Anyone got a fileplanet subscription?
Jegeren_Skygge
27-08-2004, 07:19 AM
Nice to know you can only get in if you subscribe, even though it gives you the option twice to sign up without subscribing, then the last page says sorry, you have to subscribe. So in essence you have to pay to play and you only get 7 days.
It told me to wait a few days before I can sign up, since its open to Fileplanet subscribers only right now.
Sometimes, I really hate Fileplanet.

Like hell that I am going to sign up for fileplanet to be in that stresstest, bad move of Blizzard imo to have made this deal with them.

Yes, please be aware that it is ONLY for SEVEN days, so if you subscribe just to play a game for 7 days, it might not be worth it, depending on your perspective.
Also a stress test is exactly that... stressing the server, so it must be mentioned that there will also be some sort of accompanied downtime and server lag.
Another point to note, they did not mention whether the 7 days includes the 3 gb download time (many people spend days and days to download it), 2 gb for the initial file, then 750 mb patch, then another 250 mb patch.
Right now from my understanding its subscriber only. But it said it will open up to anyone with a Fileplanet account (which is free) in a few days. And your stupid if you pay for a FP subscription just for this.

In order to evaluate World of Warcraft's account-creation process and server performance under heavy loads, Blizzard will be conducting a seven-day stress test beta in the days ahead. This test will require over 100,000 players to download the World of Warcraft stress test beta client, create an account, and log on to play when the test goes live!
To make the client available for download to such a large audience, we have partnered with FilePlanet, GameSpy's Web-based file-delivery service. Click here to learn more about the World of Warcraft stress test beta and to sign up for a chance to participate in this special event.

Apparently, you can get the beta just by paying $7.90 for subscriber fees to fileplanet.
Xinhuan put it a good way... $7.90 for seven days. It's up to yourself if it's worth it or not. Personally I'm kinda tempted cause $7.90 is just a dinner meal but I'm going to be moving in the next couple of days and all through next week I'll be without internet so if the stress test happens to be around then, I'll be out of luck.
HOWEVER, it seems that when you sign up now, Blizzard will email you with your key and a link to download the client already so chances are if you sign up before it starts, you'll have your client already and ready to play.

I will definitly NOT pay in order to test a game for a company. They already have plenty of money, sorry thanks  .
Plus, i hate fileplanet with all its advertising, and its little "tricks", like "oh yeah click again, eh no only subscrivers" and "ohohoh we hide the link for FREE service in a dark little place ohoho". I dont like when someone call me so obviously "little stupid consumer".
And to conclude, i'm happy to wait for the euro beta or the game going gold because i really dont want to screw my "gaming experience" with such a great MMORPG playing it in such bad conditions (bugs, lag, crash..).
* go back waiting for the 1 chance on a billion to be taken in the beta  eh, a man said the one chances on a billion always work   *

Probably be another week before the stress test servers actually open up...

Huh? Cool. Maybe my subscription is worth something after all. Only 7 hours left on the download. But these hours seem to pass in like 5 minutes ... Stupid DL client.
Way I read it, it only lets you in during the 7 day stress test period. Not in the actual closed beta. Wich makes sense, 100K leet dewds flooding the beta would pretty much be the end of the world, uhm, of warcraft.
No date on the stress test tho', only "An announcement will be made when the Stress Test goes live". Best guess is sometime in November.

The idea was never for people to sign up to Fileplanet(with the fee) for the sole intention of playing WOW. Blizzard has to use fileplanet because of Blizzards limited bandwidth, can you imagine 100,000 people downloading 3gb's for the blizzard downloader, thats a funny thought. So they are just giving a perk to people who have a subscription to Fileplanet. those subscribed to Fileplanet will get to play WOW, no question.(my brother just installed it, we can see the loading screen, but it says we are waiting to create an account.) anyways for those who sing up but dont pay the monthly Fileplanet fee will sign up and be drawn i guess at random.( thats the way i udnerstand it correct me if im wrong.)

