View Full Version : Getting Rank 10

I reached rank 7 this week, and I was wondering, is it hard to reach rank 10? I usually get something around 100k honor a week (standing is in 90's) and do AB as often as I can.
So is it possible for me to reach rank 10, and how long does it take to reach it?

Many thanks!

I think you are just at the limit. If you could push your standing to 70 each week you should be able to get rank 10 I think.

Of course it depends on many other factors, but I think that your standing is probably the best measure.

You will probably reach rank 10, but never reach rank 11, if you keep that pace up (every week for about 4 months total).

Now how funny is that. I just replyed to a thread about an epic mount and the rank 10/11 question popped up:

I'm told 100k honor per week, for four months is required for rank 10...I figure an additional two months for rank 11...

Unless I'm wrong...figure 5 hours a day, five days a week...for six months...600 hours...

So, even if I am over by 300 hours, if you can grind more than a couple of gold per hour(which is quite easy to do, for anyone over lvl 40), you are ahead by grinding...

Of course it is not like that on every server. I PvP about 2 hours per day on week days and 4 on weekends...but I don't do that 7 days a week. My honor has been ranging from under 5000 in the first weeks to 125 000 in my best week, averaging at about 50 000 I would say. Soon rank 10..but of course the road to rank 11 might still increase in difficulty.

Which server? Is your forum name and your in-game name the same?

I'd love to follow your progress!

How long have you been pvp'ng this way to get to whatever rank you are at now?

My signature and the realm under my avatar answer that, I also update my rank there.

I used to hate PvP, coming from a Diablo 2 Hardcore mindset, where a player killer could ruin weeks and weeks of "work", but as I reached lv 60 I participated in a spot of Tarren Mill...I think that was even before the introduction of Arathi Basin.

A friend of mine was active since lv 50 or so in WSG with his Paladin and always 2-3 ranks ahead and he kinda "iinfected" me with the PvP bug. So it was tarren Mill once a week every tuesday, the a few hours in Alterac. A bit more PvP in Arathi Basin. I really slowly advanced with 1000, later 5000 honor per week..so this is really no measurement. I think it took me 2-3 weeks to reach every rank from 1-5 (so 10-15 weeks all in total). Of course that really is a joke nowadays. PvP one week with 50 000 honor straight through and you are rank 3 in a week..or even better.

First a "cool" title, like Stone Guard was my goal...then Blood Guard became a possibility and a reality. Soon the greed for the "medium" PvP set and the exhalted rewards with Defilers set in. I got TitanPanel and could suddenly follow my progress closely..adding an extra amount of pressure.

Bein a bit of a geek..here is my recordings of my advances since I hit Bloodguard. That week I counted as "week 1"..of course it wasn't really the first week:

1 week: 1% Bloodguard – 50000 HP this resulted in 42% advance to:
2 week: 43% Bloodguard – 70000 HP this resulted in42% advance to:
3 week: 85% Bloodguard – 62000 HP this resulted in 33% advance to:
4 week: 18% Legionnaire – 72000 HP this resulted in 30% advance to:
5 week: 48% Legionnaire - 82000 HP this resulted in 12% advance to:
6 week: 60% Legionnaire – 95000 HP this resulted in 30% advance to:
7 week: 90% Legionnaire – 125 000 HP this resulted in 46% advance to:
8 week: 36% Centurion - (as of today 100 000 HP)

HP being Honor Points. Our rank 14 wannabes make 300 to 400 000 HP, in week 5 they made even 600 000. so my 82000 HP was only worth a 12% advance while the week before 72000 HP advanced me 30% inside rank 8

Nice stuff! Now I have a new goal to shoot for...I'm told that blood Guard is where the cool mage stuff begins to become available...heh

I must be blind, since I still can't figure out which realm...Thought you indicated it might be under your pic...but it isn't there, for me.

To reflect on the epic mt question in the other thread...

As I understand...you've spent around 23 weeks at aprx 10 hours a week = 230 hours...

900/230 ~ 4 g per hour, if you farmed...and I can get more like 15-20g/hour farming, making an epic avail in 45-60 hours.

Rank is neat! But, I wouldn't use pvp as a means to a mount, unless you LIKE pvp alot.

