What Happened to Riding Crop Attachment?

Posted 22nd Jul 2008 12:26 AM by Maticus

Several weeks ago, there was talk of replacing trinkets that buff mount speed, such as the [item type=“preload”]Riding Crop[/item], with an enchantment that could be applied to the mount itself permanently.

Bornakk commented on the progress of this idea earlier:

I remember reading some random patch note long ago that riding crop would be useable onto any mount you want and thus give it a permement 10% speed increase rather then the item being a trinket. Did this idea just kinda fade into dust or what.

This change is live in the beta right now actually.

And having its share of adjustment issues, at least if what I’m reading over in the beta forums is accurate. On one hand, not having to play swap the trinket (especially since 2.4.3 makes that more complicated) is a good thing, but on the other hand, I’m going to need more Riding Crops (not to mention something for druid flight form).

Yeah, pretty much. While it won’t be a terrible thing to require a few extra riding crops, (leatherworkers rejoice!), we are still working on seeing how it pans out and working on solutions for classes like Druids who have the casting ability for the mount form

What about Carrot on a Stick?

Assuming everything stays exactly as it is right now, it would also be changed to be a one-time castable item, like the Riding Crop and the Skybreaker Whip.

i would asume a riding crop and skybreaker whip are not stackable, but what about a riding crop and a carrot on a stick.

Currently the 10% increase to a mount’s speed is the limit (class talents aside).

Any chance that the riding crop can have a couple charges?

Since we are still beta testing, anything can change, but we don’t plan to add charges to them right now.[/blue]

I think the whole idea sux…

There are mods that will auto-swap trinkets (and other items) when you mount or dismount so there is no need to worry about manual swapping.

Changing the trinket into an enchantment means I will now need to buy a crop for each mount I use, and can not unequip it when I group with someone who does not have one..

With spurs, gloves (enchanted), carrot, and whip, a slow ground mount, fast ground mount, slow bird and fast bird; I could match my speed to almost anyone except maybe a Hunter who wasted talent points on Animal Handler, or a Paladin using Pursuit of Justice. When the carrot, crops and whips become enchantments, this will not be possible..

...And to pile insult on top of insult, I got rid of the "useless" riding crop for every character that earned a Skybreaker Whip.

Some players collect MiniPets, some collect mounts, some collect both…  Some players ignore their group mates and leave them eating their dust… Some don’t.

Would a good compromise be grandfathering the old items into the new system?

This kind of sucks, considering that they said it was going to be put into a patch. Now, it’s supposed to make it better that "Oh, it’s in WotlK."... No, that doesn’t make it better, that makes it worse, because now there’s a very low chance it’ll come before the expansion. Meh. Also, hello everyone =D.

Wow, Elsu, you did put a nice argument against "Riding Crop" enchanting: you won’t be able to match your speed "...to almost anyone except maybe a Hunter who wasted talent points on Animal Handler, or a Paladin using Pursuit of Justice."
You need nor spurs, nor enchant, nor carrot if you’re using Crop or Whip, just not stackable, dude. Enchants and carrot are for lower levels, forget about them since you hit 69 at least.
More than that: there are mount trinkets’ swapping addons, true. Have you tried leaping into the fray on your mount? You won’t be able to change your trinket when combat started, never forget that. Want example? Trash on the way to Akil’zon is the perfect one if you don’t want more guardians to come.
