It's official: Wrath of the Lich King has broken the record for the fastest selling PC game of all time! WoW's latest expansion sold 2.8 million copies in the first 24 hours of release, the previous holder of the record was another WoW product, The Burning Crusade, which sold 2.4 million in the same time period.

Now we wait and see it they manages to sell the predicted 5 million in the first month. Here's the press release, more after the break:

IRVINE, Calif., Nov 20, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft(R)'s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King(TM), has sold more than 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability*, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time. This eclipses the previous record of nearly 2.4 million copies sold in 24 hours, set in January 2007 by Blizzard's first World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade(R). Wrath of the Lich King was simultaneously released in North America, Europe, Chile, Argentina, and Russia on November 13; Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand on November 14; and South Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on November 18.

In celebration of the launch, more than 15,000 stores throughout the world had their doors open at midnight to welcome thousands of expectant players. Several of these locations were attended by Blizzard Entertainment representatives, who met players and signed copies of the game.
"We're grateful for the incredible support that players around the world have continued to show for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Wrath of the Lich King contains some of the best content we've created for the game so far, and we look forward to seeing even more players log in to experience it in the days ahead."

"After a single day of availability, Wrath of the Lich King is already the bestselling PC game of 2008 at GameStop and ranks as one of our top-selling products so far this year," said Bob McKenzie, GameStop's senior vice president of merchandising. "In keeping with the tradition established by their previous releases, Blizzard Entertainment has again created a product that not only reflects their high standards of quality but is clearly an instant hit with gamers around the country."

Prior to the launch of Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft's subscriber population had grown to more than 11 million players, further strengthening its position as the world's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game. But WoW is dying - how can this be!? (the thoughts of all the people who left WoW for WAR)

Yeah, well.  So, the game is vibrant, healthy, and still growing.  Talk about crazy…

So basically in 24 hours, Wrath of the Lich King sold 3.5 times the amount of WAR’s total subscribers. Pwned.

Sorry, that’s just my gut reaction after all the smug comments from WAR developers and everyone who said WAR would kill off WoW raspberry

I know the war is far from over, but the first battle has gone to WoW I think.

Just because WoW sells more doesn’t make it a better game. WoW came around when there wasn’t much in the mmorpg industry and at that time what games were available weren’t very hard to beat. WoW grabbed all the subscribers it could with no competition for a very long time and once a game has established those dedicated subscribers it’s almost impossible to take them away. This is why WoW is currently “unbeatable” subscriber-wise. In my honest opinion WAR offers a great deal of things that WoW is missing or at least has been missing since WotLK stole some of those things, but nevertheless I think the only thing standing in the way of WAR becomming as successful as it should be is the fact that no one wants to leave WoW, no one wants to leave what they worked hard for, their friends, their guild. I honestly believe that if someone new to WoW played WAR they would choose WAR since I believe it is better and they don’t have that connection to WoW that everyone else has.

So I’ll say it again, sales don’t mean it’s a better game. WoW just came at the right time and since then has done enough to keep it’s subscribers happy and connected, that is all. I played WAR and loved it, but came back to WoW since none of my friends wanted to try it… I really wasn’t looking forward to 10 more levels of the same crap in WotLK, but I would much rather do that than be without my friends in a different game.

What game is better is a matter of opinion, but you are right that people tend to stay with what they have and like rather than something new. I don't think the bragging from WAR developers that they were going to kick WoW's ass helped them though...

Maticus, you come up with some of the funniest things to say sometimes.

Since i haven’t (don’t want to fork out the money to buy) tried WAR, i don’t have much to say about them.

I do think that most ppl do stay for the reason TKO said. i personally am still around cuz WoW is the first online game i played that has such a rich back story and the mini stories in game are alot of fun to get into.

With regards to WAR: I really WANTED to try the game.  Why didn’t i try the game?  Because the devs were such jerk-wads about their competition with WOW.  They could have promoted their game and said it was amazing without being jerks.  It irritated me to the point where I refused to even try the game.

With regards to when WOW first launched: WOW did NOT just pick up the subscribers from other games.  WOW basically made the entire genre.  Just look at the MMORPG statistics before and after the launch of WOW.  In 2004 before WOW came out, there were about 6.5 million MMORPG players world wide (the majority of those people were playing L1 and L2).  Today there are about 16 million people playing MMORPGs and 11 million of those people play WOW (I’m aware that not 100% of those 11 million are individual people due to duplicates, but that 16 million also has duplicates).  Within a year of the launch of WOW, the MMORPG market was up to 13 million subscribers.  The market doubled within a year of WOW’s release.  That is no coincidence.  I’m not saying this makes WOW a good game.  However what these statistics should tell you is that WOW is extremely important and influential in the world of MMORPGs.  Without WOW, the MMORPG market would not be anything like what it is today.  All I’m saying is, have respect for what Blizzard has done for this market.

I will certainly agree that it is almost impossible to pull players out of WOW at this point.  As other people have mentioned, it’s more fun to play with your friends/family/guild than without them.  Even if that means playing a game you enjoy less.

As a side note, it’s most likely the fact that the game is made by Blizzard that has brought in so many new people to the MMORPG market.

Stop the crap about ‘WoW having no competition at the start’, it’s total bullsh*t. In 2004 there were many massive online games, just not looking the way WoW does. Blizzard has not design the genre, it has re-design it, sacrificing MUCH for one thing, but the most important thing:

PLAYABILITY.

That’s the hard truth, and while WAR brings many new tricks, and fixes many WoW issues, it’s just not even 10% that enjoyable. Sad but true.