Good thing i can log into the actual beta anytime i want and play for as long as i want with no limit or fee or anything. Yes i know your all crying now, except my fellow actual beta testers. Go ahead and try the fileplanet thing if your desperate enough, i know i would of found a way to play this even for seven days if i hadnt gotten into the beta. If your gonna go for the stresstest be prepared for massive lag and crashes constantly, with only 7 days to play, you have no right to complain if it ends up being terrible. Keep in mind that there will be a real open beta in a few months anyway, that should be much longer and a more enjoyable experience.

yeah please don't judge the game on this either, think about all the jerks from FP that's just gonna get this to get it, and with the server instability (and remember this is still a beta so it won't be perfect either way) it won't be that enjoyable.
Best of luck to everyone :)

Haha maybe not enjoyable for a beta tester who has open acces to the game but for someone like me who hasn't even touched it since the WOW friends and family alpha hack days it will be incredible no matter how bad the play quality is.

The actual beta is currently better than any finished MMORPG i've ever played, just don't expect the stresstest to compare to what us beta testers experience.
Anyways the reason Blizzard can't use bittorrent this time around is that people still have to download the downloader from them, and even though it's a very small file i have no doubt that 100,000+ downloaders would **** any normal server. Despite what alot of people say theres nothing else out there that can possibly compare to the greatness of bittorrent when it comes to file distribution, absolutely nothing.

Would I pay 8 bucks to be in a stress test? hell no. Now if they guaranteed spots in the open beta that would be a different thing entirely. I really hope the WoW open beta is like 2 weeks. That's just enough time really to tell if you like the game or not. I might have said yes 3-4 months ago but Fable, Kingdom under fire and Star Wars Battlefront all come out next month. Those three will keep me busy until WoW ships.
I signed up with Fileplanet. I hate waiting in those lines and I use fileplanet about once a month--so not much of a lose for me. Besides, I missed my chance to sign up for the beta (was a week too late ; ; ) so I know I wont be getting an e-mail saying I've been accepted anytime.
I don't care if the stress test is horrible (because I know it will be). I just want the client so I can play around with the files and keep the client updated for open beta so I can just log in; whenever that starts in the next 3 months.
Edit: Oh, and if the BT file would be around the average size of 13.4 kb, 100,000 downloaders would eat up 1.34 Gigs of bandwidth--or something around that high.

Well, like previously stated, its fileplanet subscription. Not WoW pay2play.
I already had a subscription, a subscription I considered a bad purchase until it now offered me a chance to at least see the game up and running on my computer.
You might say "Oh but the open beta is just months away", some of the people here have been waiting for this game for like 4 years now. 8 bucks to get to play as soon as possible, if just for a little while on a laggy server, is nothing. NOTHING.
8 bucks is just spare change to most people anyway. Why all the "WARNING" posts? Its not like anyone is spening their rent money on this.

Is there any reason people can't just get the file from an alternative location? Such as from a friend or a bittorrent site like suprnova? Or do you need access to fileplanet for the reg code too? I'm just thinking you guys should look into other possabilities before throwing away money if it's just for the stress test, it's what i would do if i couldnt already play the game whenever i wanted(i just started a tauren hunter about an hour ago by the way, i'm at level 3 now). Of course if i couldnt find another way THEN i'd pay.

If you didn't HAVE to go to FilePlanet for the key I wouldn't be so mad. Everyone defending Blizz says that this is so they don't have to do a torrent. That is BS since you can't use a copy from a friend or something.
On the other hand, I bet this makes it easier for people to pirate.

Well lots of people, myself included up until i got accepted into the official beta, have been exploring the world of warcraft on the leaked alpha/beta. I've been doing it since January, there was a sandbox available that allowed players to explore the world and then there was barely functional server made so groups could explore, nothing else worked and there werent any NPCs or mobs but it was insanely fun to set my speed to like 40 and race around the entire world of warcraft. I've seen parts of the world that most other beta testers havnt seen, those guardians of blizzard are tough.
I have no doubt someone will have a partly functional sandbox or server out for the stresstest client before the 7 days are up, there might not be any content but it's better than nothing.

I'm a FilePlanet subscriber, I subscribed when the Dawn of War beta came out.

