View Full Version : Euro beta starts!

The European Closed Beta Test of World of Warcraft starts today and European gamers will be able to test the very latest version of the game, which includes the latest content and updates, following the push yesterday in North America and Korea. Moving forward, Beta Testers in Europe, North American and Korea will have access to the same content as future pushes will occur simultaneously in all territories.
The European Beta Test will initially offer the English language version, and in due course the French and German language versions will be introduced to the testing process.
The game will be tested in multiple phases and the first phase of Beta Testers is currently being notified by e-mail. This notification process will continue daily over the next few days. Thereafter, additional testers will be included each time a new phase begins and they will be notified by e-mail accordingly at the time. We intend to do our utmost to include as many players as possible from the pool of those who signed up to join the European Closed Beta Test.
We would like to thank again everyone who has signed up and wish you all the very best of luck in being selected.
May our paths cross in World of Warcraft!

Open beta? will it ever come? lol. They said that european beta would begin soon after the signups..... wow, what do the word soon mean to them????!
Beta's arent really to allow to play first, i beta tested ground control 2, lots of mods, etc... and now im currently beta testing Axis & Allies so i really know what beta's are for. But surely anyone with brain here wanted to enter the beta with the main purpose of being able to play the game first and only then make suggestions, report bugs, etc....
Many of the bugs and other things were already solved on the US beta so europeans won't have many work....
But that's only my opinion.

LOL. It's just freaking hilarious how many people think that the whole point of Beta is to allow them to play the game first.
The point of the beta is to help the company 'develop' the game. Playing it first is your reward. Its amazing how few people DO realise that.
I beta tested EVE and loved it. However I sent in bug reports here and there unlike many, many others. It was coming close to release date and there were still a ton of bugs because people were too busy playing the game instead of helping to fix it.

Think this way..... many people wont be able to play wow because of the monthly fee.... It happens on all mmorpg and thats why they must change. Otherwise they will probably die or be cancelled. I understand that guild wars is a lot focused on battle but the game is looking so good with updates being made every second that it will probably be the best game. Btw, for the ones that dont know, there will be a public event of guild wars from 29th to 31st ocbtober which everyone will be able to play the game. If anyone is interested on more info check these websites: http://www.guildwars.com/ http://guildwars.ogaming.com/ http://www.gweurope.net/

Er, excuse me? That's exactly why most MMORPGs offer an open Beta or a free one-month trial when you buy the box.
And it has absolutely nothing to do with the purpose of a closed Beta.

I don't have a fansite or even a homepage at the moment. Just your average WoW junkie who got addicted before even playing.
I've only gotten a little taste and feel from emulated servers (which now are shut down), videos, screens and these forums :)
I've been in many betas before and I have been a nice little tester and submitted bugs. But I have to admit, its been a long time since I've been waiting this much for a game to come out.....or rather its beta.
This is the first time I haven't gotten into a beta, but I hope in the next few days that one of those golden mails will drop in my mailbox. :flip:
Blizzard don't give a sh*t about experience beta testers. All beta players are random choosen based on there pc specs.

Could you verify 2 things for us:
1. There is one beta server and one pvp server, right?
2. The version number of your beta client: is it 0.11.0?
Everyone who posted in the german forums so far was
a) webmaster of a fansite
b) member of a gaming magazine or some other journalist
c) member of a clan/guild that seems to have very good connections to the german community manager
Additionally very few people seem to be in right now; one poster told that after 4 hours of playtime he ran into the first other PC.
Conclusion: there is still lots of hope to get one of these precious mails for normal people like us :)

I've been playing with another guy the last hour or so, after about 2 hours of playing (although I was logged off for 1 1/2 hours of that). I also saw someone run by, but they were in a hurry and didn't stop to say hi :).

Do I need to download EU when I have US beta? | 10/1/2004 12:35:10 PM GMTDT
I was wondering if I need to download the whole game for EU beta when I am already in the US beta and have the latest version?
Or can I just change some configuration files?
Thanks in advance.
Thats basically saying:
"Hello Blizzard? I just wanted to tell you that I broke the rules and signed up for anything WoW related no matter the location even when I was already in the beta and now that I have several betas I just wanted to ask you if you could tell me how to switch between them?"
Or better yet: "I'm a bad boy, please punish me."
Heres for common sense. :drink: :drink: :xirish:

01-10-2004, 03:10 PM
The thing is, this EU beta isn't about testing for bugs. They've done that already with the American beta and both clients are now patched the same.
The EU beta I think is more about testing the servers, testing the CS etc. If its going retail in America come November/Dec then almost all bugs should be near to being ironed out.

