View Full Version : Small Beta Contest

Hi there! :howdy:
The Church (http://theudc.com/) is going to be holding a small beta contest to give away the extra Beta CD Keys that we received. However, we have no clue what kind of contest to have. Art contest, comic contest, story contest, best-looking pet turtle contest--we just can't decide. So, I thought I'd ask 'The People' what they thought would be a fair contest. Please post your thoughts here so that I can get a good consensus of what's best. :D
Also, if you're a beta tester who received an extra email and would like to donate it to our contest, we'd love to give it away for you. The more keys we have, the more options we'll have in the contest.
-Arkh Mori
NOTE: Please do not message me, email me, or IM me about how badly you need WoW. A contest does not mean 'you get for free' it means 'you compete and maybe you win,' sorry. I'm not going to be giving it to you without you winning the contest, and you won't convince me.

How's about having someone design a mascot for "The Church" - everyone benefits :) - coolest idea wins (could be required to include a drawing or something).
Best role-played introduction of the character they wish to play might be cool too - you'd get some funny submissions, probably some stuff that you could post on the site...
That's all I got for now - I'll mention more later if I think of anything else.

Thats actually a very good idea.
Drawing or designing or whatever tend to weed out alot of us less talented people. Especially all us poor betaless people who have trembling hands and ticks from the withdrawals from having the stress test taken away.
But anyone can think up a good story.
Maybe a backstory, how your character came to be. What brought your character to the point where he starts his training to be a hero in WoW.

Perhaps a quiz about warcraft lore?
Or a short story about anything as long as its fitting to the warcraft lore?
(Of course i chose stuff where im good at lol)
edit: didnt read above im for the char introduction too :)

Thought maybe it could be in audio too - you could send an intro, then introduce yourself "in person". Just some character stuff - with the "less talented" (though creative) members of the community in mind. I mean, I can draw a little, write a little, and that kind of thing, but many of the people on here really excel in creative, entertaining dialogue. I think it plays to the strengths of regular forum posters :)

Another though I had was to have a character naming contest, in honor of the newly updated naming rules. Something about the coolest, most appropriate name (only one could be submitted per person or something). This would be hard to judge, but could result in some cool ideas for names...
Another fun one would be a WoW screenshot captioning contest, using some strange screenshot from somewhere. Those are usually entertaining, and pretty much right up the alley of most posters on this forum.
Anyways, I'll post more later if I think of them...

If you are not looking necessarily for the best-of-the-best, this would, in my mind, be a good option. It does not require huge amounts of skill in order to look up the necessary facts.
Some kind of short story would be good, otherwise. Writing is a truly noble artform, and is one of the few contests that has not been seen yet in the long run of the beta.
(And writing is my only talent. Take pity. :()

To be honest...I think the best way you can do this, is to just give that account to a friend. Holding a contest only creates conflict and accusation of favors. I've tried out contests before and most of them ended with the website being hated. Would I like to try my luck in yet another one and pray that I win? Sure ! And believe me I am desperate for WoW. But I think it's better if you guys just keep it private so noone would get mad for nothing.
edit: so lucky you guys got extras tho =[

One option would be to just do a random drawing from the interested parties on a site like this. Or something like the story contest, etc.
Or you could go back to the stress test and do a drawing from the people that almost won ;).

This may or may not be a good idea depending on whether the participant was in the stress test or not. Have a contest where those of us who were in the stress test recount our oddest, funnest and most exciting experience(s) in the stress test with a particular character. Most interesting ones win.

Just a suggestion. Please dont make it just one contest. If you have more than one key to give out, please do a few different contests. Not all of us can draw, not all of us can write etc...
Say you have 3 keys to give, do 3 different contests, fan art, story, comic or something like that.
Give everyone a shot :)

But seriously, the most fair way to give out the accounts would be to pick some random, none-beta testers here on the forum! The ideas about a writing contest, fan art contest, those are good ideas but that would leave ppl, like me, no chans of winning an account! I'm not good at those things like drawing or writing novels, but i think that i and others that are just like me, deserve a fair chans to!

