Is it just me or is the development in Mining skill just slow as a turtle? I'm not sure it's unbalanced but I know it's so goddamn slow that it's driving me nuts. I hate finding Mithril Deposits and Gold Veins I'm not even allowed to mine, even though they aren't really that scarce, I mean whats the point in having Mithril Deposits in places like Stonetalon Mountains and Thousand Needles other than drive the sense out of poor miners? Noone of the appropiate level can have the sufficient skill to mine these veins that early. My engineering skill craves that gold and mithril goddammit!

Hmmm.. at character lvl 28, my mining is currently at like 125 or so... never come across a mine I couldnt' use... although, I have never found anything better then a silver.... I don't think i'm in too low an area... i'm currently questing around the wetlands.... which have stuff up to about 36.... they kill me if I try to take them solo... so I don't think it's cause i'm in areas too low for my lvl? Maybe it's different for Horde?

I don't know about horde, but on alliance side the high-iron (you've been mining iron for some time and soon will be able to do the higher stuff) time takes the longest of all, after that it picks up again. I'm now at 298/300 mining at lvl 55, and only Thorium lvls me

Maybe it's different for Horde? if you are playing horde the place "charred vale" in stonetalon mountain has Mithril veins everywhere.(creatures are only lvl 20 - 25)
Im a miner myself, and i have to say, it was a real pain to walk past all those nice veins. xD
Really i found 3 places, just in that small area with mithril veins and noone mined it cause noone(including me) had high enough skills to do it.
I also found 2 iron veins, 1 silver and some cobber veins.
A really really nice place for a miner considering how small the area is. :)

I maxed in my lower fifties, never had the feeling it was going slow. Just start asap (lvl 5) and get everything you can. Make some mining trips if you find good spots from time to time, great source of income too.
Yes mining is slow compared to the others. My wife does herbalism and her skill is around 250 while my mining is at 163. I have a skinning Hunter and skill points are very easy.
Iron may be the bottleneck but other gathering professions don't seem to suffer from one.
I don't know about blacksmiths but as an engineer it has seriously gimped my progression. In order to complete the gnomish engineering quest I had to spend 10g on the metals because I can't mine them yet.

they should increase the cost of items sold to vendors so the actual cost of mining is weighed up with the fact finding minerals is v slow

Caves....
Its not that hard...just find a cave that has the right ore you want in it, and make a loop thru the cave from front to back, killing. Spend some time there, it lvls quick.
2 leveling caves I often tell people about are:
Tin/Incedentite (Incedentite is a quest ore that lvls you like Tin)
-Spider Cave in Wetlands (near the passage to Loch Modan)
Iron/Bloodstone (Bloodstone is a quest ore that lvls you like Iron)
-NE Corner of Arathi, up in the mountains, is a cave that holds this stuff
Just spend some time making mining lvling runs in those places and you will easily be to Mithril before you know it. Once you get to Mithril, it lvls a little faster.

:p I am only a lvl 30 and have my mining at 198. I tend to find most of my iron in thousand needles

Basically you just have to spend a little time doing mining runs. I spent an hour on it last night (switched NangaParbat from a leatherworker to an engy) and got up to 60+ on a mining run from the north end of darkshore all the way to Astranaar. It helped that I did it in the middle of the night with no competition for nodes - and that my friend is your key to success.
Competition for nodes is the biggest issue with mining. There are two professions that require it plus lots of folks who only do gathering for selling the raw materials. You'll find a lot more nodes when everyone else is sleeping.
Especially when you get around to doing the armor quests from STV, you'll want to do runs around Badlands for hours - nothing but mining. And this is one quest you really really want to do at 3 am. That's what I did and finished it way before a couple other guys who started at about the same time.

I am at 151 mining. Iron is hard to find (Except in the 1000 Needles). Tin is still green for me, so I get a mining point about every third node. The Charred Vale in Stonetalon is LOADED with Tin and Mithril, and the monsters are like Lvl 23-28, not too bad for me unless I start getting alot of adds.
Mining is slow, but I believe it will payoff in the long run.
Here's a tactic for you. Have a char that mines/BS/Eng, one that Skins/Leatherworks, one that Herbs/Enchants; that way they can trade necessary items back and forth to help each other along in development. It's much cheaper tan buying consumables, and trade items outright!

My level 20 Pal. has mining 95, has only found on silver and 2 tin deposits so far. So it hasn't gone up much for a while.
How quickly you're minning goes up depends on how much you use it.
If you think minig is painful, try enchanting. Hurts to disenchant those greenies that would otherwise give a good amount of money.

Personally Mining is as easy as pie. The only time I was stuck was when I was trying to mine truesilver a random of Mithril. Well I am lvl 52 and now have mining at 300, the max. Mine everything you see. I remember going to charred vale as I was on a warrior quest there and the mithril was great perhaps that is why it is there for lvl 28-32 alliance warrior miners on their quest.

I'm doing mining and skinning and the difference is really obvious. Skinning is almost too easy, the points are coming at you for free. At the moment, selling leather makes me more money too, but since I only sell bronze and copper, I expect it to change when I get to the Iron and mithril stage of mining.
Part of the problem is people that have Mining just to sell the raw materials on the market. It harms the rest of use that are trying to actually develope our characters, it's a sanctioned form of player interference. I don't really blame the kids that do it because it seems like an obvious, simple way for them to get money without really trying to do anything that requires thought or planning, pretty much on par for the immature player's mentality.
We can thank Blizzard for that. All they need to do is lock professions so you can't have 2 gathering professions at the same time. Eventually most of the people that already do have two will get bored and switch, or realize that the materials don't sell for enough to matter anymore.
As for the actual design of the Mining system, ya it needs revamping. They could increase the number of nodes and proportionally reduce the amount of resources per to avoid the problem of constantly needing minerals you don't have the skill to mine yet.

I don't think blocking ppl from having 2 gathering proffessions is a good idea. On the flipside of that, my mage has 2 production proffessions... engineering and enchanting. I send him supplies with my lvl 55 paladin. But at some point, I may decide to use my highest lvl character for gathering items to buily up my lower lvl characters skills.... I don't think that's wrong... if I put the time in to get a high lvl character, I would hope Blizzard would allow me to reap the benefits for my work.
BTW... I've never found other miners to be a large problem. Sometimes you party with another person who mines, and that Thorium vien comes up and your like "ah, bummer... I gotta share"... but hey, that's part of the game... I don't think it causes a big enough problem to make changes to the rules.
