Well, this topic seemed popular before the boards got all wacky, and since it doesn't seem like it'll return I'm starting ut up once again.
Here you can ask all kinds of harebrained and/or stupid questions that'll make you go "Doh, I should have known!" when you get the answer.
Here's my question:
What is DKP? I think it's raid-related, but I'm not sure...

This is good. Now I don't have to have to make threads to ask questions. Ok, how do you make a general message? Whenever I press /1, I type my message and when I enter it, it says "you're not allowed to do this" or something like that.

DKP = dragon kill points
It's how organized guilds distribute loot in a fairer way than just /random.

Sounds to me like youre playing the trial version. You need to enter a retail key to "upgrade".
As I understand it DKP is basically a currency system within guilds. Whenever you attend a raid or event, you get a set amount of DKP for your trouble. When items drop, people then bid against eachother using their DKP. This means that the people that put in more time have the most DKP to spend on items.
There are all sorts of variant DKP systems though, im sure someone else can explain it better.

Q : Can somebody Line up The mounts which are spesific to Race and Class , Thank u
Raptor's - Troll
Wolves - Orc
Kodo - Tauran
Skeletal Horse - Undead
Horse - Human/Paladin
Riding Sabre - Elf
Mechanical Chicken - Gnome
Ram - Dwarf
Felsteed/Dreadsteed - Warlocks
There are also other types of mounts in the game that can be grabbed... Also, if a horde member gets to exalted with a particular faction, he can nab that mount from them (For example, an orc gets to Exalted with Trolls, he can train Raptor riding and buy a raptor) Same on Alliance side...

When you kill monsters sometimes they drop stuff your guy can equip (armor, weapons, etc..) or use otherwise (crafting pattern, crafting ingredient, etc..) as you know. Some monsters are too tough to kill solo at the level they are at, they just have too much health and sometimes hit a bit harder too. These are known as elites and they usualy drop slightly better "stuff" than the non elites that level.
It usualy takes more than one person to kill them, but different places have different difficulty elites. If you have a quest that says (Elite) it means you will likely be fighting elite mobs in order to complete it. While there are some elite monsters out and about in the regular world, most are in things called instances. An instance is a dungeon that is behind a "portal". When you enter the portal you (and your group if you're not alone) are together in the dungeon but nobody else can come in, the dungeon is all for you. This was made because in some earlier games people would sit in a dungeon and kill all the monsters there and not let anyone else kill any monsters. Now everyone gets their own instance. Usualy a 5 man group is the best balance to take into an instance provided everyone is of the right level for it (meaning if the instance has lvl 30 elites it's best to take in 5 lvl 30 characters). Monsters do not lose interest in bashing your head in just by you running far enough away like they do in the overwold, so take care.
As you get close to current max lvl (lvl 60) you run into raids. A raid is a party/group that has more than 5 people. You make a raid by making a party and then going to the raid tab and clicking "convert to raid". Note that you can only complete quests labeled (Raid) in raids, if the quest says something else you cannot complete it in raid 99% of the time. Some intances in the game are not balanced for solo or 5 man play, the monsters are just too tough. Blackrock Spire is an instance into which you can take 10 people. The place is a tower like structure (sort of.. it's inside a mountain) and when you zone in you can either go down or up. The lower side is called Lower Blackrock Spire and is actualy balanced for 5 people, but since you can still take 10 in it can be very easy compared to the other 5 man lvl 60 instances. If you go up that's Upper Blackrock Spire and that's balanced for 10 lvl 60s. The highest lvl monsters there are lvl 62.
So far, so good, none of these instances have "lockout timers". Meaning as soon as you get done killing all the monsters in, say UBRS, you can form another group and head back in. But there are other instances called Zul Gorub and Ruins of Ahn'Quirjac that are so tough that they are balanced for a raid of 20 lvl 60s (and that's how many you can take in there). These have a 3 day lockout timer, meaning if you zone in and kill all the bosses you have to wait 3 days before the bosses are back to alive and you can kill them again. But it also works as a "save file" because you can kill first 2 bosses today, then come back tomorrrow and do a few more bosses, and then come back the third day and kill the final boss. This is done via a raidid you get when you first kill a boss in that timer or zone into an instance with a group that has already killed a boss in that timer.
Then there is also dungeons called Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, Onyxia's Lair, and The Temple of Ahn'Quiraj (,and next patch Naxxramas) which are balanced for 40 lvl 60s and that's how many you can take in. These have a 1 week lockout.
Now combine the following facts:
- lockout so you cannot just continuosly go in and kill bosses and get loot off them
- each boss only drops 2 or 3 or so items and there is 20 or 40 people there
- when a new raid group first time encounters a boss none of them ever fought before it's usualy pretty hard until they figure out what the boss does and what they need to do to beat it so they usualy die a whole bunch of times until they figure it out, meaning the first time they zone in they are most likely not going to kill all the bosses, and may take them weeks/months to be able to kill everything in there.
It becomes apparent that you need some sort of system so that people who go get some reward even if they didn't get an item this particular lockout, and also to encourage people to go even if it means they won't necessarely kill a boss, and also to encourage people to go even if "they have everything they wanted from that particular encounter". This is called DKP (long explanation, eh?). Different guilds do it different ways, but usualy it's some numerical reward for participating that you may at some point exchange for items off a boss, or some variant thereof.
=============================================
In a trial version some features are blocked off. One of these features is using the General chat channel.
===============================================
When you kill a member (player member, not npc) of the opposite faction (horde vs aliance) that is within a certain range of lvls to you (green or higher character lvl when you click on them) you get an "honorable kill". Depending on your lvl, their lvl, your pvp rank, and their pvp rank you get a certain amount of "contribution points" awarded to you as well. You also get CP for winning in battlegrounds and completing some other objectives in battlegrounds too. At the end of a week all your CP are tallied up and compared with others of your faction for that week, and depending on how you did you rank up or down a bit on the pvp ranking system (and rank lets you buy certain rewards, the higher the rank the better the rewards).
CP trading is a cheating practice which means 2 teams get into a battleground and trade wins (i win, you win, i win, you win, etc...) or somethign along those lines so that they get a lot of CP for "free" when the tallying up comes up.

