Using engineering items?

Let's say, I am skilled enough in engineering and have couple of nice items, like: Discombulator Ray, Net-o-Matic, Goblin Mortar, Bomb Dispenser, Shrink Ray, Cloaking Device, etc.. When I need to use one, do I have to “equip” it, or I could place them on action bar and then simply press proper key to use? I am wondering is it possible to use all of them in combat without going to character screen, or engineer is limited to some of them (currently equiped) and to use another he must go to character screen, or right click on particular item in bag?

What you do is equip them (i.e. your trinket spot) and then from your character screen, click+drag the item to your skill bar. You can click+drag items (like bombs for example) to your skill bar as well and use them like that.

Hijacking the thread somewhat ...

So, never having controlled a pet, once you use the Gnomish Mind Control Cap as described above, I get another menu pop up that I assume is to control the mob/player.

With only 20 seconds to figure it out, and a 1 hour cooldown, does anyone have any specific guidance as to what these buttons do? Or, maybe a link to an explanation?
