World of Warcraft "Not a Success"?

Posted 10th Apr 2008 01:23 PM by Maticus

According to Craig Sherman, a speaker at the MI6 Marketing Conference in San Francisco, World of Warcraft is only doing a fraction of the business it should be doing.

Speakers at the conference were debating the future of MMOs, and in particular, the scope of free-to-play games. Apparently, there are 800 million teens worldwide that would like to play an MMO, but don’t have the means to pay a subscription - in other words, they don’t want to pay, can’t afford to pay, or don’t have a credit card.

Based on those figures, Sherman claims that World of Warcraft’s 10 million subscribers can hardly be seen as a success. “There are 800 million teens in the world. That’s not a success.” In his opinion, a 10% share of the the market could qualify.

Then what does that make Mr. Sherman’s own game, Gaia Online, with its 2.5 million non-subscribing players?

Well, it obviously is a success, because people don’t have to pay to play it.

That doesn’t necessarily reflect unfavourably on WoW.

There is only a portion of those 800 million teens who have a PC capable of gaming/internet, desire to play games and/or MMOs, expendable income to buy gamecards or parents who will let them invest the time. Whittle through all those factors Blizzard have no or little control over and I’m sure that 800 million looks very different.

On the other hand he’s pigeon holed WoW.  It’s appeal is broader than teens.

He’d do better to look at the demographic of WoW and to the population of those who game (any type of online play) and then assess if it’s a been a success.

What proportion of those who are able to play, do so?