Well, the US Beta Phase 3 was put on several bittorrent sites. He could've downloaded it in advance when he had nothing better to do.
I downloaded it once to try it on Stormcraft. Even though using the client on emulated servers is a NO-NO, it doesn't mean that someone in posession of the US Beta has been playing on US servers...or playing at all.....

Yeah, you did miss something: everybody was able to d/l the stress test client from fileplanet in the first few days. And everybody was able to get the following patches from Blizz (if they knew how).

Well you busted yourself with that wise remark. If one is in EUROPE why did he download/apply for a stress test ONLY for the US? You are also admiting that updating "through" other means a patch for a version that a european is not suppose to have is good...

Correct. But the file was listed as any other usual file on FilePlanet for the first few days (they took it out of the public list after 3 or 4 days), so everyone with a FP-account could download it. And that´s what a lot of people did. And that was what I was talking about :)

As stated above, there was nothing wrong with downloading that file which was avaible for everyone. I didn´t say anything about applying for the ST.

Well i did apply and play in the stress test. I never used any proxy though, i got home from work at just gone 6am(GMT) on the day it was released, there was a pic of warcraft on the fileplanet main site, i clicked it signed up and got my email, it wasnt untill after i woke up that my friends said they couldnt sign in becuase of an ip block, when i went to check i was then blocked and there was a note on the pic that it was NA only (it wasnt there at start).
so i believe maybe they either waited to put the ip block on europeans or never thought about it untill it was too late.
either way they sent me my key and account details (to a .co.uk email account) and i was able to play with no problems what so ever.
it wasnt malicious or pre planned, its not as if the ST was publicised before hand it was a simple mistake, and i dont think any of you with a key and a 2.5gig client wouldnt have even tried it if you had gotten them.

On a similar note, the European Download Test, contained all the code you needed to download the Korean (0.10.0) Installer, which I assume could be patched up to the same level as the current Euro Client. Its all there, freely available. There was no "I Agree" not to look at / modify / otherwise use any part of the downloader.

I sometimes think it was a bad idea going through with it, as fun as it was (and it was very very fun) i'm thinking i wouldnt be so anxious to get back their if i had never experienced it :(
also regret not trying too hard in it, i mean i made loads of chars and took them to lvl 14 max, because i "never wanted to ruin and higher lvl content" for myself :(
if id gone for it with just one char i might of stoof a chance at a beta slot, although it would have been U.S one :(

Here's why I think they didn't send all the beta invites at once:
1000s of people all clustered together in the same areas. Some of the quests require collecting stuff and if 1000s of people are in the area then it'll be like a freekin' queue to get through quests.
ATM I reckon maybe 100-200 people recieved emails judging from the tiny amount of people in game.

And btw, in first days before Stress Test if you looked in www.wow-europe.com (this site is only for Europeans) then maybe you saw that there Strest Test is coming, and there no word about North America. Don't know why Blizzard changed mind after few days, and put in all sites NA only.
Oddjob: if i remember correctly, in game is very good interface (hotkey O) to look how many ppl is online on your server. Just push Refresh button, and it shows 50 ppl names and in brackets how many ppl is on server total. Then you can make char on other server, and look how many is there. I think it's interesting info for all of us :)

I understand that they want to avoid questing queue´s, but if I remember correctly, both US beta first phase and stress test did have quite large number of people posting on the boards immediately after beta´s started (comparing to
at the most 30 people that posted in total across all 3 boards). Btw, there have been some rumors that only "vip" people (fansites admins etc) + few random guys/gals have been invited so far....

If you look at oddjob's invite it says "You were invited by xxxxxxxx" This, plus the low number of posts on the forums, seems to indicate to me that Anjin is correct. They probably had an invite phase and the general acceptance phase will happen today on Blizzards normal 9-5 (PDT) shift. It is almost 9:00 there, I bet they are doing the first mail merge of e-mail addresses and cd keys as we speak....

