Isn't it impossible to play, having downloaded the client?
(Perhaps I missed the digital download)

Well, you've made an account on WorldOfWar.net :)
Despite being an excellent site, this is an unofficial WoW website. You need to create an account on the official site. If you're in the US, go here: http://signup.worldofwarcraft.com/ If you're in Europe go here: https://signup.wow-europe.com/
However, since you said you downloaded the client, I don't imagine you'll actually be able to create an account, as you'll need a valid CD key. You need to buy a boxed copy of the game and you'll get a CD key with that. Once you've created your account you should be good to go :)

Actually I had started with a downloaded client too. :) A friend gave me a guest pass, hence why I could play, and it gave me the full ten days to know whether I wanted to buy the boxed game for full access, or not.
Alright, that's not the point, I suppose...
As for "how to play WoW", that'd be wayyyy too vast an answer to give, if there's ever any answer to that. What I can advise is to check every "how to" guide stickied atop these forums + the official ones (you can read them even if not having an account yet). From there, decide what kind of character/profession you'd like to try the most, and also keep an eye on what other classes can and can't do: what happens if you break the mage's polymorph spell, that priests tend to draw aggro by healing in big blocks, etc. Summarizing everything here would be too long and too complex. That's what I did, so yes, we can survive the information overload :P
In fact, perhaps it'd be easier to help you if you already had a class/professions narrowed down. This way we could give more precise advice. :)

I think we need to get solinho signed up with an account and logged on before we start on the finer points of the game
