Patches?

OK, I should be getting WoW in a few days and it shall be my first MMORPG and basically my first computer game in years. What exactly is a Patch? Do I need them to play? Do I only need to download the latest one or all of them? How do I install them or whatever?

If there are anyother n00b questions which I have missed and oyu have the answers too, giving those also would be awesome!

A patch is just that, a patch. A patch to add stuff into the game, or fix problems and bugs. You need to download all the patches, in WoW's case, the blizzard downloader will download it for you, and then it'll install. So there should be no problems there.
