I am curious as to why we have them. The way I understand it, DKs were initiated to placate the people crying about their quest npcs being killed during raids on their towns. Now TM and SS, Xroads and the like are boring, as no one is willing to risk their pvp ranking because someone kills a civilian in the bloodlust.
Well, why not just make quest npcs and merchants invulnerable and permarooted? Or an invalid target? Or am I totally missing something....?

I guess another reason is to allow low level players to quest in peace, in places like Crossroads and Astranaar. Might just stop some bored level 60's deciding to gank everyone ...
Maybe also to allow some kind of stratagy and team work in town raids. Before it was just kill everything in sight - now you have to beware of DK's, so it means co-ordinating with others, being careful where you attack and whom ...
But mainly (according to all the whiners on the official boards), it's because Blizz are clueless and hate all their players

I don't think they hate us, but yeah, I agree on the clueless part.

I think blizzard mistakingly thought we only have carebear servers...
What I particularly dislike is when you have an uneven grouping (e.g. lvl 47 and a bunch of 60s). The lower level one might get attacked by what is a civi to the 60s, yet not to them and kill it... Instant DK for the entire family other than the 47.
DKs are horridly implemented imo and really have no place on PvP servers at all. Just make it so you can't damage a civi and they can't damage you. Problem solved.

DK's = Stupid. City Raids = Non Existant as people are to scared to risk their precious ranking.

DK's are great ! I'm a pure blood Carebear, I loathe PvP, and anything that winds up all the leet kiddies on the boards makes me a happy bunny

The Forsaken want to kill all things human. How do dk's fit into their lore?

Honor isn't just your perception, but what others see of your actions? The forsaken could care less, but the rest of the horde doesn't like it too much.

Well, not to flaunt my own mod or any others that have it incorporated (Dishonorable Kill Spotter for one), but my HonorTab mod has it set by default that you can't target a civilian and hence, can't attack them at all. Taking this one step further like DKS has, pet and party detection can have you removed from the party to prevent others from getting a DK from your actions or others.
I personally think DKs came strictly from XR and TM raids..it's not just alliance, it's horde as well. Before honor was implemented, you'd have a horde group of 60s right outside of SS nailing everything in sight. After honor, you had alliance just rolling through TM. Biggest difference was that SS did NOT have the guard details like TM does (still doesn't) and hence, more civilians could get killed.

Take someone like me, who could care less about dk's and PVP ranking. Suppose I wanna go to XR and get revenge on those gaurds that killed me a few times on way to get my Succy, any downside besides being flagged for PVP? I really could care less, if I am the lowest ranked PVP in the game.

Guards never give DK.

We Forsaken are highly disciplined individuals, not mindless zombies indulging their bestial urges. If Our Dark Lady decides that a certain human possesses sufficient strategic value as a survivor, then, no matter how much we'd love to sink our fangs into his succulent flesh, we will let him be. It is most unwise to disobey a direct order of a commander as unforgiving as Lady Sylvanas or Lord Varimathras.
Indeed, even me and my colleagues of the Royal Apothecary Society recognize the wisdom of this approach. After all, what good is a plague outbreak if no carrier escapes to bear it to the next settlement?

i hate DKs, and wish they were removed. make the civvies untargetable by opposing faction (and take no dmg from aoe), then lowbies dont get their quest givers killed, and people can still raid towns. Theres loads of ways to implement an effective system that works for both sides but this misses the point --- DKs were implemented because the servers couldnt handle massive city raids. Now blizzard, being the greedy little bar stewards they are had 2 choices : invest in better servers with the money we pay every month to play this game, or invent a system that all but elliminates city raiding. We all know which one they chose.
My tip is to make an alt strictly to rack up DKs with (assuming you care about pvp ranking).
Me and some friends returned to a server we no longer play on and took our old lvl60s on a DK PvP outing. Raiding XR etc and not caring who you kill was great, best PvP we have had in a long long time. Raked up somewhere in the region of 200 DKs each, all busted back to Private, it was very liberating