Yeah, you did miss something: everybody was able to d/l the stress test client from fileplanet in the first few days. And everybody was able to get the following patches from Blizz (if they knew how).
You shouldn´t make assumptions/accusations if you don´t know what you´re talking about...
Don't get to serious matey, its only a game.
And i know exactly where i am talking about, and you know it too.
Hosierman

Don't get to serious matey, its only a game.
And i know exactly where i am talking about, and you know it too.
I didn´t get serious at all. :)
But maybe I should have phrased my last sentence not so harsh. No offense intended Morphina, my apologies if that was too direct.
Anyway, I think I explained my point, and the facts support it. I know some people who did that, and I was for speaking for them, and not for me, when you accused them of 'illegal actions', which just wasn´t right.
Personally I am not from NA and did apply for the ST. I got in, stressed the servers a lot, and did tons of /bug´s and /suggest´s. If that makes me a criminal in your eyes - that´s fine with me ;)

I figure I might as well give an update on my first day of play.
It's awesome! Even though I've seen all of about 4 other people on the server, I'm having a blast. The graphics are VERY nice and have a great style. The monster killing is like with any other game I spose, but the monsters DO look tougher than in most MMOs. Lot's of quests to do, although most so far have been collecting/killing. Someone who got onto the main continent said it gets better regarding that.
No lag. Duh!
My only problem is sometimes it's hard to find the items you need for quests. You know generally where they are but I spent 30 minute looking for some amulet in Starbreeze village and still no luck.
When more people get on it should get a whole load better! P.S I got to level 10, I think I'm the 3rd highest exp on the server. Thereabouts.

frixion

Until we get an official reply, the client seems to be 2.5gb download, so you're probably looking at around 3gb install. I think Blizzard will be using their classic MoPaQ compression (.mpq files) which will still leave everything pretty much compressed when its installed.

no idea what tricks he used to get that many invites, but i myself, playing by the rules and signing up for each and every contest or beta i can find, havent got a single invite. well not counting stresstest that is. its sooooo frustrating.

yer, although buying your way in is a means to an end i just cannot see myself paying the kind of money that some people are paying just to play a beta, or even if it was retail tbh :( its a principle more than a money thing, although if blizz themselves came up with an option similar to stress test but at a price, like £5 a month or whatever i would jump at it probably :( but you have to be crazy to pay full price for a beta let alone well over the odds :(
and chances are blizz would find out and ban the key anyhow
worldofwar.de: What are you plans against real money for virtual items or accounts?

Its really odd but all the time I've followed WoW, watching the progress, the US beta etc I've been able to feel relaxed about it. Now with this Euro Beta starting I'm feeling really on edge. I imagine a lot of you are. As someone else said, its one thing to wait for the beta to start. Its another to sit waiting for an email that may never turn up. You start questioning if you borxed the online app! :)
These games can really take a hold of your life. That's probably not a good thing, but it shows how involving the genre can be. Beta or not, I'm glad that WoW is coming along so strongly to offer us something other than EQ. I'm glad its survived where other games have fallen by the wayside (Ultima UXO for example).

When you create a Beta account, from your activation key, you download a little program that downloads the WoW install for you (all 2.5gb of it)
If he sends you that program, you can download WoW, then you will need to log in with the username and password he created.

My advice to people who haven't got in yet is to assume you won't.
A lot of people seem to have gotten it into their heads that getting a beta invite is just a question of waiting for it to arrive.
Unless you enjoy disappointment: stop checking your email in boxes and go do something else!
Theres plenty of great games/demos being released now. And if nothing will satiate your appetite for WoW do something productive: draw some Warcraft art, write a Warcraft story!
Personally I've never played the Warcraft 3 expansion, so I just bought it!
While I haven't looked forward to a game as much as WoW for years, part of me doesn't want to get into the beta test. I'd rather get my first taste of the game when its at a level Blizzard feels is ready for release.

