I see some people wandering around with military ranks...private, sergeant and so on. What does that all mean? Are they given in the game so how? How are they earned?

Thanks for your help

These ranks are earned by killing Players of the opposing faction (PvP), thus gaining honor. On all servers are so called Battlegrounds, were Horde and Alliance meet and fight. Honor is awarded there for achieving certain goals.

On PvP servers you also gain this honor in game while questing and killing members of the opposing faction (if you want to do that). There you are automatically flagged for PvP in contested territories. On a PvE server you can manually flag yourself by typing /pvp or by attacking a pvp flagged player.

So when that tauran druid that said ??? for level came by me...had I attacked him or typed in /pvp I could have been turned into a grease spot.

What about all those npc's I see with "pvp" on them. Do you get rank for defeating them as well. What about when a rank is earned. Can you loose rank as well? Does it degrade over time?

Yes, ?? or "skull" means certain death.

NPC are PvP and will attack members of the opposing faction on sight. You get NO honor for killing them. In fact, some have the word "civilian" underneath their name. Killing them gives DISHONOR (a fat deduction in honor in fact that happens immediately, not on wednesday when all honor is updated)

If you PvP for...say...several months and gain for example rank 8, then stop PvP altogether, one day you will be rank 1 again (that one you never lose)

Click "inspect" on a player with a rank, then look at his honor tab. You can see how much he PvPs and what his highest rank is/was.

Correct me if I'm wrong but are you saying that one DK can do that or does not PvPing for a LOOONG time do that?

While we are talking about that.. when we buy stuff for , example Field-Marshal Scepter (forgot the name) Did we loose it when we loose the title ?

Not anymore. Providing that you buy it when your rank is high enough to buy it, you can forever equip it, even if you lose a rank.

There are cool mounts too!

Check out worldofwarcraft.com and look at the pvp rewards, trolls get a sweet black raptor with red plate armor .... *huggles Raptor*

My goal in this game is to get my undead warlock a cute cuddley pink raptor mount.

I once saw an undead rogue in Gadgetzan riding a raptor.

Allow me to put this in the proper context.

A zombie ninja riding a dinosaur.

Ryan Sosa would be proud.

I believe that these mounts can be purchased at level 40. Has anyone ever gotten the required rank to buy one of these at or near level 40?

No, we are talking EPIC mounts (100% speed increase) for 90 gold at lv 60 and rank 11. Also to buy mounts of another faction you need to hand in a lot of runecloth (12 000) to gain the required rep. Well...really you can buy the mount anytime...but the riding lessons will be the problem.

The runecloth alone equals about 600 gold in AH (depending on server of course). But UD on Raptor IS a cool idea.

About DK and losing rank: You will lose that rank veeery slowly if you don't PvP. Example: One of my guildmates was rank 600 something and Segeant when the new RP-PvP servers came along and he quit. Although he hasn't touched his character since he only now (after 2 months or so) slips out of the Top 1000. At the same time I advanced through the ranks up to 197 with about 3 AB PuG games on 3-4 days a week.

Thats what I always thought as well, but looking here (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/rewards-mounts.html) it says that you can get them at level 40? Does this mean you can technically get an epic mount at level 40? This can't be right. Typo maybe?

Either way though, rank 11 would be pretty hard to come by at that level.

You will have the PvP-flag switch on if you assist a player who has the PvP-flag set, as well. If you heal someone, for instance. I've been turned to itsy spots by doing just that. It sneaks up on you, if you tend to do run-by healing and buffing.

Looks like you are right about the level. But as you said: Rank 11 at lv 40 is not going to happen :)

technicaly you could, however cp gain is handcapped prior to lvl 50 or so (and even then doesn't reach full potential until around 59-60ish) so the only way you could get rank 11 that low is if just about everyone else on the server stopped pvping and only you kept going :P

They might be used for equipment and items, but I've only seen them used as measures of patience one has for doing the same battle over and over.
