The9 Loses WoW To NetEase?
Posted 15th Apr 2009 05:06 PM by Maticus [Edit this post]

According to Chinese site Sina, The9 has lost the license to operate the MMO World of Warcraft in China.

A leaked letter from the president of The9, Xiaowei Chen, to The9 employees apparently states that an unnamed domestic operator, who is already running a joint venture with Blizzard, has requested through Blizzard that The9 transfer WoW servers and hardware over to them at a reduced price of $22 million USD, for which The9 paid $73 million USD. An extra $1 million USD will be paid for the transfer of staff who work on WoW.

Rumours over who the unnamed company is all point to one place; NetEase. NetEase already works with Blizzard, last August it was announced that the company, which runs popular web portal 163.com, was to take over the operation of other Blizzard games in China including Warcraft III and Starcraft II.

NetEase is expected to announced the news soon, according to Sina. The9's WoW licence expires on 8 June 2009.

How many times have we seen posts like this, honestly? As in, “Hey, look the9” posts, that turn out to be bullcrap? I know of at least twice.

Sometimes rumours turn out to be false, but it’s my job to report anything that might be of interest to the WoW community.

In this case, the rumours were correct:

i wonder how strong of a legal sanction Blizzard will have to ensure that such transition happen without failures.

What if the9 is rich enough to get the laws altered so that they can continue to run the servers with expired license?  Or… if The9 decides to play it dirty and refuse to give the character data to NetEase properly, how many players would be willing to start over at lvl 1? lol
