I'm levelling skinning to 300 and have been skinning mobs where the corpses have "skinnable" in orange. I was under the impression that this should give a skill point every time but I'm only get 1 point every 3-4 times I skin successfully. I ticketed a GM about it and got the usual 'working as intended' response. Anyone know if this is corrrect?

From what I recall I used the level*5 formula. Meaning, if a beast was level 40 I had to have 200 skinning *if not using enchanted items* to skin the beast. I tried to stay within 10 points of this and that seemed to be the quickest way for me. For example, if my skill was 200 I would try to find level 38-40 mobs to skin. However if memory serves you will get skill ups off of green mobs as well. I hit 300 skinning at level 41. I got to a point where I simply couldn't kill level 50 beasts that would for sure give me a skill up I skilled up through sheer numbers of beast skinned. I estimate I have skinned thousands of mobs to reach 300 at that level. I'm only lvl 45 now and managed to acquire my first rugged hide just a night or two ago.

Level x5 is correct and I'm skinning beasts that are within 2 levels of my maximum. I wonder if it's because this is the second time I've levelled skinning? Should that make a difference?

To tell you the truth, I've got 250 skinning at 39, and everybody within 5 levels of me is green. You SHOULD be getting one point per orange... honestly, though, I can hardly tell the difference between Orange and Green at a glance, so are you sure you're not mistaking the colors?

Absolutely 100% positive. I triple-checked before ticketing the GM.
I've had this happen to me too, on average every 2 ORANGE mobs skinned get me one point for some reason..no idea.

Likely because Skinning is so ridiculously easy to level.
I got from 0 to 300 in a couple hours.

Not so easy if you are in your 30's have a skill of 200+ and can't actually kill lvl40+ beasts that give an easy skillup.
But at lvl60 i think it would be comically easy.
Not like alchemy or enchanting, but pretty fast.

I posted this before. Leveling skinning is not like levelling other professions. Let's assume a variable called skin points. Say, you need 5 skin points to reach skinning lvl 250 from lvl 249. Each time you skin an orange, it's 3 points. A yellow 2 points and a green 1 point. Obviously you need to skin more greens than oranges to get a skill up.
The above figures are arbitary and are not representative to the actual skinning figures, but the point is that leveling skinning is an accumulative process and not an instant skill up like the rest of the professions.

Why on earth do they do that with skinning but not with the other professions? Take alchemy for example. Create a potion from a recipe that's orange and you get a skill point. EVERY time. Same with tailoring and, AFAIK, with every other profession. So why suddenly say, "I know, we'll completely change that system for skinning but not bother mentioning it to anyone".
Oh well, guess I'll just have to kill a shedload more beasts. Anyone know a good place to go after STV and Hinterlands?

Alchemy takes ingredients.
Mining takes exhaustable nodes. You get one skill point for mining -say- mithril. After that you have to wait for 15-30 minutes before it might respawn.
You can clean out a pack of -say- yetis and they nearly instantly respawn all of 'em. You can just keep going with skinning.

Because you can skin after every kill, you can only make a potion when you have gathered sufficient herbs. Skinning is alot easier to level than other professions.

No, that's wrong... skinning SHOULD be giving you one point per orange, and I know it does for me--in fact, I've noticed I have to do less things at green to get a skillup than I did at herbalism/alchemy, although that might just be my imagination.
Oh, and Herbalism/Alchemy is probably the easiest one to level... I was already 300 herbalism before I hit 40 on my priest. It sharder to do so with skinning, because the skinning level is proportional to the beast's level. Can't skin what you can't kill :(

Try levelling skinning from 290-300 and you will see.
If you are normally skinning while grinding, you will not notice it at higher levels of skinning. But try powerleveling skinning using a 60 character and you will see the difference.

Just seems strange that they decide to have a different skill-up system for one profession.

Yes. But there's -1- herb node in the entire area. You pick it, it's clean for as much as 24 hours or there abouts (Black Lotus).
Skinnable mobs will be plenty, and keep respawning.
The other nodes all get exhausted, forcing you to move on. Skinners can just keep going on in one single area without ever pausing for a break.

Hinterlands has things up through level 50 or so, making it high enough to get very close to 300 skinning, if not actually there...After that, go to UBRS.

I achieved 300 skinning before i ever skinned a mob over level 44. It took a LOT of skinning.

Usually you can achieve 300 skinning before you even hit 50 if you start from lvl 5, earlier if you are pure grinding than going after quests.
Go blasted lands for your skinning after hinterlands. After that, felwood and winterspring yetis. Winterspring yetis are mostly considered as the place for all your skinning needs.

Ah yes, Winterspring. I'd forgotten about that. It was where I got my last few points in skinning first time round. Should pick up a few Ek'o (or whatever they're called) in the process.