Except Bliz uses bittorrent....so the only BW they would be using would be for people to download the downloader. (the thing that starts up the WoW download).
Okay, I can see people are confused about some things. First off on how bittorrent and similar systems work. Yes, BT saves Blizz a lot of bandwidth/capacity, but they have to seed the file first. Otherwise, how would the first people get the file? It's just more practical for File Planet to distribute the file than Blizzard.
Second, you aren't paying to get in. You are paying for FilePlanet's services, which entitle you to a spot in the stress test. There is a very big difference. Claiming they are charging you $8 to play the stress test is like claiming restaurants charge you $50 for the mint you get at the end. Granted, some people will sign up for FilePlanet solely because of this promotion, just as some people may actually order a full meal simply to get the mint, but that's their choice. Current FP subscribers do not pay any additional costs to play the stress test, so it's very hard to claim anyone is charging for the stress test.
Now if they guaranteed spots in the open beta that would be a different thing entirely.
I'm not sure you understand what an open beta is. Anyone who wants to play the open beta is allowed to. As opposed to a closed beta (which is what's currently going on), where only a few select people can play.
Lastly, for those of you who don't want to go for this promotion. Remember, it's 7 days only, for a stress test. I wouldn't be surprised if the open beta started as soon as the stress test were done. Think of this as a cross promotion. Get people interested in WoW, get people to subscribe to FilePlanet. This is not your last, best chance to play WoW (That would be the open beta).
Just my whole little speculation thing here...but um...maybe they are just doing the stress test--since um--didn't they recently announce a hosting agreement with AT&T (I have linky :p)? And they just want to test out the new servers? :x
I don't think open beta will come right after this--maybe a month after at the earliest.

Wouldn't it be fair if every one had the same chances to get in, not just the ones who subscribe to fileplanet. I mean the subscribers are paying to get the beta client sooner. Some people can get the files off friends, bittorrent (not blizzard's).
Now they made us all to pay. I repeat. I want to stress test the beta. I don't want file planet's download. So why do I get lower chances? On the other hand it's clever by Blizzard to make cash while getting their software tested...

You missed reading the rest of the posts. Blizzard has not made a cent off of WoW, and they wont untill release. The money for the subscription goes to fileplanet which gives you discounts on games and extra goodies. This is merely a promotion for subscribing to fileplanet services as part of the partnership between the two. It is a wise marketing plan between them, fileplanet gets more subscribers while Blizzard gets a reliable high output file server they dont have to pay for, and the stresstest will commence. Smart and dedicated to their partners.
And remember, Blizzard is still testing their bittorrent, so it is still buggy and unreliable. They will not put important files up with BT untill they have the system working 100%

Anyone interested in getting an advance look at World of Warcraft can now sign up for a chance to participate in the upcoming World of Warcraft stress test beta! While thousands of test slots were snatched up by FilePlanet subscribers during the priority-access period earlier this week, thousands more remain available. However, potential testers must sign up quickly, because the remaining test slots will be distributed on a first come, first served basis until they’ve all been claimed.
The stress test beta, which will start soon after all 100,000+ test slots have been assigned, will help Blizzard evaluate World of Warcraft’s account-creation process and server performance under heavy loads. This seven-day test will be separate from the ongoing World of Warcraft closed beta test, but stress testers will have access to all of the game content that closed-beta testers are currently playing. Be careful though, if you're using Hotmail. If you've got your Hotmail junk mail filter set to "enhanced," it may filter your acceptance e-mail as junk. It did for me, at least.

As for anyone flaming people paying for fileplanet, who are you to tell someone how they should spend their money? If someone wants to pay for a service, that's their own damned business--learn to mind your own... that's really childish.
As for the whole "you have to subscribe" no you don't. I filled out the open stress test form today and was accepted instantly... maybe they're making x amount instantly accept and y amount be put on waiting lists...
Good luck to everyone on the waiting list =D I'll hope to see you guys in-game, even if it is laggy

Now they made us all to pay. I repeat. I want to stress test the beta. I don't want file planet's download. So why do I get lower chances? On the other hand it's clever by Blizzard to make cash while getting their software tested...
The capitalist pigs of America are making me work. I repeat. I want a lot of money. I don't want to work. So why should I have a lower income? On the other hand, it's pretty clever of the capitalist pigs to trick people into working.
Life isn't fair, deal with it. And the Blizzard isn't charging anything.