I think it will be difficult to do a contest that will please everyone.
I agree that not everyone can write or draw or be artistic. of course in the end you don't want to get everyone all riled up when you are only trying to do a good deed.
I don't know how popular this idea will be....but it will sorta give everyone an equal chance...writers, non-writers, artists and even those artistically challenged.
How about selling a lottery ticket for the beta keys ($5.00) per tickets and the money raised can go to charity of the Church's choice or something along that line (of course I dont' know what Blizzard's rule will be about this since it will involve money).
Then again...there will always be disgruntled people (non-winners) no matter what contest it is.
I do applaud you guys for being so generous....afterall you could just list them on ebay and pocket the money yourself.

While there may be some lee-way in giving extra beta keys away (I've yet to actually see where Blizzard made it know that it was ok, but people seem to more and more say they did allow the giving away of extra keys), Im fairly certian Blizzard still prohibits the selling or otherwise raising of capital by means of their property which is listed in the EULA.
Unfortunatly, even selling Lottery tickets for a chance to get a beta key would be seen as selling the beta key itself, which is a no-no.
That and I don't think it would be fair, not everyone who wants to play would be willing to send in money.
Otherwise a good idea, perhaps a simple drawing, everyone puts there name and email in a PM to the host of the contest and he/she picks them at random. Maybe he/she has to write them down and put them in a hat for randomness sake.

How about a contest about why each person deserves the key?
Personally...
1. Unemployed Computer Engineering college grad, so I really have nothing better to do. Can't get a tech job but also can't get any other regular jobs because i'm "Over qualified."
2. No Job means I'm Poor, so my chances of playing retail in my current situation aren't that high. Though after getting hooked on the stress test, I might have to trade meals for a game subscription.
I know, I know... someone play the violin. Every one has a sob story. Well, this is mine.
Varrik
26-09-2004, 10:31 PM
while yes, everyone has a sob story, its more to the point that if it were a "why I deserve" contest, its entirely based upon opinions, and people may make some very ... interesting ... things up
I think I would prefer another random drawing rather than an essay contest.
But thats just me.

Make 5-10 trivia questions, and then all the people who answer them correctly get entered into a drawing.
It is a good idea in theory; however, in the end everyone will just "Google" the answers and the contest will be the same as if it was a random drawing.
Run back over old forum posts, and pick somone you dont know that well, who has been active in the community and is generally respected. Inform them with a PM, and ask them to keep quiet about winning. It removes the randomness of it, and in a way your playing favorites, but it also removes the disgruntled people and friction at the end.
The most fair way to go about it however is just a random drawning; however, there are always going to be people pissed off at you in the end.

I actually thought of this funky idea... what about making it so that you get a short character description and then you can basicly take it whatever direction you want... either make a story for the character...or maybe a d&d sort of sheet... or make a drawing/painting of the character... endless possibillities! And then perhaps make it so you can only do one thing, so it will require some skill, but still be within the persons on limits?

I agree on Booms idea too.. plain and simple :) Sure, everyone can look up lore questions, but "random drawing"-competitions are all like that. A small effort, and you're in the drawing.

I would really like the opportunity to join beta, and am excited about the contest, but I also want to compliment you and your guild for your generosity.
As for what should be done, a random drawing of people that make a post in a contest thread within a specific timeframe, or, just see if you can find the active membership of this forum that is not in the beta, and throw all the names in a hat. Seems simplest for all involved, and doesn't require trivia questions that people can probably just look up anyway. Plus there's no subjective parsing of what counts as a "correct" answer. Just my 2 cents. :)

I was the first to reply. Thats kinda like 'winning'. :innocent:
I still think a story is the best way to go. It makes people put some effort in and be creative and earn the win. Of course, this means hosting a contest will be alot of work.
But if it's supposed to be entirely fair, I agree that a random drawing would be best.
Or you could look at the join dates of active betaless posters and choose from that. People who have been in this forum for years and still dont have the beta should have earned something for their suffering.
Ofcourse then the apocalyptic forum wipe of '03 ruins it for those who have been here for since the very beginning. Just mentioning it as that screws me over bigtime.

I would agree with this comment. For those that don't have the talents to compete in an art/writing/other contest it would be nice to get an equal shot. The one thing we all share is a great desire to play WoW and a random drawing would give everyone an even chance. In the end, of course, it is up to the one giving out the prize how it will be decided but these are my thoughts on the matter.