Warlocks at lvl 40 get a quest to get the Felsteed. All it is is just talk to a guy and they get it (and free as oposed to paying 90g or so for it like everyone else). It is 60% speed increase. Looks like a horse with flaming eyes and hooves, I guess it's sort of like the Nazgul horse. Warlocks at lvl 60 get a quest to get the Dreadsteed. It's actualy a quest chain and you end up using a bunch of items along the way, some of which can be bought on the Auction House (and prices vary from server to server, so the overall cost could be lower or higher than the cost for a "regular" 60 mount, though usualy much lower). 100% speed increase. Looks like a Felsteed that grew horns of fire all over it's body. Unlike a regular mount, these are considered spells, not items, and use a bit of mana to summon a Felsteed/Dreadsteed to ride.
Paladins at lvl 40 get a quest to get the Charger (dont' know real name). All it is is just talk to a guy and they get it (and free as oposed to paying 90g or so for it like everyone else). It is 60% speed increase. Looks like a horse with with a knight barding draped over it. Paladins at lvl 60 get a quest to get the Better Charger (don't know real name). It's actualy a quest chain and you end up using a bunch of items along the way, some of which can be bought on the Auction House (and prices vary from server to server, so the overall cost could be lower or higher than the cost for a "regular" 60 mount, though usualy much lower). 100% speed increase. Looks like a Charger with more intricate barding and a glowing yellowish aura. Unlike a regular mount, these are considered spells, not items, and use a bit of mana to summon a Charger/Better Charger to ride.

Crazy and random but here goes:
In Auberdine there is this spirit NPC called Yalda standing outside of a wrecked house. I have NEVER figured out why this NPC is there. She doesn't seem to offer any quests or anything, or perhaps I didn't do enough of the quests in Kalimdor to get one that involved me having to go to her. Basically, does this NPC play any other role other than to just stand there all day?

Being a dwarf at pre or at level 40 is there anyway to gain enough rep with stormwind to get a horse mount? I know the runecloth quest is repeatable but you can't start that until level 50 or that is what i understand from what i read.

if you go to the swamp of sorrows (lvl 35ish area east of darkshire thought the deadwind pass, horde town stonard) you can find these barrels in the swamp. you right click it that starts a quest to deliver the barrel to nethergarde keep in blasted lands (lvl 50ish area south of swamp of sorrows, aliance town nethergarde keep). upon delivery you get a bit of cash and some stormwind rep. you can only carry one at a time. do this several hundred/thousdand (not sure) times and you can do it before lvl 40. and if you are mountless it means you're doing it on foot....
ofcourse, back before they implemented the runecloth turnin it used to be the only way to get stormwind to exalted

The instance and mount explanations were great(I didn't realize the pally and warlock mounts cost mana to summon). I read the transportation guide here a while ago and it went over all of the mount stuff. Nothing really new in there about the mounts, but it does go over all the transportation methods. Felsteeds (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/images/mounts/bigfelsteed.jpg) are essentially just Nightmares (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightmare_%28Dungeons_%26_Dragons%29) as ridden by folks like Lord (http://csis.pace.edu/grendel/projs993a/arthurian/images/soth.jpg) Soth (http://kbgallery.homestead.com/files/lordsoth1.jpg). (Note that sometimes Soth does ride undead steeds, but it's not exactly unheard of for him to be on the back of a nightmare.)
The Nazgul horses don't even come close to what a Nightmare truly is.