Yeah. I'm interested in seeing some numbers right now: How many people signed up for EU Beta? How many keys are being sent out this wave, how many in the next waves?
Another question is: Define "random selection".
Also, if I look at the topic about represented nationalities in the beta forum it seems as if in some way people are being selected country by country. Maybe they divide every batch of emails into certain percentages according to the number of selected signups per country? Or something to that extent.
Just speculating...

I got my beta mail from a friend last night. I used all night to download it.
Today (saturday), we're having a party. So I can't play WoW until late sunday. Its a pain to know you have WoW installed and ready to logon, but have to wait another day.
I guess the wait is well worth it though.
From what I can gather about the beta mails, they seem to be pretty random. Few, but still random. The friend I got mine from have nothing to do with any WoW site or know any Blizzard people. I just sent him the link to register. None of my other friends got in....that I know of yet. Also a couple of guys from work signed up and didn't get in.
I'm in Norway btw.
Hoping to see you testers in-game tomorrow!

Sunday morning, still nothing. I'm managing to take some peoples advise now and think that I'm not getting in and it will be a surprise if I do!
I still see relatively low numbers from the UK being represented on the boards. Also, could someone clarify for me please...
There appears to be two types of email. One that starts "You have been invited by XXXXXX" and one that starts "You have been selected to....". It sounds like a lot of the people at present are 'invited by' which suggests its still mainly VIPs, fansites and friends that are being allowed in.
For all those waiting however, perhaps take heart in the problems some of the early adopters are having. The downloader seems to be very slow for most people and the servers aren't that stable at present. Also the actual beta testers haven't really heard much from Blizzard these past few days, so I imagine they're either taking a well earned break of working flat out to improve things.
I hope everyone has an enjoyable Sunday. You never know - if you can forget about Wow for a while you may just be surprised! :)

Im in the Uk and very sadly none of the 10+ people in my guild have received a beta invite.
Though who ever said earlier that you dont have any right to get into a beta was correct, its worth pointing out that I believe have been accepted for every beta so far that I had signed up for( some 5 or 6 in total)
I guess that as MMOGs get more and more popular then the amount of people applying for beta tests will grow and grow, and not too far into the future people wont associate signing up for a beta, as getting accepted.
Bout my only gripe about the WoW beta is there seems to a large amount of whiney kiddies in it(whom I doubt actually do very little beta testing/bug reporting) The beta application form was very brief, and compared to other forms Id seen It asked you very few questions relating to your suitability to beta test.
Yunno there are actually people on the main forums who post things like "wow is ok but I dont pay to play anygame, so when it goes live I will move onto a dif game or beta test" or the bunches of people who go nucking futs about a nerf, 2 mins after the patch is released

Apparently, most of the people that have received Beta keys so far have been VIPs, selected by the german CM. The first wave was mainly people on his ICQ list. The second wave was mostly guilds, with a few token random keys sent out as well. I also read this on the US Beta forum:
there are even some german fansites who did not receive any keys, while other fansites did.
one of the fansites which didn't get keys is part of the old network the german CM worked with... but they split up in some sort of conflict.
what a coincidence!
That's interesting, don't you think. Didn't someone here mention a rumor about Kat being fired for showing favoritism? If that's true, I wouldn't be surprised if the german CM gets fired too :uhhuh:
Anyway... Isn't the random part of the selection process supposed to be automatic? If so, then why were no keys sent out yesterday (as far as I can tell)?

I wondered if that was the case. I guess all we can do is speculate though. I realise we're not owed anything, but it would be a nice gesture if they kept people more informed about the beta slots - percentage filled, number remaining etc.
On another note, I wanted to jump the gun 'just in case' I got a key, so I used a torrent for getting hold of the phase 3 client. However this client appears to have come from some groups that are trying to setup their own servers. I'm apprehensive to use it just in case its hacked in some way. I don't think it is - I think its the genuine. Has anyone who's actually in the beta used a similar client?

No groups are currently trying to setup their own server. A few groups were in the past, with one major group working on an actually playable one with things to do in it (not just an empty world), and they disbanded for whatever reasons. Soon afterwards Blizzard closed the biggest community site in the WoW emulated server scene, and it's been pretty much dead since.
So even if it has some group's name on it, the client you'll download is probably the same one that'll come from Blizzard - with some need for patching though.
