Upcoming Feral changes

Posted 5th Nov 2008 04:23 PM by Maticus

Ghostcrawler gave Druids a heads up for some upcoming changes earlier, continues after the break:

[BLUE=“http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=12065155972&sid=1”]

ARMOR

We are changing the way bear armor works so that bonus armor on items does not receive the bear armor multiplier. Specifically this means that trinkets, rings, necks and cloaks with bonus armor will not be multiplied by the bear bonus. The normal armor on leather will still be multiplied by this bonus. We are also going to remove bonus armor from Feral staves. You’ll get your bonus armor from the leather you acquire.

Examples:
1) A ring that grants 100 bonus armor will now grant a bear 100 armor (not ~470 armor).
2) Leather legs with 253 armor will still grant a bear ~1190 armor (not 253 armor).
3) A feral staff will now grant 0 armor.[/BLUE]

Blizzard Quote:
We are making this change because armor is such a good stat for bears that it makes taking pieces with bonus armor a non-decision and we don’t want acquiring these pieces, which tend to not be common, to be so much of a barrier to a druid who wants to tank a raid.

This change will NOT be in effect when Lich King ships.

We are letting you know this now so that you don’t go through heroic efforts to acquire items like the Badge of Tenacity, or Defender’s Code. Defender’s Code, with 850 armor, will still be a good trinket. But it won’t be an insanely good trinket for a bear.

We will adjust the bear armor modifiers so that your net mitigation does NOT go down with these changes. Let me repeat: this is not a nerf to Feral armor. It is a change to the amount of armor you get from gear with bonus armor.

MANA

We are adding an effect to a deep Feral talent (something like Primal Tenacity) to further reduce the cost of shapeshifting into cat or bear by 50%. This talent will stack with Natural Shapeshifter for a total cost reduction of 80%. PvP-focused druids can get both talents to shift easily and often despite, no longer having Int on gear at level 80.

PROTECTOR OF THE PACK

We are removing the group requirements from this talent. The new tooltip will say: “Increases your attack power by X and reduces the damage you take in Bear Form and Dire Bear Form by Y.” The values of X and Y themselves are not changing.

Again, these changes will NOT be in Nov 13 for Lich King’s launch. We will add them in a patch that will come out sometime before the major Ulduar content patch. We’re letting you know now so that you can choose quest rewards and loot drops accordingly.

Although I’m a bit sad to see my massive amounts of armor go away, I’m glad to be able to compare my tanking stats with other tanks a little easier.  It’s been so hard to even start comparing how I bear tank to how friends pally or warrior tank.

If only I could get a bit more dodge on my mage tank… wink

I think they’re taking way too much of what a Bear Tank’s main stat is away. If they want to make it even, fine, but keep our armor at least 10% higher than theirs… If they’re at 25K armor, bears should be at 30K armor or so, possibly up to about 35K.

That’s exactly what they are doing. Adjusting your modifiers so your Net mitigation doesn’t change. As long as they do that this is only a big buff to Bear itemization.

In the meantime however, everything previously “known” goes right out the window. Armor multipliers, bonus armor itemization and—now—the effect of the multiplier on what little itemized armor there is left has/is/will be changing. Couple that with the new function of Agl conversion as we progress past 70 and we basically get to re-learn our entire tanking stat values. Nothing else in 3.x has been this utterly disorienting—healing gone to spell power? meh, simple conversion with little to no net effect. Enhancement picking up on Int and losing on Str? meh, that’s a shift in which items we choose not in the very make up of those items.

But on 3.x Day, my druid tank lost 7K armor due to itemization and multiplier changes; she gained 5% or so in dodge; and—currently—up to 12% damage redux from Protector. Which all adds up to a net change of ..... hell if I know because they also nerfed all the instances. So am I better? Or are the bosses just lame now? or have the healers gotten stronger? No way to know—hell you can’t even CHECK on how Protector affects you without actually being in a group with 4 other people. “Hey can you party up with me so I can run around and try to determine whether or not I’m still able to Tank stuff like I was yesterday because all my talents and half my gear has been scrambled around? Gee, thanks!

Everything I needed to know about the 3.x changes was made clear when I went to the druid tanking thread at ElitistJerks and the first post has been updated to essentially read “Everything we used to know is wrong now.”

Guess I’ll level dps toons like 95% of the rest of the server.

I like this change (I freaked out at first until I realized that either our armor would be the same or the amount of mitigation would be the same).

I didn’t like being forced to wear some items just because they gave armor.  Now I’ll have a little more freedom to choose.

waytofailself sums it up nicely… nothing really changing

Think about it ppl
on the one side you have bears losing armor at L80 because they use rogue leather
then you have PotP that compensates for the loss in mitigation
and on the other side “We will adjust the bear armor modifiers so that your net mitigation does NOT go down with these changes”—> they are actually buffing the amount of armor you’re gonna get from a rogue leather piece

sum?
might even be a buff