The Charger is the name of the epic beastie. The lower level is the ubiquitous warhorse. Which in your PnP RPGs, the paladins get access to at level 10, iirc.

It's the stuff you might find while killing in a certain area, that you should be happy if you find it. Example: killing whelplings in the Swamp of Sorrows, you have a small chance of getting a summonable whelpling pet of some color. These rare pets sell for a high price to other players, so consider that before binding it to you or selling it to a vendor.

I've tried the same thing with my lvl 17 rogue and I couldn't figure out how. And I only had my lockpick skill at 81/85 so it's not because I'm maxed out.
The practice lock just turned gray when I rightclicked on it and no other effect. Oh, and using my picklock skill and then clicking on it didn't do anything either.
Calli
05-06-2006, 11:39 AM
Practice locks are only good up to a certain skill level, and not a very high one either. If the lock is grey before you try to pick it, don't bother, you won't get any skill gain from it. If it's green, you may get a skill gain. Once you can't get any more gains from practice locks, head over to Alther's Mill in Redridge and use the lockboxes there, or the sunken lockers under the Lake. After that head to Wetlands and skill up on the lockers near the Murloc camps.

Or let's say I ask the stupid question --- like that last one --- and I want to quickly check that it's been answered --- I have to read through all these until I find mine, then hope that the next response quoted my question or looks like the answer to it ---- right? These types of threads work best, least on this type of forum software, when started by a Mod, considering they can edit their own posts long after regular forum goers can, thus constantly updating the initial post and said post thus becoming a FAQ.

Alright I am still VERY new to this game and get little time to play and my fiance's answere to everything is "I dunno." So it's very likely that I will be in here often asking bizzare questions.
First question. I know that the stones you get from mining are used to make weights. What are the weights for and how exactly do you make them?
Second. What level does a Paladin have obtain to be able to ride a horse? Is there any other specifications you have to reach? Do you get to keep the horse or is it like the Griffins? (I seriously think I spelled that wrong)
Third. I know that Hordes can raid the Alliance but can the alliance raid the hordes as well? Do the Hordes receive warnings like the alliance do?
Ashoran
06-06-2006, 05:26 AM
1) The stones are used for more than weights. Blacksmiths make sharpening stones for sharp weapons and weights for blunt weapons. They both do the same thing however - they add a small amount of +damage to your weapon for a limited time. To make them you just have to choose Blacksmithing as one of your professions. Engineers can make use of the stones too, grinding them into blasting powder for use in their explosives.
2) All mounts are obtained at level 40. You keep the horse and summon it/dismiss it whenever you choose. Luckily for you, being a Paladin means you get your horse for free. Everyone else (except for Warlocks) has to pay.
3) Of course! I assume this means you have come to believe that the Horde are "bad guys" whilst Alliance are "good guys". Theyre both just different shades of grey. Alliance raid Horde cities all the time.

Thank you. I tried playing a horde on the Dethicus server with some of my old highschool friends but i have a hard time getting over their appearances. I'm a bit too girly to not be annoyed by it. But concidering I used to be way too girlie for my own good I think my fiance is doing a good job of influencing me to not be such a spazz about EVERY thing.
I have not really developed a personal oppinion on who is "Good" and who is "Bad" to me it's a game and i have a hard time grasping onto any "reality" on it. (some people get so into it that they really need to get a grip in my opinion but whatever gets their jolly's)
Anyways would you not feel that you are the "good" guy no matter what side you play?
Gormash
06-06-2006, 01:36 PM
Yes you would...
Most quests on the horde side have the theme "They're out to get us, help us defend/protect our society".
And just to make the transition to horde easier on you, Blizzard will be releasing an exansion within the year with two new races, and the new horde race will be pretty goodlooking. ^_^

Weird, it's just the opposite for me. Most sites that were blocked in the past I can now access. Might as well take advantage of that while I can.
Anyways, the best mobs to farm the EoW are Toxic Horrors in Felwood. However, everybody seems to know this and you will most likely find that area heavily farmed 24/7. If you can get Undeaths more easily, transmuting them would be the way to go.
The recipe looks to be a random world drop from any level 55+ mob.

Thanks... and yeah essence of undeath on my server is like 2g a piece TOPS... (I'm trying to gather for spell power enchant think I bought mine all for between 75s and 1g a piece)... meanwhile water is like 15-20g. It's all I'm really missing at this point.

An alchemy question:
How and where can I learn to create flasks? Are they world drops, or are there vendors selling them?
I'm a 300 alchemist...

Far as I know they all drop from mobs in the 'end game' dungeons. (Strat/scholo and up).
Don't have an alchemist, so might be slightly mistaken here.