Im 95% sure everyone on waiting list will be let in.. this thing isnt going to start untill 100,000+ people apply, and that number is a little high-- Imo only a small percentage wont be let in from the waiting list

I have none of these problems!
Maybe it's because I am in Europe and the silly website knows =(. No key for me.
One word: proxy-server. Oh wait, does that count as two words? Hmm, nevermind. Anyways - if you need a working, free proxy with North American IP - PM me :)

Its sad, in the battle.net forums the kiddies are screaming 'Blizzard has become just like SOE!' over this. Its hilarious.
Well, what did you expect? Only 10% at most of the people who post on the b.net forums have any intelligence worth mentioning. The rest are idiots and trolls :uhhuh:

It will display ??? for the whole download. It's 2.2gb.
If when you try and extract it it says it's corrupt, use winZIP and not winrar.
Lol, it did display ??? for most of the download until the end, when I was evidently d/l at -350 KB/sec =P. It also said that I had about -2,004,000 KB out of -1,840,000 KB downloaded so far, and it was counting down (although it would be up since they're negative).
It took forever to unzip the files, then another forever to install the program (~10 - 20 minutes each). But I finally made it to the login screen which is very pretty and I think i'll use it as my screensaver.
Now the question is how soon is the soon in "The stress test beta, which will start soon after all 100,000+ test slots have been assigned..."

Got into the free stress test myself but when I click on the link to enter the key I can't see the image that has the code in it. I sent an email to fileplanet and have been waiting for a response (after of course making sure my blockers and firewalls weren't stopping it from showing.) Anyone else have this problem? And if so, how did you remedy it?

29-08-2004, 07:56 AM
Well I paid the money to d/l this stress test beta, it's only 8 dollars so I think it's worth it. Not just for the beta that is, for fileplanet=). Anyway I've downloaded it twice already, having some problems extracting the file...doing it a third time...hope it works. *crosses fingers*
Edit: DOH! I just read the post above mine, TY I'll use winzip not winrar

With FP you can resume failed downloads without waiting in line again, if you resume within 24 or 48 hours of the initial download.

Lots and lots of posts about FP this blizzard that a lot of complaining, but most of you (a couple did eventually) actually read the little FAQ thing that fileplanet had or you'd know it was FIRST COME FIRST SERVED as in devoted fans who read stuff and check the site (or just happen to be lucky) got in for free.
I didn't want to take even the slightest chance (like it opens when I was sleeping and fills up before I wake up) so I paid for my account and I'm grateful they gave me the opportunity to.
This luck crap pisses me off (refering to the regular closed beta) 'cause I never win anything in random drawings ever. And a lot of not so high calibur people (to put it nicely) get into the beta and they just signed up cause it was a "free game".
I also downloaded it at 3-4 megs a second. I love cable modems =). Fastest download speeds I've ever seen (besides lan/router).
People think "omg its money for a beta thats so dumb", they don't think what it takes to get a measily $7.90 and that something so small might actually be worth it.
Hmm 8 Candy Bars or 7 days of WoW even on a laggy/down half the time server with a buncha jerks (not that they will all be jerks!). I'll take WoW. Now you might say no one buys 8 candy bars but you will buy at least that in your lifetime if you haven't already.
People also act like its so easy to get into WoW or something. If its so easy give me a freakin account seriously. Yeah thats what I thought :grrr:
Sorry for the rant, but some people were making me mad. Me now:

I would like to be the first to begin a policy of discrimination towards stress testers, these wannabe beta testers are clearly inferior to us, and we must forever mock their crappy super laggy server that will only exist for 7 days. Keep in mind that all stress testers are 2nd rate citizens and should not be allowed to have civil rights. Might i suggest that we also begin racial cleansing against the stress testers. My fellow beta testers it is your duty to oppress the stress testers at every opportunity!
Just kidding. :)

For the guy who posted that he couldn't see the image with the input code on it... you need to be using the latest version of Internet Explorer. I tried with Firefox at first and it didn't work for me either. Only drawback about Firefox, IMO.
Anyway, I got in! I just hope I don't get a virus or something in the next while before beta starts. It would really suck to have to format your harddrive after downloading the entire file.
Anyway, I currently have 13 minutes remaining in the download queue... I hope the actual dl doesn't take too long... Oo

It'll be active when the 100,000 signup spots are filled.
Note: that probably won't be for another few days or so, a few hours ago http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/144890.shtml had download numbers and it was somewhere around 42,000 (that counter has been taken off that page for some reason).

Yeah, it feels so good to at least get one step closer to actually playing the game, every little bit of it shines in my eyes like a gift from the gods. I'm so pumped about it I was declaring WoW the greatest game in history throughout the universe by the time I saw the shortcut icon. :)

Nice to know you can only get in if you subscribe, even though it gives you the option twice to sign up without subscribing, then the last page says sorry, you have to subscribe. So in essence you have to pay to play and you only get 7 days.
You can download it from a pub;ic server on FP and thats free to registers. I got it and did not pay anything.
