Treadmill Race Across Azeroth

Posted 28th Aug 2008 03:58 PM by Maticus

A couple of guys thought they’d conduct an experiment to see how hard it was to run as long and hard as our characters in WoW have to. They hooked up a couple of treadmills to some wheels, then attached those to a machine which converts the wheel movements into forward pulses on the keyboard.

The guys, dressed up as female Night Elves complete with weapons, had to run from the Night Elf starting area Shadowglen to Darnassus, and they were pretty exhausted by the time they got there. Check it out for yourself below. Oh, and the video was sponsored by manapotions.com raspberry

That chap wasn’t just whistling Dixie, when he took into account the equipment worn by the characters, and then having to run.

But there’s one wee bit he didn’t think of, or maybe he thought it could be included under general equipment. Armour.

Try running 12 miles an hour, in a full suit of plate armour, carrying a shield and weapon, next to your regular supplies all stuffed into your backpack. *grins*

They wouldn’t even have made Darnassus in 10 minutes under those types of circumstances.

I actually have a full chain mail set - coif , hauberk and leggings. When wearing all 3 pieces including the gambeson etc. you really know about it, so I can only imagine what full plate must feel like.

And VA - did you take into account the various mounts most characters have in their backpacks too? wink

Baahh, the mounts are just a variation on figurines of wondrous power. Weigh a couple of pounds at most, depending upon the material it’s made from. One really shouldn’t notice them that much, not when compared to all the foodstuffs that a lot of adventurers tend to lug around with them. All those quails will weigh you down far more. :afro:

But armour, even highly enchanted ones. It’s still going to weigh you down. Even a set of Elven Full Plate will weigh in around the 25 pound mark, which granted is lighter than the regular chain mail set you mention which tend to come in around the 40 pound mark. Then again, I don’t think my counterparts in Azeroth have access to the type of Elven armour that I do.

They’re more likely to be tinkering around with Adamantine and that tends to be heavier, stronger granted, but a lot heavier. Add to this how dwarves make their armour and you’re looking at some uncomfortable weight ratio’s. Probably nearer the 70 pound mark. And that doesn’t include weaponry, shields and other gear.

Probably also explains why everyone is so ridiculously buff.
