Of Aspects and Elves
A letter from Archivist Gwin to her grace, The Honored High Archivist Veda
Grandmaster of the Stormwind Archives
Most Honorable High Archivist,
My lady, I write to you of a most unique encounter I had just yesterday in the town hall here in Darkshire. I was speaking with the town historian, a man named Sirra Van’Indi, when we were approached by a young but regal looking woman with the longest auburn hair I had ever seen. At the time I thought nothing of her physicality, but now looking back something about her seemed so very…unnatural. She greeted use with a friendly smile and a strong hand shake. Her skin was surprisingly smooth to the touch and warm as could be despite the cold weather.
She introduced herself simply as Alexandra and asked if I was Archvist Gwin of Stormwind. Naturally I replied yes. She smiled again and handed me a small wrapped package telling me it contained a record of history that would be very valuable to the archive. On the wrapping of the package it said simply “Veda”.
Unsure if this Alexandra could be trusted I asked where this book had been found. She told me only that her mother had found it and wanted it delivered to the archive immediately. I studied the package again for a moment and found no signs of magical tampering so I have no reason to doubt Alexandra’s words and sincerity.
Bowing slightly Alexandra told us she must take her leave and return to her mother’s home for she was needed for many other tasks. Smiling once to Sirra and once to myself she excused herself politely and left. I looked at the package in my hand then to Sirra. He simply looked confused and mentioned that no one in the town of Darkshire was named Alexandra.
I send this package to you unopened my lady for I feel this Alexandra is trustworthy though I cannot say why. If you have any need of me I will be in Darkshire for a while longer then resume my journey towards the mountains.
In Light and Knowledge your servant,
Gwin
For many millennia I have watched and partaken in world altering events. I have seen the fall of empires and nations, seen the sundering of the world, and witnessed two my own brothers fall to madness. Yet I must endure and move forward for my own sake and those I am charged with defending. I write this to you so that humans may know some of Azeroth’s history as I have seen it and endured it.
My titan matron, Eonar, The Life-binder, entrusted me with her power to aid the new life forms spreading across the world. She charged me with continuing her work. I have tried, blessed matron I have tried. At times I have succeeded and others, failed. I do not know what she would think of me now or what has happened. I can only continue on and atone for my mistakes and those of my kin.
Four others among my kind were also gifted by the makers, all brothers and a sister to me. Malygos and his children, blessed by Norgannon the Lore Keeper with dominance over the world’s magic. Neltharion, now called Deathwing and blessed by Khaz’Goroth The Shaper, charged as Warden of Earth ranging from the highest mountains to the lowest valley. Nozdormu, now called The Timeless One, blessed by Aman’Thul The Highfather, Lord of the Pantheon, was tasked with maintaining the ebb and flow of time. Lastly, Ysera, also blessed by Eonar, was empowered with influence upon nature and what is called the Emerald Dream. Hence force she is usually referred to simply as The Dreamer. Each of us was lord of our own dragonflight and we took the title of the Five Aspects. After the Titans left Azeroth we each began our vigil over the world.
For a time Azeroth was at peace and our work continued uninterrupted. Until the arrogance of the Kaldorei, whom you know as Night Elves, Queen Azshara and her “Highborne” would unleash the Burning Legion upon the world. To curios they began to plumb the secrets of the Well of Eternity, the source of the Azeroth’s magic and link to the Great Dark Beyond. Only the warning of Malfurion Stormrage and the rebel Kaldorei was I and my fellow dragons made aware of what exactly was happening in the Elf capitol and we moved to assist in this world’s defense.
What happened next has left a bitter stain upon my heart. My dear brother Neltharion betrayed us as the battle raged. He created an artifact called the Demon Soul which he said would borrow power from all of five aspects into itself and be used to destroy the Burning Legion. Believing he wanted only the best for Azeroth we agreed to share some of our power. During one of the great battles with the Legion Neltharion’s madness was made know to all. He assumed the name Deathwing and demanded all dragons and mortals alike swear loyalty and worship to him.
Weakened by the power we gave to the Demon Soul Deathwing had the advantage but it was dear Malygos and his blue dragonflight that attacked first seeking to destroy the Demon Soul and Deathwing before anymore damage could be done. They succeeded in weakening Deathwing but not before almost the entirety of the flight were dead or missing save Malygos himself. Even his most beloved Sindragosa was never seen again. I do not know what drove my brother to this madness but I know the aftermath. I know the damage that was done all too well.
In the end the Legion was defeated by the Night Elves and their allies, but not before the world was torn asunder and the Well of Eternity consumed with Azshara and her Highborne as well. These Highborne, thought buried beneath the waves, became the creatures you know today as the Naga. Some Highborne did survive and for a time helped to rebuild the elves society.
It was many years later Ysera, Nozdormu, and I returned to see how the elves fared. All was well until the Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage showed us the new Well of Eternity taken from water samples of the original well by his brother Illidan. Knowing the possible presence of the wells could attract the Burning Legion again we made a pact with the Night Elves that day.
I placed an enchanted acorn at the heart of this new well and within its power the acorn sprouted into a magnificent tree within the wells waters. Called Nordrassil by the Night Elves this tree would be a reminder of what had occurred and the eternal bond the elves now shared with nature.
Nozdormu placed upon Nordrassil his own blessing saying as long as the tree stood the Night Elves would be immortal and immune to disease or sickness.
Lastly, my dear sister Ysera placed her blessing upon the tree linking it to her Emerald Dream and the forces of nature that rest within. As part of this pact the druids, including Malfurion himself, agreed to spend many centuries at a time asleep within the barrow downs to walk nature’s path within the dream. Saddened to leave their people for so long the druids agreed and the pact was complete.
You know now Lady Veda of most critical time in Azeroth’s history. You know of the Night Elves great sin, of my brother’s fall into madness, and Malygos’s war upon your Kirin Tor for it was the Well of Eternity’s power that called forth the Burning Legion. I have done my best these many millennia to be a mother to the world and queen of my people. I have written only a small piece of history for my time is short as war consumes the world again and I have countless duties to perform.
I am Alexstrasza, Queen of the Dragons and Life-binder of Azeroth. May we speak in person Lady Veda when the world is at peace.

Excellent stuff! Nicely done
