Two-Handed Tanking For Other Classes?

Posted 13th Jan 2009 03:10 PM by Maticus

Ghostcrawler has said on the official forums that Blizzard can see a world where Fury and Arms Warriors could tank. He goes onto say that Druids and Paladins would be more tricky as they have healing options too. Basically, he said that Blizzard would like to get away from trees for defined roles, ie the tanking tree or DPS tree, and be more like the Death Knight, whereby each tree could be used for whichever role they wanted to play.

Read Ghostcrawler's full post below, continued after the break:

imageWe like the way the death knight's talent trees are shaping up. Specifically, you can tank using good builds from any of the three trees. One may be slightly higher than another at any given moment in time, but overall the goal is that they are very similar and they are certainly more similar than the other three tanking classes.

We can totally imagine a world in which Arms, Fury and Protection all can tank using different styles. The Prot tree would just be more about sword and board style than tanking per se. Perhaps an Arms warrior would tank with a two-hander more like a DK does. I'm not saying we will 100% for sure go down that road, but it is interesting idea to think about.

It's harder with druids and paladins because some of the other trees can heal or are ranged. (You could probably come up with a Ret tanking system). Being able to tank and heal effectively with

To some extent druids are always going to be about being able to fill very different roles. While a DK tank might have a Frost tanking build and Blood tanking build that she switches between, I don't know that you would see many druid tanks switching between Bear build #1 and Bear build #2. Some will, and that's cool. But I suspect a lot of them will swap from bear to cat or from bear to Resto.

I could easily see a Prot warrior who wants two different Prot tanking builds -- a high threat build vs. a high survivability build for example. I could see a Prot warrior who wants a Prot tanking build vs. a Prot off-tanking build or even a Prot PvP build.

But I don't think this feature automatically locks us into Prot = tanking and Arms / Fury = dps if we don't want it to be. There is a risk that it allows us to be lazy: "Oh don't worry about making Frost mages PvE viable because they can always swap specs to Fire or Arcane for PvE." We would still like to get away from X being "the PvP tree" for every class. Likewise we'd like to get away from having tanking trees too, but it's harder or perhaps impossible for some classes.

tko, I agree just the same as I think DKs were a worthless hybrid class to bring into the game. A DK in my guild was actually complaining about how they couldn’t tank as effectively with the blood tree as with the frost tree. As a prot warrior, I was tempted to boot him from our guild. heh

I want a healing tree for my warlock, that’s an even better idea lol. DoTs that drain life from the enemy and replenish my own while i funnel my own life to heal others just like i do for my demons. Kinda like the emerald drakes in Oculus.

I’m thinking that Blizzard is obviously testing the water about this idea by looking at our reactions. I’ll put it as simply as I can for you Blizz Its a stupid Idea! Right now talent tree’s are what define our characters and if you make the above changes you will completely change the game. Protection warriors that can dps? Whats next feral druids that can heal the group as well as tank? I have a level 80 resto shammy and I have actually dropped out of groups because of DK’s who think they can tank. Stop kidding yourselves Blizz DK’s make terrible tanks. If you allow prot spec toons the ability to dps you will only hurt yourselves in the long run Blizz as what will be the point in making alts?

i always had an idea in my mind that a tank should be able to tank diffrently (one hander and a shield or a two hander or w/e) and if it ballances out, you could tank in diffrent ways and still be a viable tank.
so if you fancied tanking with a great massive weapon wile stacking high armour you could, or if you wanted a shield.
it would add variety to the spec

death knights were a bad example to use here… about the only role a dk can’t play is healer, and even then, blood spec will still heal the dk himself… my point is: dk’s should never be used to set the standard for other classes, as they are every class in the game rolled into one.

on a side note, this is probably the dumbest thing i’ve ever heard. the trees are what makes the game an rpg. if you start blending trees to perform equally well in the same role, just tweaking rotations, then you’re taking away the tree’s ability to influence a gamer’s experience. next thing you know, blizz’ll be saying they need to change the focus of combat rogues to tanking and make mages able to heal!

DK’s make terrible tanks? Not that I’ve seen…

Many of the terrible players playing DK’s on the other hand; they make terrible tanks.