DoH..thanks for pointing that out. Realm used to be under my avatar and I tried to set it again in Edit Profile..but it doesn't work. Yes, It is EU_Earthen Ring as Valas said.

Luckily I chose a warlock = coolest mount...so no need for cross faction rep for a more interesting mount or rank 11 for a "cheap" one.

But I wouldn't just set the hours needed for rank 11 against grinding but also the boots, robe, helm, shoulders, gloves, bracers and shoulders as well as trinkets and cape that you get from rank 2-10. Plus an epic staff. At rank 9 I have already 11000/21000 rep with Defilers...certainly casters are getting a good deal here...

/agree wholeheartedly...

I was computing hours and cost only because someone had suggested in the other thread that the pvp epic is 'only' 90g...

Well, sure it is only 90g, if you don't consider the time spent getting to rank 11.

I may send my mage on the pvp path...based on your thoughts as well as those of a StoneGuard friend of mine.

Eh? I checked some guy he had the 2nd standing and only had 200k honor (he was half way through field marshal)

Maybe I might get my rank 11 with only 2 hours of PvP a day (and 4 hours of PvP on Sat/Sun)

Yes, there is a guild called Inner sanctum that posts nice MC/BWL guides (On EU_Silvermoon) and one of them made rank 14 in a week with 130 000 honor.

On my server, the last 4 players that ran for rank 14 made 600 000 in the bonus week for WSG..which really kills the average players honor rating/advance...

I just started to run for the blue gear, helm is on rank 10 and if it is true ... it's terrible : /

It is nice to see some HP figures and compare how much people need to increase rank. shame it differs on all servers, I am 22% into rank 8 and my position is 272 while when you were around that point your position was 131 so that means there is much more active PvP on my server. More competetion but also a large honour pool. shame Blizz do not give out the contribution points per week so you could get an idea how much honour per week you need to reach a certain rank. http://www.wowguru.com used to offer you a good history system which gave an estimated rank based on your previous gains, but that seems to be broken for EU servers now :( US ones work like this http://www.wowguru.com/db/chars/rosen-id935242/

Well I am aiming for rank 10 as well (http://www.wow-rankings.de/en/character.php?s_server=Al_Akir&characterName=Wharfe)

I am fairly sure that rank 11 is near immpossible for me due to only playing 2-3 hours per evening. But I will carry on PvPing until Exalted AB/AV for the rewards, hopefully lvl 70 versions will be added eventually once the expansion is out.

shame really as I would love to get the rank 12/13 armour and 14 weapon but realism kicks in. I think I may even get round to buying my epic mount as the rank 11 one is out of reach.

If you're in the market to gain rank so you can get the top-end gear/mount, you're MUCH better off joining a guild that runs ZG+ or just go farm. It would take less time and less headache. There are people that share characters to play in BG's.. there are people that pay companies good money to PvP for them 24/7 so they can gain rank.
How can your 6 hours a day compete with someones 23hours a day?
To me, PvP for rank(gear/mount) is a total waste of time as the system is hosed.

i am not advocating this at all but..
If I really desperately need to have PvP rank for whatever reason, I would just play an alt on a different account and pay some lackey to level my main PvP toon for me. Way less headache and time spent.

If there were a way to start an alt on a new server, get him to 60 and gain one of the top ranks, buy his gear and then transfer him to your main server.. i'd try that.

Metatron
17-02-2006, 03:21 PM
Well that defeats the whole object and offers no feeling of accomplishment when you've made it. But I guess it is the way of the world today. That's too hard. I'll get someone else to do it for me while I go off and have fun with something else. When I get to 60 I'm gonna go for it. And I'm gonna get there. And I'm gonna feel like I've acheived something monumental when I make rank 14. Not just "Oh good. That trained monkey I paid to do it for me is done now."

Astayanax
17-02-2006, 07:38 PM
Accomplishment usually goes hand to hand in skill and difficulty of the task. The only thing difficult about getting good rank in PvP is the time required to do so. I should know as all of the grand marshals on my server are among the worst pvpers I ever saw.

And I'm gonna feel like I've acheived something monumental when I make rank 14.

You would have achieved something alright, but when you do get there you will find it isn't what you quite expected.

I don't know about rank 14 and the time it takes, all I know is that rank 10 is all I can manage and with 2-3 hours per day all I can invest.

