good day.”

All I can say is thank god I’m Horde - with an average of 14% of Horde Players as Shaman, and only 3% Alliance, it’s not nearly as big a problem for me in regular BGs. Arena, though… good game. Healbot becomes Lolsmite/Mana Burn bot.

I seriously doubt it will be effective enough to be as generalistic as saying ‘healing will be half as effective’. even with the addition to FT, i still have a hard time considering using it in place of my WF, which is my mainstay when I’m PvP’ing in enhance mode. Even an OH WF proc is a hug boost in a shamans DPS, so to take a hit on my DPS to reduce someone’s healing ability? psh, id rather hit em twice as hard, throw an earth shock to interrupt that heal, and kill em faster, IMHO.

Not that I don’t see this as being beneficial. But I see it as being more of a tool for elemental spec and resto spec in PvP, and a nice addition in rading, at best. Ever see an elemental spec try to melee? lolololol. at least this gives them a slight edge more in that department.

I see the change to shamanistic rage as being far more impacting in PvP. We now get a 30% reduction to ALL damage for 15 sec, plus the mana boost. Mages and locks wont be able to freeze and fear and just watch the enhancement shammy die ( well at least as fast :D)