I, a guild master, have difficulty relaying information to my team on WoW. I have played the stress test, and am still going crazy about it's ending, even 2 weeks after it has ended, and am just bored.

Also maybe:
A contest involving a tractor, 5 hearrings, and a bottle of glue, or maybee a contest in which the people that submit the funniest photos win, or possibly the first group of people to submit to you a picture of themselves in an Orc Grunt costume holding up a copy of the days newspaper.....

I like that idea, the person who wins is then very lucky, but at least those that didn't win still get something.
The best so far, in my opinion, is pseudo-random, random but somewhat influenced by what they say they'll do for the community with the account, I don't know the precise Algorithm to determine this but maybee something like:
Random number 1-100 for each person, add the following numbers, or similar:
Hosting a cam- 100 (maybee a bit too much, but many people love the live cams, maybee 75 is better)
Making videos- 50
Writing journals- 25
Allowing those who did not win to determine his character build- 100
Submitting screenshots regularly- 10
Compiling Information on a specific aspect of the game(since so many parts of the site are old)- 50
Coming up with this idea- 435
Of course numbers and categories can be adjusted by those who administer the contest, this makes it random, yet also ensures that somebody that will do good for the community gets a spot.

Also include a copy of the rules from this post in your email to signify that you have read, understood, and accept them.
Will we be disqualified if we have not done this? As far as I know, my submission is within the ruleset, otherwise.

I don't know. A fan art contest would be kinda nice but then on the other hand some people wouldn't be able to join in on that one.

Well, I can only hope the contest is fair. Such as ..say a nice picture vs. a not too well written, but deeply moving and touching essay....which can easily result in the pic winning :p

Well, with the deadline approaching/past, I'll describe my submission - which was a short, 4-frame cartoon.
"Imagine, if you will, a small living room. A small desk in the corner, and a bald, paunchy man hunkered over the keyboard of a 2 year old Dell computer - glazed eyes viewing an unsympathetic Log-on screen. The melodic sounds of the World of Warcraft theme echo from the stereo speakers as his 24 year old daughter glares at the back of her father's heah."
[frame 1] Daughter: "DAD! The Stress Test has been over for Three Weeks! Get OFF!"
[frame 2] Dad: "But, but ... Auberdine is being attacked! I must kill Orcs! ...
[frame 3] Daughter: "But you can't log in. You've been playing that stupid Splash music 24/7!"
[frame 4] Dad: "I, I have to feed Walter, my pet. If I don't feed him, he won't love me. He'll run away!" ...
<---- Left on the Cutting Room Floor ----->
Daughter: "If you want to play, go play D2X!"
Dad (Homer Simpson drone): "Must have WoW. MUST HAVE WoW ......"
How many of you can say this doesn't happen.... Good luck in the contest.

didnt realise the competition had already started.. is their time to join?
a good idea for a competition i think would be to design an instanced dungeon for WoW. either write about it, draw some diagrams or pictures, and give information on the events and bosses/mobs you will encounter. too latye, npw but it could be cool to do this sometime.. what do you think?

Sorry to burst your bubble : ( ..... but that entry didn't fit the guidelines. It had to be about what we thought the FUTURE held in the World of Warcraft (Azeroth)

Congrats to those who were 'gifted'. Tell us who you were.

I didn't apply since I don't feel it right to make people jump through hoops and beg to get something that wasn't deserved to be dished out in the first place. This whole closed beta has been nothing more than a popularity contest and by Blizzard's latest screw-up giving out multiple keys to people who already had them and telling them to give them to friends is another example of this. I suppose it's more egalitarian to requests tricks from those of us less fortunately for the .00001% chance to obtain one beta key.

Would you rather I had given it to a friend? I could still do that, you realize. Would that 'appease' you, Mr Oberon, sir?
I did this not to gain anything (much) but because I didn't know any 'fair' way to give it out. I expected few replies.
You'll also note that my original post didn't even state that I was actually having a contest. Just that I was thinking about one, and was curious about what to do. I had _so much_ response, I felt bad not doing it.

no need to be so cocky just cause you've got the key

A simple random drawing would have been sufficient. Getting people to do tricks and beg for it is tacky.

Blizzard's awfully tacky. Ought to take them out and beat them for that comic contest.
