To Level or ..... 80 already

With WOTLK upon us for over two weeks where do you stand in the leveling race?

That is a question that rumbles through the community with many different answers. Logging on to WOTLK and opening my guild tab to see all the new 80’s makes me a little bit uneasy at times. Still stuck at 75 now I feel that I have fallen behind in the race.

The question of the “race” is something to think about also. Is it really a race? Well for some people it is. Get to 80 quickly, get into the new content, and get the new gear. For others they are immersing themselves in the game. Blizzard has done a great job with incorporating quest lines that bring you through the entire continent and story lines that read through the quests perfectly. Many people don’t want to miss this content. So some personal choices have come into play into the rate of attaining 80.

With the choices that people have made there are also a number of people who believe that this leveling is different than the leveling in BC. In talking with a number of people in guild and the community they feel that it has been much tougher to hit the level cap in WOTLK than in BC. Some people feel that it is more of a laboring chore to get to 80 than an enjoyable task. Where do you fit in here?

Another thing we need to ask ourselves and look at is the position of the guild. We all know that things have changed in guild mechanics since release of the original game. The time of having the large guild with enough players to sustain a 40 person raid has long been gone. Now with 10 person versions of all dungeons we see another change in mechanics to guilds so what is your guild doing to help you get to the almighty 80? Some of the hardcore guilds are taking their people and running dungeons. Officers have split up to lead groups of lower levels through a number of dungeons to get their guild ready for Naxx and up to 80. There are other guilds who have the attitude of “well it’s up to you and when you get there let us know.”

Well since we are well on our way to 80 and many people have already hit the cap think of some of these questions and where you fit in and how you feel about some of the issues.

I’m in the same boat. I’m 75 while a lot of my guild is 80. They also play at least 4 times as much as me. I prefer to maintain a healthy relationship with my wife and career. To each their own.

Yeah - I only hit 77 last night (and had a celebratory flight in Icecrown!). Because the story is so much richer than TBC this time, I’ve been doing every single quest in a zone before moving on to the next - random early UK run aside. I guess if you played a lot more you could be at 80 already doing this but I expect a lot of people haven’t been playing through the content like that - but have been skipping ahead to level faster. I’m in Grizzly Hills at the mo and there are a lot of level 80s about doing quests…

I’ve been playing a bunch, but still leveling slowly.  I spend lots of time on professions, time on work, playing with kids, etc - it’s a bit more balanced (though my wife thinks I play too much).  The new content’s been fun, the quests have been interesting, and playing a death knight is awesome (got him nearly to 75 so far).

The only time I ever feel like I want to be level 80 is when my guild runs heroics.  Otherwise, I don’t feel left out at all - many of the 80s come help with lower-level dungeons and we all have a good time together.

I haven’t skipped a single quest in Howling Fjord or Borean Tundra. Skipping quests are like leaving loose ends, which I hate. I just finished up with those areas as I hit 75. I prefer to not miss anything up until 80 and when I ding I will focus on gearing up and raiding. I will fall back to quests I missed for money and rep gain when I’m bored.

I too am focused on family and work. I play when time allows and as much as I love wow and live it, with my Earl Gray in my WOW coffee mug, I still am focused on family. As far as quests go I have looked back at the achievments and see that in TBC I have done 0 quests in Zangramarsh. LOL skipped the whole thing, but am over 90 quests in ZulDrak.

I’ve kind of lost the interest in levelling at the moment, am 76 and actually enjoying the pvp at the minute. My gf is 80 but I’m sure I’ll get back to levelling when I’m ready.

Like some others saying here, I’m questing through most (if not all) content in a zone before moving on.  About 3/4 through Grizzly Hills and lvl 76.  In my guild, there are some 80’s; maybe 8-12 I think.  They even got a Realm First kill of Archavon!  (Go Scarlet Dawn!)  They are stressing for people to level to 80 to get into the raid content and most of the 80’s are willing to help where needed but I pretty much do it all solo.  I miss the heroics and will be leveling to 80 as quickly as I can muster between work, sleep, and trying not to burn myself out or anything.

I don’t know how, but with all of the work and crap I’ve had to do my death knight is already 80 with a titansteel destroyer and nearly def capped.

Do I play this game too much?

I personally haven’t really touched my 70’s yet… I’ve been leveling my DK. He’s currently at level 67 1/2 about, and he just started Terokkar. I won’t even hit Northrend until after I do most of Terokkar, probably the Nesingwary quests in Nagrand and Durn the Hungerer quest, then I’ll move on to Netherstorm and Shadowmoon Valley. By the time I finish both of those zones I’m sure I’ll be about level 72, then I’ll move on to Northrend =P.

I got my character to 80 last week, and have 3 professions maxxed at this point (one on an alt).  I work a full time job, which I took 1 day off from to play.  I’ve done every quest in every zone except about 40 in Storm Peaks, which I’m hoping to finish this week.  I’m married but don’t have kids and my husband was my leveling partner.

Other than the weekends, and one extra day over the holidays, I play about 3 hours a day, most of which has been taken up with dungeons.  Weekend days I usually do 2 or 3 dungeons and level for anywhere from 2 to 6 hours.

I don’t PVP, so there is no additional time spent for that.  I don’t feel like I have skipped content at all.  I like questing, and my husband and I have made an effective, efficient pair with little downtime.

Not having kids helps.  My cats aren’t nearly as demanding.