The suggestion to "just find a guild and farm ZG and MC" is easier than it sounds...and I am in a situation where I can judge both: PvP and Instancing.

We did ZG and so far failed miserably most of the times. 2-3 bosses..and that is it. Wiping on trashies.

MC is going much better, we started in January and yesterday did 6 bosses in an 8 hour run. The raid group does 2 runs on weekends, maybe a trash run on another day. Well...I didn't win anything so far. And it will possibly take me 4 months before I ever come close to a full felheart set.

In the meantime I am exalted with Defilers and will have a 6 piece PvP set on wednesday (fingers crossed). If you add the time needed to farm reagents for MC runs, fishing, herbgathering, organizing etc, I don't yet see a great discrepancy between my PvP investments and MC investments. Hell..atm single felheart pieces would actually mess up my set bonus on my pvp kit :)

Hey Det, I was wondering, how long have you been doing PvP?

I will hopefully hit rank 11 next week, but that's after 6 months of casual PvP, and another 2 months with more than casual PvP. Was just wondering how long it had taken you.

One of the reasons for my slow progress is that some weeks I have hardly even played, and so it would take me one week to make up for the loss, thus being set back by 2 weeks.

det
21-02-2006, 05:24 PM
If the link that was posted here earlier by Wharfe is to be trusted I started in week 35 of last year (well..I was rank 2 then, so give or take another week). That is 17-18 weeks last year and 8 weeks this year. 26 weeks=half a year for rank 1-10, again what I consider not too hardcore playing.

But atm PvP gets really serious and timeconsuming, which is why I will stop after I reached rank 10. To get to rank 11 it would have to be another 4 weeks but at 4 hours PvP aday, with the possibility of suffereing on WSG weekends

Just felt I could contribute to this with my PvP'ing.

After about 3 months with 100k honor a week on average I am now 69% into rank 10. I figure I'll make 11 next week if I put my back into it.

One piece of advice. You WILL get sick and tired of AB after day in and day out of grinding. Right now its almost fun just to go to the poison vendor. Anywhere but the BG's is like an adventure. And you will also experience increased courage in world pvp. :)
One of my latest trips "outside" and I charge headfirst into an orc warrior, get my butt handed to me and then swear because I forgot I have to run back to my corpse and all that.

Anyway. As I see it, (at least on my current server), you can easily get to rank 11 with casual play. But be prepared that in the end you will get very sick of it all. Good luck :D

doesn't the gear require you to be a certain rank? so say now that you reached rank 10, you got the gear, so don't you have to still pvp all the time just so that you can wear your aquired gear?

Ryste

No. Once you get the rank to use the gear, you can use the gear even after you lose the rank.

A rank 14 can use rank 14 gears forever even if he stops pvp all together.

Grats on rank 10 Det :D

I have given up for now and I will just hold my rank at rank 8, I need 20-30k per week to hold this rank and thats easy with 2-3 evenings per week doing PvP.

I want to keep officer rank to allow me to buy potions, but I doubt I will ever get round to rank 10, it is just too time consuming for me. But I want the rep in the BG's as I hope they will provide lvl 70 gear for them once the expansion comes out, and you do not lose rep :D

What makes the rank 14 gear so special for PvP? Does it give you special bonuses when fighting in a BG or when you are fighting a PC? Something like how I've seen a pair of gloves I that give you like +20 attack power when fighting beasts. Is it something like that?

Grendo

Its class-specific, purple quality gear that is setup as to be effective (or supposed to be) for the class in a PvP environment (say more +crit% on gear, instead of more intellect).

The models are also very unique, and you will find much less of a specific set per server than say Tier1 or 2 gear.

The idea is that theyre purple/epic items without having to raid. Sadly they take MUCH more time to get than raiding would grant.

galzohar
25-02-2006, 02:37 AM
The weapons are the best in the game period. The set items may rarely be the best in the game for PvP and probably never the best for PvE, they are pretty awesome items, and besides, you only need 2 of them for the +15 sta set bonus.
I know I wouldn't sub the rogue chestpiece for anything in the game and would have a hard time replace anything other than the headpiece anytime soon.

Nah..I find every Undead caster at rank 10 looks very similar: Champion set and Ironbark staff. Mages in blue, Warlocks in brown....
