Hi everybody
This is my first time posting here (all those other posts were from the pre-split d2 forums). After years and years of D2, I just bought this game and toodled around with it last night for an hour or so. I've never really played a MMORPG before except about 2 weeks of Guild Wars (I got bored and never really gave it the full chance it deserved. Oh well!) I'm on the Rexxar realm or something. I made a human paladin because it seemed from the description to be a nicely balanced and easy to use character type. I'm sure I'll scrap her once I learn what I'm doing. We'll see. I was pleasantly surprised when (30 seconds after I started) a lvl 20-something partied with me and answered all my questions and helped me quest a bit. Overall, everyone seemed pretty friendly. The general chatter was sometimes a little ribald but it wasn't anything like the annoying 12-year old flamefest in pubby games of D2  . So far, I have no idea what I'm doing, where I'm going, or why I'm doing it but it's been fun nonetheless (eventually you do get quests other than the go "here" and kill "this" and collect "these" and return to me type quests, right??)
Anyway, I've been poking around the forums and resources here and if they are anything like the D2 forums and resources, I'll be right at home!
OK, just wanted to say hello!
PS-Why didn't my D2 forum palship carry over to here? :ponder:

Welcome to WoW. We welcome with open arms anyone who can piece words together in a sentence that slightly makes sense. Good Luck on your quest to glory and shiny things that make people hurt. O yea and a word of advice. "Horde r teh suxor keel em all ded."

Balanced? Arguably yes, with certain talent choices (you'll make them from lvl 10). Easy to use? I would say "easy to play, hard to play well". To be a good pally you have to understand what all your abilities do, and eventually much of what others' abilities do as well. This is obviously true of all classes, but I think for some more than others.
Yes, my main is a pally. How did you guess? ;-)

Not as much as you'd hope.... :-(
You start to get more storyline to them in a bit if you take the time to read it - humans have a good plot that starts around maybe lvl 10-12ish - but the actual quest content is usually still like that. I did see something from Blizzard at one point about how they originally intended to have more interesting quest mechanics post-release, but have never got around to it.
Good luck, and fight the addiction!

a) Not really, I mean they are pretty much the bread and butter of regular RPGs as well. There are some Acquire X for me and then come back, which can be done through tradeskills. There's the occasional, drop this off there and come back to me. Or go see so and so. All in all fairly standard actually, just a very pretty wrapper.
b) Afaik, they are considered different forums, being a PAL on one doesn't translate over to the other. Might want to PM Elly for more info.

Hey innorton,
Getting help from a level 20 early on is nice, but make sure you still know what you are doing. Personally I found it a lot more fun to discover everything on my own pace, so this might be the reason you are a bit lost.
But anyway, you seem to be enjoying yourself just fine, so it's no biggie. Welcome to the forums. Your palship didn't carry over, because since the forum split, these forums are handled separately as well. Prolonging your pal subscription over at diabloii.net will not prolong it here.

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm a little disappointed to learn about the lack of diversity of the quests but what do you want for potentially hundreds of dollars over the coming years...
Snowieken: the lvl 20 only helped me with a couple of quests but mostly he answered my questions about how to whisper, how to check quest status, and how to interact with the world and other players. I was still on my own for most of the night so I had plenty of time to adventure and discover things on my own. I definitely wouldn't want a "rush" for my first character.
Most of my confusion was just about what in the heck was going on. Why were people running past me and zapping me with spells? how do I learn new skils? Can I acquire/assign stat points? that kind of stuff. I'm picking it up but it's been tough because this is the first Warcraft game I've really played so it's all new to me.
Thanks again for the info everybody!
PS-Guess I gotta reup on the palship...

Hey! who let this guy in??
Welcome!
Since you are playing a Paladin you might want to stop by the Paladin Forum.
Located here:

As to people running past you and zapping spells on you, that sounds like Priests and Palading and Druids.
WoW has "Buffs" and "Debuffs" Ceratin classes like the Paladins, Priests and Druids for example can cast buffs on other players - regardless of if they are in your party. Priests usually cast [Prayer Word: Fortitude] on people, as it raises Life and (I think) stamina. Paladins can cast buffs called Blessings. Example : [Blessing of Might] and [Blessing of Kings]. Druids can also buff.
You learn new skills at your class trainer, and then only when you level up at an even level, so you will learn new skills at levels 2,4,6,8 and so on. There are no stat points to assign with Toons (the WoW name for characters) instead, you get "Talents" starting at level 10. Talents allow you to customize your classes build.

I'll try to answer a couple of your new questions as best I can.
People "Zapping" you with spells are just your local friendly priests/mages who can cast buffs while in movement. I almost always am buffed with Arcane Intellect and other various spells. No harm no foul.
You do not dole out your own stat points, you get them as you level up. At the end of the game all Paladins will have the same amount of base strength, agility, etc. (I think), but youll have more or less than others depending on your gear and current buffs, etc.
You do dole out your own Talent points, though not until level 10. you can see that window by hitting the N key. Dont worry if you mess up, you can re-spec whenever you want (for a price, and it goes up every time, starting at 1G)
What skills do you want to learn? Professions are in cities and some are in various towns. Weapons masters teach you to use new weapons and those are only found in cities. (You will have to go to each city to learn them all)
It takes a while to really get the hang of the game, and I've only been playing for abou 2.5 months. Youll really begin to enjoy it, trust me. Any questions you have, post in general chat. Youll find a lot of help.
By the way, to chat in General, make sure you type /1, and then hit space. youll see "General" come up. This is something the manual doesnt tell you and if you just hit enter and start to talk it will come up as "XXX Says: "blah blah". When you "say" something, only the people near you hear it. When you type in general, everyone in that region hears it. Definately make sure you are tpying to the right channels. I wish i knew that before level 25 LOL

Hi Gorny. Nice place ya got here. I'll try to remember to take off my shoes and stay off the "fancy" furniture.
Seriously though I'm excited to see the responses I've gotten and I can tell this forum has the same attitude of helpfulness and friendliness that made the Diinet forums so comfy :cloud9: ... I certainly wasn't looking forward to trying to get up to speed using the bliz official forums :unimpressed:
I'm going to keep poking around and I'll get some time to play this weekend so I'm sure I'll be back here (or the appropriate location) with all my questions!
Thanks everyone and keep the comments and suggestions coming
PS-What are the chances that a spot opens up on Llane anytime soon? Do they ever reopen? It seems like that's where most of the people from the D2 forums, and these forums as well, for that matter, play...

I am a Lvl 16 Tauren Hunter and i heard from the other threads that 50g isn't a lot, now I was generously given 5g from a Lvl 50 odd, I have used it to buy weopons and other things but i always try to keep some money flowing. If 50g isn't a lot then why have i only sniffed at the number in the auction houses gazing into the weopons i can neither use nor afford.
P.S As a general statement this is not a plea for gold.

because lvl 16 mobs drop 40ish copper when you kill them whereas lvl 60 mobs drop 10ish silver when you kill them
