i am currently a lvl 34 dwarven rogue, and recently found out that engineering is more of a money sink than i believe it is worth, at least at my level. i am thinking of changing this profession, but i dont want to make a big mistake and lose all i have accomplished. my level in engineering is 155 i think, and the only reason i am thinking of staying with it is because i love the look of the goggles on my character. i am in dire need of money (less than 10 gold at lvl 34) and i was wondering if anyone had any advice. i would truly appreciate it, thanx.

Engineering has some of the coolest stuff, if you can find the schems. Like the ornate spyglass, bombs, etc, but like every production profession, it's a money sink.

Believe it or not I'm making a killing off bronze tubes. They are needed for a quest. I sell them for 35s each and easily make a 2g profit. Scopes seem to do ok, but there is alot of competion. Some of the upper lvl trinkets sell well. The goblin dragon gun is VERY expenive to make. To buy the parts it'll prob take 10g but u could prob sell it for 20g. I haven't tried yet though. I'd go to thottbot and see which upper lvl recipes can be used by non-engineers and try selling those when u get ur skill up.

btw, the bombs gob engineers can make will rock ur world when ur in an instance. There u r surrounded by creeps and all of a sudden they loose 25-50% of their health. Everyone in ur group will say, "WTF WAS THAT?" The dragon gun is especially neat.

Yea, I'm gonna make a new char just to try out engineering. Looks really cool but the level 60's in my guild even they beleive it sinks money but can be profitable at times

Engineering is a money sink, as you can only sell your stuff to other engineers (With a few exceptions). But it makes up for it in the cool-factor. The goggles make you stand out, and so will your Pet Bomb and your mechanical toad. The goggles give amazing stats for the level you can make them, and the bombs are great for their added punch in a tight spot. Deepdive Helmet is also awesome for underwater exploring. Well, i didn't get engineering with my priest, but my Gnome Warrior is going down that path. I can't wait to see the look of surprise on some guy's face when he tries to kill me and i bring out my Heavy Iron Bomb. Wahahhaha.

I've been considering dropping my lvl 179 Blacksmithing and taking up Engineering. I'm a Paladin... and there are two things a paladin is lacking that i'm hoping Engineering will make up for...
1) Our damage sucks... we may be able to take a beating, but we sure as hell can't dish one out... extra damage would be a welcome addition to my arsenal
2) We have one AoE attack for gaining aggro (consecration)... and that's only if you sink 21 points into retribution talents... what about Pali's who want to be defense tanks and not retribution pali's, but can't get/hold aggro? Engineering has got some nice tricks to help out
3) (yeah, I know I said two.... but this is important also) Pali's have no ranged attack... our only way to pull is to walk up... inch up closer, inch up closer.... ah.. aggro... now run back. Engineering *may* help with that... although, maybe not... not sure if throwing a stick of boom boom into a mob is any better then just running up to them from a pulling perspective.

You forgot one of the most important things:
Gnomish Net-O-Matic.
Reads: Once every ten minutes, target runner must stay put and wait for you to kill them. When it fails, merely hit yourself with Blessing of Freedom and move on.
Personally, I went Gnomish Engineering for the Battle Chicken. I'm 35 and just cranked one out... pretty sweet DPS addition (at least 20) every half hour for 1:30.
I'll get the Death Ray hopefully by 36 or 37. I have the supplies to make it, but I'm 4 levels short and out of supplies to make mithril frag bombs :-(.
Basically, I got my angles covered. With a chicken, I have more DPS than the most decked warriors out there (once every half-hour... and I have a dragon which adds almost as much), I can hold aggro or stun my PvP opponents with oodles of bombs, I can stop them from running (main pally weakness in the PvP hunting department), and I will soon be able to pull.
The problem is that all the engineering gear has serious drawbacks (mainly in the time between casts and backfiring (which doesn't really matter when it happens).
The advantage is that I can bring more into a fight than anybody else.
No other character class can go immune for 18 seconds in two bursts for two complete heals, chuck bombs at you and stun you for longer than it took them to lob the bomb, heal themselves completely again (LoH), summon up a chicken, and then net you when you realize how hopeless the battle is and run for your life.
Yeah, I can do that once per hour, but really, how often do you get into a do-or-die battle? Once a day? Maybe twice?
The cooldowns don't matter nearly as much as you'd think.
