Problems with onboard video. need help

hey guys. i'm here at the parents house, visiting them for the holidays. some of my friends are getting into world of warcraft, so i figured i'd join them.

now comes the problem. only computers here are old school crap. there is one computer that meets the min of the game, but alas the videocard does not. I got a new card for christmas and was planning to throw it in, but no slots. the computer in question only has on board video.

so my question is, is there any ways to fool the computer or programs( such as world of warcraft ) into believing that this onboard video is a 32 MB 3D graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting, such as NVIDIA® GeForce™ 2 class card or above?

any programs or such that might do this? if i'm not clear enough i'll try to clear it up, but help would be great.

the onboard video is the sis 740 chip set. i have the 6.14 version, i have direct x 9.0c installed and all the tests from dxdiag work fine. but it keeps telling me wow can't load up 3d acceleration, even though as far as i know, from what i've read online it should.

by searching online it seems there are many who have the same chipset that actually run WoW, so i'm hoping you guys will be able to give me the advice thats needed to get playing, if thats at all possible.

If you're the Seppuku from Shadowsong, first let me say thanks, you make nice gear :-)

What may prolly be happening, as this chipset should [theoretically] work in low detail, and low effects mode, is that 3D acceleration is off in Windows. DxDiag tests OK, but games still don't work. This is a common 'fix' from helplines and the like.

I would:

1. Update AGP/Chipset drivers, with latest SiS generics.
2. Update VGA chip drivers with latest SiS generics.
3. Then Check:

Win XP
=====
[R]-click desktop, properties, settings, advanced, troubleshoot. Make sure hardware acceleration is on full, and write-combining is OFF.

If you're not on XP, the setting is in a similar place.

no luck. i've done all that and it still tells me it can't start 3d acceleration. i even tried opengl but all i get is that 132 error. :(

and i really wanted to play over the holidays. :xmas11:

Error #132 is a nightmare to fix.

The only thing I have seen that works is to change RAM sticks, usually one or more is failing at a high register. Does not cause problems normally, but WoW uses so much RAM it tends to make RAM work very hard indeed.
If replacing one or more sticks of RAM does not help you can manually reduce memory timings in BIOS, but this is pretty hardcore messing about.

I used to get error 132 all the time, the only fix for me was an upgrade of 512 MD of RAM on top of my 256, and a new video card to boot..

SiS video = utter garbage.

Either ATI or Nvidia add-in card is the way to go, pick your poison.

well i have a ati radeon x700 pro and a geforce fx 5200 both just sitting here, ones a christmas gift for my comp in uni and the other is from an old computer. but motherboard has no agp slot so i'm stuck with onboard video. and the comps not mine, so i'm not going out of mjy way to buy new parts to put in it. just wanted something to play over the next 2 weeks while i'm here.

i know my sis onboard card won't work all that well, but i do have another question. the only card i can get ahold of thats pci is the old rage 3d 8 meg card. what do you guys think is the chances of that running wow on its lowest settings? i'm grasping at straws now. :xmas4:

Minimum requirement is still a 32 MB 3D graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting. You'd probably be better off buying the WoW boardgame, than sticking that thing in the computer and hoping that WoW will run at its lowest settings.

Best advice?? Tough it out, till you're back at uni. WoW, won't run away, and you won't be trying to scoop your eyes out in frustration either.
