How useful is engineering/blacksmithing to a rogue?
Are the bombs, target dummies, and practice locks worthwhile, or is herb/alch or skinning/leatherworking the way to go?
Just curious; post your thoughts.

Engineering is invaluable for the raiding PvE rogue, every raiding rogue or hunter should really be carrying XL jumpleads IMHO. Vanish/FD to get out of combat and you stand a pretty good chance of saving a corpserun when things go wrong, people will love you for that.
A rogue with jumpleads automatically doubles in value, IMHO.

I dropped it. The trinkets are cool but not very useful for anything but dueling.
The bombs are worthless in PvE. If anything they are only good for BG PvP. Jumper cables are nice if you don't do anything higher than UBRS. Bosses won't let you stay OOC in ZG+.
So if you're a dueler, yes. Otherwise, eh, nothing special. I miss my hyper-radiant trinkets but thats about it.

A druid can stealth to a wipe spot and ress up pretty easily really. With how broken vanish is these days, I doubt you could actually vanish and cables :P

what about iron grenades for that emergency 3 sec stun when your healer needs to get out of a scrummage?
Hell, iron grenades can even be thrown when you are running!
Flash bombs are a nice extra too - all animals inc druids in animal form run for 10 secs!
+18 fire resistance X2 !!! (hyper radiant trinkets)
Jumper cables
teleport to either everlook or gadzetran - i do use this a bit (only works once every 4 hours though)
arcanite dragonling .....well ok thats actually crap :-( did i read somewhere that they are buffing that or was that a WOW dream?

I have engineering now and am considering dropping it. I have all the trinkets and all, but I just am not finding it very useful. I don't duel and in the BG's I find myself not using them much. Now, that is partially my fault, but I am just not seeing the benefit as much. I have been toying with trying bombs that incapacitate durign BG PVP to hold a stunlock, but that's tough because rarely are things 1v1.
The main benefit I find now is the transporter...very quick and easy way to get to the other continent. I make repair bots for the guild, but there are other engineers that can do that, so it's not as important.
I am going to give it some more time and try to use more trinkets but right now I just don't know how valuable it is. I may just make some extras and spares of items and drop it...I am also an alchemist so thinking of getting herbalism to support that habit.
For the OP...engineering definitely has utility and can be fun. Target dummies I used for a little while at early levels, but now are a means to fused wiring. Perhaps I should try to use them more, but I just don't see myself in situations where it would benefit. Jumper Cables are a big benefit, but Osiris is accurate in that it's situational. Practice locks are worthless...there are enough areas now to upgrade your LP skill that wasting the time/mats on these is just that, a waste...at least in my opinion. The bombs can help in the BG's, but I hate having to time the lag to make them work...still, that is my problem. They can make a difference....
There are some good threads in the professions area I think on the things that you can make and use...

I have an entire 16 slot overflowing with trinkets i want to but am afraid to throw away. Also, for the most part engineering is a goldsink. Making pots will help u, ur guild, and ur money pouch. also leatherworking i suppose would be pretter nice as well.
